Dear Parents,
In past weeks the global news has been particularly focused on extensive and graphic coverage of violence and natural disasters. The most recent example is the tragic news of the shooting in Las Vegas.
Large scale incidents and the intensive media coverage that often follows can be unsettling, and in some cases traumatic. Exposure to these types of situations and images can elicit questions, concerns and even misconceptions in children and young people.
We would like to take this opportunity to share some information regarding how parents can support their children during unsettling times. Experts agree that parents should:
-
Limit viewing of these events on TV or social media
-
Keep explanations developmentally appropriate (do not share unnecessary information)
-
Reassure children that they are safe
-
Make time to talk
The resource linked below may be useful to you as you talk to your children.
