Final Reminder:  Colgate Kids Triathlon 2017 – May 10

By: Bob Connor, Assistant Athletics Director
bobc@isb.ac.th

 The Main Events

  1. Try-a-Tri:(designed for 8 years old & under) / Swim – Bike – Run

Students will start with a 50-meter swim (25-meter pool), followed by an 800m bike ride in the ISB parking lot and a 500m run around the track. Participants will not be timed, and all will receive a participation medal.

  1. Triathlon:(designed for 8 or 9 and older) / Swim – Bike – Run

A 200 meter swim (50-meter pool), 5 km bike ride and 1 km run will allow all students a nice, healthy challenge.  Everyone will start and race together but with the help of “chip timing” results, ribbons will be awarded for First-Second-Third place finishers in three divisions:  U11, U14, & U19 (Girls & Boys). Participation medals will also be awarded.

On The Side

  1. Do the Double:Designed specifically for established athletes who have been exercising bregularly for a long period of time, this event doubles each of the regular triathlon distances, 400m Swim (50-meter pool), 10 km Bike, 2 km Run.  If you’ve been swimming, biking and running regularly, feel free to take on the challenge.  Everyone will start and race together but with the help of “chip timing” results, ribbons will be awarded for First-Second-Third place finishers in three divisions: U11, U14, & U19 (Girls & Boys). Participation medals will also be awarded.
  2. Duathlon:(Any age group/division may enter) / Run – Bike – Run

Want the challenge without the swim? Then consider a new Run-Bike-Run event! Athletes will run 1 km, then bike 5 km, then run the same run distance, 1 km a second time. Ribbons will be awarded for First-Second-Third place finishers in three divisions: U11, U14, & U19 (Girls & Boys). Participation medals will also be awarded.

*** NOTE:  There will not be any relays this year.

Last Minute Blood Drive to the Thai Red Cross This Saturday, April 29

By:  Martin Herrmann, Grade 6 Science, Health
martinh@isb.ac.th

A couple of teachers would like to invite you to join us this Saturday to donate blood at the Thai Red Cross (behind the Snake Farm across from Lumphini Park).  FYI, Rh negative blood groups are extremely rare here, in high demand, and much more common among expats.

We could taxi down together from Nichada around 7:30 or meet at the Thai Red Cross around 8 to avoid any lines and traffic.

Please contact Martin Herrmann (martinh@isb.ac.th) for eligibility requirements, further information and to RSVP to be there as a group.

Hope you can join us!

Do you have band instruments that you would like to sell?

By: Kentaro Udagawa, MS Band
kentarou@isb.ac.th

Dear ISB Bands families,

Next year’s grade 6 band students will soon be hoping to purchase instruments for next year. Some will be looking for second-hand instruments to purchase.

If you have band instruments in good condition that you wish to sell (flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, alto/tenor/baritone saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, euphonium/baritone, tuba and/or percussion kit), please contact <kentarou@isb.ac.th> and bring your instruments to the MS band rooms (#119 or 107, first floor in the Cultural Center) before Thursday, May 4 for us to evaluate and give an estimated price. We will then send a list of available instruments to parents who are interested in purchasing second-hand instruments.

Please be advised that we are not able to guarantee that all instruments will be sold due to the condition or interested buyers.

If you have further questions, please feel free to write to <kentarou@isb.ac.th>.

Health Clinic: Required Annual Medical Screening For Students

By: Sally Plomley, Nurse Office
nurse@isb.ac.th or sallyp@isb.ac.th

It is the time of year when we need to start the medical screening process for ALL returning students. Completed screening forms will need to be sent to the Health Clinic by June 30th 2017. This is a requirement for all students returning in the 2017-2018 school year. Please read the information below to learn more about the process.

We have modified the screening process so there is a basic medical screen for most students with a more extensive screen for students entering Grades 3, 6, 9 and 11, which includes a tuberculosis screen. Any student who has had a new student medical examination after January 2017 will not need a repeat examination. All students must fill in the Nurse Medication Consent form and tuberculosis symptom screening form.

Forms are available for download from the ISB website. ISB Health Services Forms and Resources

Any student with Diabetes, Asthma or Anaphylaxis will also need an action plan filled out by the doctor. Theses Action Plans are available for download from the ISB website. ISB Health Services Forms and Resources

ALL FORMS MUST BE SUBMITTED TO THE HEALTH CLINIC BY JUNE 30 2017 either in person or via email nurse@isb.ac.th

Grade Medical review

The medicals can be done by any registered medical practitioner either in Thailand or your home country. Many health insurance companies will cover annual medical screening for children.

The medicals examinations for students entering K and grades 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10 and 12 can now be done at the Bumrungrad Nichada Clinic (with referral to the hospital if there are any issues). They will also have an ECG machine at the Bumrungrad Nichada Clinic from May 8-20 so students entering grade 11 may have their medical done there between those dates. They can also be done at World Medical Center or Samitivej Hospital. All students entering grades 3, 6, 9 and 11 (if medical not done at Bumrungrad Nichada Clinic May 8-20) will need to attend Bumrungrad Hospital, World Medical Center, Samitivej Hospital or any other hospital/doctors surgery with appropriate facilities. Please note that World Medical Center only have audiology services Tuesday 9am-5pm, Wednesday 5pm-8pm and Saturday 9am-5pm.

Packages have been negotiated for Bumrungrad and World Medical Center as outlined below. Please make your child’s booking for the “ISB Student Physical Examination” and take the forms for the doctor to fill out (as required). Please note there may be an additional payment required for equipment and if there are additional medical reviews or tests are required due to abnormalities found during the examination.

Changes to the ISB Calendars for 2016/17 and 2017/18

By: Dr. Andrew Davies, Head of School
andrewd@isb.ac.th

Recently the Royal Thai Government announced some changes to the public holidays calendar for 2017 and 2018 and this has necessitated some changes to the ISB Calendars.

Please find linked here a copy of the revised ISB Calendar for 2017/18, approved by the Board of Trustees earlier this week on 18th April 2017.

For 2016/17

  • It was announced that Friday 5 May 2016 will no longer be observed as an official holiday. However, ISB will continue to have a holiday on this date as many will already have made plans.
  • It was also announced that on 28 July HM King Rama X ‘ s birthday will be observed as an official holiday. This means that the ISB Summer School Session 2 will be reduced by one day.

 For 2017/18

  • 13 October will be observed as an official holiday as the memorial day for HM King Rama IX.
  • ISB will schedule a holiday for 13 October 2017, cancel the planned holiday for 22 September and move the Professional Day from 21 September to 22 September.
  • ISB will cancel the planned holiday for 7 May 2018 (Coronation Day Substitute) and move this holiday to 13th April (official Songkran Holiday). This means that the Songkran Holiday will be one day longer than is typical (beginning on a Friday), enabling ISB community members to avoid traffic and to participate more fully in the Songkran celebrations.
  •  December 5th will remain an official holiday and be renamed as “Father’s Day”.

It is possible that there will be further changes relating to the dates for the Cremation of HM the King Rama IV and the Coronation of HM the King Rama X.

We understand these changes may cause some inconvenience and we have tried to arrive at solutions that have the least impact on student learning and our community. The number of learning and contractual days remains the same.

Sincerely,

Dr. Andrew Davies
Head of School
