High School Open House
Justin Alexander

Dear Parents,

I look forward to seeing you at the annual HS Open house on Thursday 7th September.  Parents will have the opportunity to learn more about the courses that their son/s and/or daughter/s are taking this year and to meet the teachers that make the learning happen! Learning at ISB is a partnership with all concerned – students, parents and teachers and as such we want to invite you into school to see how the learning will take place.

Please arrive prior to 6.30pm and make your way to the front of the Chevron Theater where you will be able to collect an individualized schedule for each of your children. This schedule will guide you through the evening with details on class periods, teachers and locations. We will then commence our evening at 6:30pm with introductions and some helpful information for parents in the Chevron Theater. From 6.50 – 8.40pm parents will then follow the eight period HS schedule to meet their teachers and to learn about the exciting courses on offer. Please be reminded that the Open House is not a parent teacher conference, so if you have specific questions about your child’s progress etc, please contact the teacher to make arrangements to meet/talk at another time.

Notes from HS PTA meeting
Justin Alexander
Justina@isb.ac.th

Thank you to all HS parents (old and new) that attended our first HS PTA meeting on Thursday August 24th. The HS admin team and I appreciated the opportunity to speak and present to more than 60 HS parents on a variety of topics that included an update on new facilities, the new HS counseling model, the introduction of the 1-7 grading system, news from Arts and Athletics and the updated HS Schedule.

We answered questions about lunch lines and congestion, what to do if your child has a ‘free’ period in the morning or at the end of the day and other general HS matters. Additionally, a number of parents of our Seniors (12th graders) requested that we look at the possibility of moving the graduation date forward instead of this taking place on the last day of the school year. This was already discussed last school year and the HS administration team will be looking into this closely in the next week or so.

School Counselors

It’s been a great first couple of weeks. We’ve seen students taking on more
responsibility both in formal leadership roles, but also in being welcoming to new students.
They have also been positive and resilient in adjusting to the changes in the daily schedule and club fair.  We hope that as the year progresses and students begin to juggle school and activities, they can continue to find balance between classes and extracurriculars. While students are growing more in their ability to organize
and manage themselves, it’s important to remember that they still need your parental support, wisdom, and care.

Be sure and talk to your son or daughter and make sure that:
a) they have a good idea of the expectations of their teachers

  1. b) they have a plan to be organized in managing their time and keeping their assignments organized
  2. c) they know how to relax a little and refresh their batteries after a long school day and week.  Encourage your son or daughter to come by the counseling area and say hi to us!  We’ll be checking in with them soon as well. For the Grade 9 students, we hope that you find your student establishing some routines. One very simple routine we advise students is to complete homework on the night it is assigned. This way if they need to visit the teacher for further assistance or edit/review their work they can do so the next day.Students also continued to be introduced to clubs and activities this week and we had a visit from Mrs. Hansberry (Activities Coordinator) in Freshman Seminar. She explained different types of service opportunities at ISB and service hour requirements for graduation (10 per year). We’re looking forward to getting to know all the 9th graders!

College Counselors

Seniors – Seniors met this will with their college counselor in the first college seminar of the year. They should now be scheduling individual meetings with their college counselor to discuss post-secondary plans. Juniors – Juniors will meet this coming Monday with their college counselor in their first G11 college seminar of the year.

College Visits to ISB and Bangkok – MANY representatives have started scheduling visits to ISB. Parents are invited to subscribe to the Google Calendar of visits at: https://sites.google.com/a/isb.ac.th/isb-hs-university-advising/university-visit-calendar
