 ‘Opened’

Justin Alexander
justina@isb.ac.th

Dear parents,
Thank you to all parents who joined us on Thursday night at the HS Open House to follow their son or daughter’s schedule and meet teachers. We enjoyed an excellent rate of attendance (best ever I hear) and our teachers appreciated the opportunity to share details with you of their courses and to explain how the year will unfold for your children at ISB.

I was wearing two hats last night (HS Principal and HS Parent) and I was energised by the enthusiasm of our teachers and excited about the courses that my daughter is taking this year. My wife and I commented to one another that we would love to be a student again and enjoy the opportunities that our children have been presented with here at ISB.

Parents of Senior students will be aware that earlier this week we sought feedback from students and parents regarding the timing of graduation for the class of 2018. We will be communicating a decision early next week about the exact date of graduation, so please stay tuned.

Regards,
Justin Alexander

HAL Grades
Susan Canobie
susanca@isb.ac.th

Please note that faculty will add HAL Grades for each subject on PowerSchool on Monday September 11. At ISB, students are assessed in two distinct areas: i) in relation to stated learning standards using an 1-7 grade descriptor and ii) in relation to their approach to learning using a 7-1 number grade. We call this second area the Habits and Attitudes to Learning or HAL grade. This grade gives students and parents an indication of dispositions of students as they develop the characteristics of growth and learning. Please keep in mind that in most classes, there will be only one or two completed assessments at this time of year. Also note, the HAL grade is not part of the academic achievement grade. You will find a copy of the HAL assessment criteria here. If you have any questions regarding this assessment, I encourage you to contact the teacher directly.

High School Counseling eNews

School Counselors

The school counselors have been meeting with new students over the past couple of weeks.  We have been reminded that they are still in the midst of transitioning.  This can be both an exciting and unsettling time for them as they are missing friends and all things familiar.  Not to be forgotten, it can also be a time of transition for the “stayers.”  These are students who have returned to ISB, but have had to say goodbye to good friends recently.  Please keep this in mind and check in with your child.  We will continue to monitor and support them through this transition.

College Counselors
In case Grade 12 parents missed this post last week, a copy of the Senior College Night presentation can be found here at this link. This week counselors walked Seniors through creating their Common App and UCAS accounts.

College visits to ISB are picking up with the week of September 18 being a very popular time for colleges to meet with ISB students. Please encourage students to attend these visits as it’s an expectation that students meet with a representative if applying to their institution. A reminder that a large worldwide College Fair will be held on Saturday, September 23, 3:45pm at the Shangri-La Hotel. Students must register in advance at: cois.org/bangkokfair2017. A list of universities in attendance can also be found at the link. Parents are invited to subscribe to the Google Calendar of visits at: https://sites.google.com/a/isb.ac.th/isb-hs-university-advising/university-visit-calendar
