Join the ISB Careers Day, September 7th

By: Anthony Giles, Arts and Activities Director
anthonyg@isb.ac.th

The ISB Pathways Program seeks to better connect our students with alumni and friends of ISB, who are making a difference through their work in the real world. Through Pathways, we are hoping to develop a bank of contact information for individuals with a variety of career experiences for our students to be able to reach out to, collaborate with and learn from. ISB has offered successful career internship programs for years and career resources through our counselling department but Pathways provides a chance for us to expand our efforts and better utilize our extensive network of alumni, parents and partner businesses to better serve our students.

As the first initiative of this program, ISB is hosting a Pathways Career Day and we are asking current professionals or businesses in Thailand to host a table on September 7, 2017. We will have two sessions on the day, one for students and one during our Parent Open House for students and parents. It is a chance to promote your company and your programs but also to share your experiences and expertise with students who are currently navigating their choices of study and career.

Please register your interest in supporting this initiative here.

Thank you for your consideration of this.

Panther Rugby Academy Starts Next Week!

By: Bob Connor, Assistant Athletics Director
bobc@isb.ac.th

Rugby is a game that has a place for students of all shapes and sizes where success is only achieved through collective team effort. With this basic principal of team spirit at its core, the Panther Rugby Academy program is designed to develop the basic fundamental rugby skills of catching, passing, tackling and running. In addition, students will be coached on basic set-piece play with an emphasis on sevens rugby. Regarding opportunities for competition, we will look to arrange seven-a-side games against other schools/clubs to enable students to test their newly acquired skills.

There will be three age groups in the first “season” – U9/U11 combined, U13, and U19. Please go to this link for all information regarding days/times and fees. We look forward to having you join our Rugby program!

Campus Safety UPDATES

By: Mark Hevland, Head of Risk Management
markh@isb.ac.th

Dear ISB Community,

Welcome to the beginning of a new year here at ISB.  As we continue to keep student safety at the forefront of everything we do, some campus access changes have been made.

Please take the time to read all of the following information in its entirety.  Changes related to Bicycles, Early Childhood gate, Parking Passes, and Student Access times are included.

Bicycles:

We encourage students, staff and parents to commute to school by bicycle where possible.  Along with this we also want to make sure riders are doing this in the safest way.

It is very important that bike riders use the designated bike lanes and be careful at all intersections and driveways.  When approaching other bikers or walkers, be courteous and provide a safe distance when passing, and say something to make them aware you are there.

ALL bicycle riders must correctly wear, and fasten, a helmet when wishing to access campus.  Helmets must be worn at all times when riding, walking or pushing a bike to/from the designated parking racks on campus.

Beginning Monday, August 28th, those not wearing a fastened helmet will not be allowed to access campus.

Please remember to park bicycles only in designated bike shelters.  Bikes MAY NOT be parked along the front of the school, at any time.  This includes the weekends.

Early Childhood Entrance:

Starting Thursday August 17th, we will be opening an Early Childhood entrance gate.  It is located at the far end of the elementary school next to the playground and ES bike parking.  This gate will be opened daily, 7:00am – 7:45am, 1:00pm – 1:20pm, & 2:00pm – 2:40pm.  (Early dismissal days 12:50pm – 1:15pm) Only ISB ID card holders may access campus through this gate.  All visitors without an ISB ID must still enter through the main entrance near the panther.

Parking passes:
Remember that the yellow 2015-17 parking stickers expire August 31st.  New sticker applications are available at the main office security desk and the security office.  Please apply for renewals soon.

Campus Access:

  • The campus will be open to the community from 6.40am to 8.00pm each day.
  • Students and community members may enter the school via:
    • the front main gate (from 6.40am to 8.00pm each day)
    • the back Sarawanville pedestrian gate (from 6.40am to 8.00pm each day)
    • the Sports Complex Gate (weekdays from 6:40am to 8:00am and 1:55pm to 6:45pm)
    • the ES bike shed gate (weekdays from 6:40am to 8:00am and 12:30pm to 5:00pm)
    • the HS bike shed gate (weekdays from 6:40am to 7:45am and 1:45pm to 3:30pm)
  • After 8:00pm students and adults may continue to cross the campus to get to and from Nichada and Sarawanville.
  • Visitors (non ISB community members) may only use the front main gate – not the Sarawanville pedestrian gate.
  • Adults must present a valid ID to enter campus at all times.
  • Middle and High school students must present their ID cards (campus cards) when entering campus after regular school hours.
  • Access times will be adjusted for events that run before and after normal opening hours. For example, events that run past 8:00pm, the campus closing time will be adjusted to 30 minutes after the scheduled end of the event (e.g. Spirit Night).
  • All buildings on campus will be secured at 6:00pm (or immediately after the event concludes) and access will only be granted to those personnel assigned to the space. Buildings will be opened at 5:00am on school days for ISB staff access. No student or parent will be allowed to access classrooms, offices, or other learning spaces without the assigned staff member present.

Campus Use Regulations for Students by Division

  • Regular school supervision hours are as follows:
    • For ES 7:00am to 2:20pm on Weekdays, and 7:00am to 1:10pm on Early Release Days.
    • For MS 7:20am to 2:25pm
    • For HS 7:20am to 2:25pm
  • Any Elementary school student on campus outside of regular school hours, who are not participating in a school sponsored event (taking part or supporting), must be actively supervised by an adult in charge, appointed by the family.
  • Middle and High School students may use the following designated areas (if available) outside of regular school hours
    • MS/HS Library (until 4:30pm Monday-Thursday, 3:30pm Friday.  Closed Weekends)
    • Track, Field A & D, central tennis courts, and Cafeteria (until 6:00pm)
    • Auxiliary Gym (until 7:45pm)
    • Students may only use other areas of the school for school approved activities with adult supervision, eg. weight room, CC building practice rooms, etc.

Emergency Contact

  • Parents should be aware that no adult supervision is provided outside of regular school hours and school sponsored activities.  Access to the campus is at own risk.
  • Point of emergency contact – security guards are stationed at the;
    • main gate, front of school,
    • sports complex,
    • athletics area breezeway,
    • back gate by Sarawanville.

Except during school holidays, a school nurse is on campus until 8pm on weekdays and at certain weekend hours when events are scheduled.

Medical Emergencies at School and in the Community

By:  Sally Plomley ISB School Health Coordinator
nurse@isb.ac.th

Medical Emergencies occur when we least expect it. We all need to know how we can get help in the case of an emergency. At ISB we continually get new members of our community who have come from overseas and do not know what to do in the event of an emergency.

Please put the numbers below into your mobile phone so you have them should you ever need them.

School:

At school we have our School Health Nurse working Monday to Friday 7am-8pm and Saturday 8am-3pm (or later depending on sport schedule). In the case of a medical emergency or accident call 1111 from an internal phone or 081 944 8255 from a mobile phone. The nurse has been trained to assess the situation and call for help as required. We do have a school ambulance to transfer patients to hospital if required.

If there is no nurse on duty we recommend you call World Medical Centre on 02 836 9977 for an ambulance. You should also call security on 7705 from internal phone or 081 806 6740 from mobile phone to notify them of the situation so they can direct the ambulance.

Nichada Thani:

At times the school may be able to help with medical emergencies in the Nichada community. This may not be possible when there is only 1 nurse on duty or if the nurses are dealing with emergencies in the school. You can try calling the nurse on the above number but she may tell you to call for help elsewhere. Ambulances can be arranged through the following local hospitals:

World Medical Centre (Ambulance)               02 836 9977

Mongkut Wattana General Hospital               02 574 1000

Nonthavej Hospital                                          02 596 7888

The Bumrungrad Nichada Clinic does NOT offer an emergency service. There is no ambulance available from there and the doctor will not attend emergencies in the community. They do not have any imaging on site and can only treat minor injuries. The number for the clinic is 02 960 4216 and they are open Monday to Saturday 8am-6pm. They are closed on Sundays and public holidays.

Downtown:

If you live downtown or are visiting the downtown area it is worth knowing where the nearest hospital is to call for help. Some hospitals in the downtown area are:

Bangkok Hospital                                        02 310 3000    (New Petchaburi Rd)

Bumrungrad Hospital (Ambulance)         02 667 1188    (Sukhumvit 3)

Phayathai 1 Hospital                                  02 640 1111    (Victory Monument)

Phayathai 2 Hospital                                  02 617 2400    (Victory Monument)

Samitivej Hospital (Ambulance)               02 711 8389    (Sukhumvit 49)

In Bangkok you can also call 191 (general emergencies and ask for ambulance) or 1669 (for an ambulance). The ambulance will transfer you to a local hospital and there may be little to no english spoken by the staff.

When there is a medical emergency please remain calm. Assign one person to call for help and speak slowly to the nurse/operator to get help. Tell them the nature of the injury and the location of the victim. If you are an english speaker remember that you will be talking to someone who is not a native english speaker and speaking to them quickly or in a panic may cause confusion. One of the most important things is to keep yourself and the patient calm. Getting panicked will only cause a rise in blood pressure in the patient and potentially make the injury/illness worse.

Allow time for the help to arrive. Do not call every 1-2 minutes to see why help has not arrived….it will just slow down the process and people will be answering the phone not getting to you.

Living in Bangkok it can be hard to access medical care quickly. It may be worth doing basic first aid training and keeping a first aid kit in your car so you can help stabilize the patients whilst waiting for help to arrive. A CPR and First Aid course for children is offered by Samitivej Hospital (link). There is First Aid Bangkok also provide general CPR and First Aid training in Bangkok (link).

ISB is committed to your child’s overall development, both educationally and health related. Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact your healthcare provider or the ISB Health Clinic (nurse@isb.ac.th).
