What is a School Board Trustee? – Tuesday, April 4th, 6.30pm

By: Elizabeth Bredin, ISB BOT Vice-Chair and Chair of the Committee on Trustees
esbredin@gmail.com

Are you unsure as to what the ISB Board of Trustees actually does? Perhaps you don’t know what the division of responsibility is between the Board and the School Administration? Or how the Board differs from the PTA? Are you undecided whether or not to run in the ISB Board election? We can help to answer these questions.

Potential candidates, and all interested members of the community, are welcome to attend an informative and practical session–What is a Trustee?”—which will be held on the evening of Tuesday, April 4, at 6:30 pm in the MPB3. This is also an opportunity to learn about the roles, responsibilities and work of the Board of Trustees (BOT), in general. We warmly encourage all members of our community to join us.

For candidates, please be reminded that the deadline for submission of BOT Nomination Forms is Friday, April 7, 2017 at 12 noon. Forms must be submitted in 2 formats: 1) by email to Board secretary, Joy Davy at joy.davy@yahoo.com (with your name as subject line) and 2) in hard copy with Khun Oor, at the Head of School office.

For more information, please contact Elizabeth Bredin, Vice Chair of the ISB BOT and Chair of the Committee on Trustees at esbredin@gmail.com

Board of Trustees Annual Election 2017 – Apply or Nominate another

By: Elizabeth Bredin, ISB BOT Vice-Chair and Chair of the Committee on Trustees
esbredin@gmail.com

We need you. Join us!
Board nominations close on Friday, April 7.

The ISB Board of Trustees (BOT) would like to announce its annual election, which will take place on Tuesday, May 16, 2017, the day of the International School Association (ISA) Annual General Meeting. (The ISA is comprised of all ISB parents and guardians and is the license holder of ISB.) Election results will be announced that evening at the 7:00pm AGM. Board nominations opened on Friday, March 17 and close on Friday, April 7.

The ISB BOT is currently composed of eleven elected positions and up to four appointed positions. This year there will be eight open seats on the Board to be filled by election. Newly elected trustees will serve a two-year term, beginning August 1, 2017.

Candidates for the BOT should be aware of the many rewards and responsibilities of serving on the Board. The Board is the guardian of the school’s mission, and as such sets policy, focuses on school governance and addresses long-term, strategic issues. The Board is not involved in day-to-day school management. The full Board meets once a month in an open regular session, followed by a closed executive session. Board meetings occur in the evenings at ISB and last approximately two-three hours. In addition, trustees attend an annual retreat in August.

Trustees also serve on one or more committees corresponding to their skills and interests. Current committees are the Business Committee, the Committee on Trustees, and the Strategic Improvement and Learning Committee. Committees meet once a month for one-two hours and are the working groups of the Board. Subjects such as financial stability, budget oversight, stewardship of ISB’s educational program, evaluation and training of the Board, and future strategic improvements in alignment with the mission of ISB, are examples of issues addressed by the committees.

Trustees are charged with the responsibility to represent ISB and the ISA as a whole, rather than any one constituency within the community. No specific professional or personal background is needed, other than ISA membership, a positive attitude, the ability to commit to the time requirements, and a deep interest to maintain and further enhance the excellence of ISB. The rewards of Board service include the opportunity to interact with our dynamic school leadership team, and the opportunity to understand and help shape ISB’s future growth and direction.

Please note these important election dates and activities:

  • Friday, March 17, 2017, 12 noon  – Nominations open – Nomination forms will be available at the Head of School’s office or available for download here: https://powerschool.isb.ac.th/downloads/BOT_Nomination_Form_2017.docx

  • Tuesday, April 4, 2017, 6:30 pm, MPB3  –  “What is a Trustee?”  This is an information session on what it means to be a Trustee. All interested parties and community members are welcome.

  • Friday, April 7, 2017, 12 noon – Nominations close – Nomination forms must be submitted in both electronic and hard copy by this deadline. Electronic copies must be sent to BOT secretary joy.davy@yahoo.com (with your name as the subject) and hard copies must be filed with Khun Oor in the Head of School’s office.

  • Wednesday, May 3, 2017, 6:30 pm, MS Skybox – “Meet the Candidates Night” This is an opportunity for ISA members to meet the candidates, ask questions and hear what they have to say regarding their candidacies.

  • Tuesday, May 16, 2017 – Election, 7:00 am – 6:00 pm & AGM, 7:00 pm

Please contact Elizabeth Bredin – ISB BOT, Vice-Chair and Chair, Committee on Trustees – with questions regarding service to the Board: 095-475-2364 or esbredin@gmail.com.

By: Mark Hevland, Head of Risk Management
markh@isb.ac.th

As we approach the Songkran holiday break, we wanted to give an update to on campus access and the changes that will be in place during the holidays.

Beginning Monday April 10th, through Sunday April 16th, campus staff will be limited to just the necessary security personnel needed to oversee the campus.

We understand that some families stay in town and would like to access the campus.  During this time, families are still welcome to use the field areas, however ALL students must be accompanied by an adult.

There will be limited resources available and all of the academic areas and restrooms will be secured.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

Enjoy your much deserved holiday.

Colgate Kids Triathlon 2017 – May 10th

By: Bob Connor, Assistant Athletics Director
bobc@isb.ac.th

Wednesday, May 10  (Visaka Bucha – School Holiday)

NEW RACES & FORMAT THIS YEAR!

We are looking forward to two great races at the heart of our day along with two side events for those interested. This year, the races are as follows:

The Main Events

  1. Try-a-Tri: (designed for 8 years old & under) / Swim – Bike – Run

Students will start with a 50-meter swim (25-meter pool), followed by an 800m bike ride in the ISB parking lot and a 500m run around the track. Participants will not be timed, and all will receive a participation medal.

  1. Triathlon: (designed for 8 or 9 and older) / Swim – Bike – Run

A 200 meter swim (50-meter pool), 5 km bike ride and 1 km run will allow all students a nice, healthy challenge.  Everyone will start and race together but with the help of “chip timing” results, ribbons will be awarded for First-Second-Third place finishers in three divisions:  U11, U14, & U19 (Girls & Boys). Participation medals will also be awarded.

On The Side

  1. “Do the Double”: Designed specifically for established athletes who have been exercising regularly for a long period of time, this event doubles each of the regular triathlon distances, 400m Swim (50-meter pool), 10 km Bike, 2 km Run.  If you’ve been swimming, biking and running regularly, feel free to take on the challenge.  Everyone will start and race together but with the help of “chip timing” results, ribbons will be awarded for First-Second-Third place finishers in three divisions: U11, U14, & U19 (Girls & Boys). Participation medals will also be awarded.
  1. Duathlon: (Any age group/division may enter) / Run – Bike – Run

Want the challenge without the swim? Then consider a new Run-Bike-Run event! Athletes will run 1 km, then bike 5 km, then run the same run distance, 1 km a second time. Ribbons will be awarded for First-Second-Third place finishers in three divisions: U11, U14, & U19 (Girls & Boys). Participation medals will also be awarded.

*** NOTE:  There will not be any relays this year.
