The Intensive Learning Needs program at ISB is unlike any other program in Bangkok. It offers children with diagnosed developmental or intellectual disability (e.g. Global Developmental Delay, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down’s Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy) the opportunity to learn with a highly trained special education teacher within the international school setting of ISB. They will receive a highly individualized curriculum focusing on functional academics and life skills and are also integrated with typically developing peers to the maximum extent appropriate.
The first class will begin in August 2017 and we are pleased to share our new space and more information about the program with our ISB community and with the media and special guests.
We hope you will join us to launch this exciting and worthwhile new program.

Parent Volunteers needed to judge Tournament of Minds
By: Dr Selena Gallagher, PK-12 Challenge and Enrichment Specialist
selenag@isb.ac.th.
On Sunday February 26th, ISB will be hosting the Bangkok Tournament of Minds and we need some willing volunteers to get involved and help out on the day as judges. This is a fantastic enrichment opportunity for our students as well as many others in the region, but we couldn’t make it happen without the gift of time from many volunteers. No experience is necessary and all the details of the event are below. If you are interested in helping out, or if you have any questions, please contact Selena Gallagher at selenag@isb.ac.th.
When? Sunday February 26th 2017
What? A team creative problem-solving competition. Teams of up to 7 students from either elementary or secondary schools compete in one of three divisions – Language Literature, Social Sciences or Math Engineering. They work for six weeks to solve a long-term challenge and present their solution on Tournament Day in front of an audience and a panel of judges. On the day, teams also face an unseen Spontaneous Challenge.
Who? Approximately 400 students from schools across Thailand and the S.E. Asian region.
Why? The aim of TOM is to enhance the potential of our youth by developing diverse skills, enterprise, time management and the discipline to work collaboratively within a competitive environment. Tournament of Minds’ objectives are: to provide the stimulation of real, open-ended challenges; to develop creative problem-solving approaches and techniques; to foster cooperative learning and team work; to promote knowledge and appreciation of self and others; to encourage experimentation and risk-taking; to expand and reward creative and divergent thinking; to stimulate a spirit of inquiry and love of learning; to develop enterprise; and to celebrate excellence.
What’s involved? As a judge, you would be part of a panel of three to judge one of the long-term challenges or the spontaneous challenge, according to specific criteria. There will be a recommended training session in the weeks leading up to the Tournament to familiarise you with the challenge and the judging criteria, then you will be required to come along on 26th February for the Tournament itself. The schedule is still to be determined but likely commitment is around four to five hours, depending on assignment.
What’s in it for me? Supporting a worthwhile enrichment opportunity that wouldn’t happen without people like you.
The joy of seeing students demonstrating their ingenuity, creativity and cooperation.
And free food!

Don’t Judge Me, Help Judge Forensics!
By: Anthony Giles, PK-12 Arts & Activities Director
anthonyg@isb.ac.th
ISB is excited to host IASAS Forensics and Debate Cultural Convention here on March 2-4, 2017. This is a huge event with 90 visiting students and 35 coaches from five IASAS schools. Eighteen ISB delegates will compete supported by seven faculty coaches and site managers. 65 ISB students will work the event as timers, runners and providing media coverage for the wider IASAS community. This is our first time hosting FAD in over ten years and we’re eager to make the event a success – and that’s where you come in.
Please see up here. WE NEED YOUR HELP! The event requires close to 60 adjudicators involved with judging one of four events:
- Oral Interpretation: Participants choose poetry or prose and perform a dramatic reading.
- Original Oratory: Participants perform an original 5-7 minute speech on a topic of their choice.
- Impromptu Speaking: Participants deliver a 3-5 minute speech, given only 1 minute to prepare.
- Extemporaneous Speaking: Participants create and deliver a speech on a chosen current event topic.
Absolutely no experience is required! A short training session will be provided and all support material is readily available online. Judging slots will be organised to best suit your schedule. The total time commitment is 2-4 hours. Did I mention that WE NEED YOUR HELP!?
If you are able to judge an event, please fill out the form. Thank you in advance for your support! Your assistance is greatly appreciated, both by ISB and our visiting IASAS schools. Hosting events like this would not be possible without your support.

Anthony and Lisa

Calling All Host Families – IASAS FAD CC March 1-5, 2017
By: Anthony Giles, PK-12 Arts & Activities Director
anthonyg@isb.ac.th
Dear Students and Parents,
As many of you know, we will be hosting the 2017 IASAS Forensics and Debate Cultural Convention here at ISB on March 1-5, 2017. This is a huge event that requires the housing of nearly 100 visiting students from the other five IASAS schools. As with all IASAS events FAD CC provides an exceptional opportunity to highlight our own students but also to showcase our world-renowned ISB hospitality. WE NEED YOUR HELP!
IASAS events depend upon the goodwill and generosity of our ISB families to host the visiting delegates. This reciprocal hosting exchange adds immense value to our programs, and it provides a unique opportunity to develop new friendships and strengthen our connections across international communities.
Please note following guidelines for IASAS hosting:
- Host families are responsible for providing a safe environment for visiting students and for acting in compliance with the ISB Hosting Policy.
- Students must be hosted in pairs, or more, with no exceptions. Accommodation can be fairly basic and rooms shared.
- Host parents/guardians will not offer housing unless one of the parents/guardians is present for the duration of the cultural convention. Supervision is required at home during the evenings.
- All visiting FAD teams will arrive Wednesday, March 1, 2017 and depart Sunday, March 5, 2017
- Families are expected to provide healthy breakfasts and dinners while hosting visiting students.
- All IASAS host and guest students will be required follow all the rules and guidelines set forth by the league and host school (link).
- Parents will receive a curfew call from visiting coaches at 9pm every evening to check in with their students.
Thank you in advance for your generosity. Hosting events like this would not be possible without your support. Please click on the link here to register to host: FAD Housing

Anthony Giles

Register your child for the 2017 North Bangkok Basketball Association (NBBL) season
By: Kevin Sypolt
ksypolt@gmail.com
Registration is open to all boys and girls in grades PK-12. The fee is THB 3,600 for all players. Players do NOT need to be ISB students but all games and practices take place at ISB.
League assessments will be held on Sunday, February 26th between 12:00pm and 4:00pm at ISB gyms. An exact schedule will be sent out to all registered players and their parents.
Team practices will begin the week starting March 6th. League play will take place on Saturdays and begin on March 11th. Games will continue every Saturday (except for Songkran break) and conclude the weekend of May 19th/20th with league championships.
We will use Top Flight Academy to hold weekly clinics for all ages. The clinics will either be on Tuesday or Thursday depending upon how many players register, Some coaches may also choose to hold a weekly team practice.
We will need many parents to help out as coaches in order for the league to function. Parents only need to coach the teams at Saturday games since we have Top Flight running weekday practices. But if we don’t have enough parent volunteers for a league we will not be able to offer basketball for that particular age group. So we strongly encourage all parents to sign up to help coach.
Payment for the NBBL season can be made at new Community Activity Office (CAO) which is located next to the bookstore at ISB. The CAO is open from 7:00 to 11:00AM and 12:00 to 3:30PM Monday – Friday.
Please go to the NBBL website at https://www.isb.ac.th/
If you have any questions, please contact Kevin Sypolt at ksypolt@gmail.com
