Revision of Campus Access Guidelines

By: Dr. Andrew Davies
andrewd@isb.ac.th

Following some concerns expressed by community members, we have made some changes to ISB’s campus access guidelines. Please see below:

Campus Access:

  • The campus will be open to the community from 6.40am to 8.00pm each day.
  • Students and community members may enter the school via:
    • the front main gate (from 6.40am to 8.00pm each day)
    • the back Sarawanville pedestrian gate (from 6.40am to 8.00pm each day)
    • the Sports Complex Gate (weekdays from 6:40am to 7:45am and 1:55pm to 6:45pm)
    • the ES bike shed gate (weekdays from 6:40am to 8:00am and 12:30pm to 5:00pm)
    • the HS bike shed gate (weekdays from 6:40am to 7:45am and 1:45pm to 3:30pm)
  • After 8:00pm students and adults may continue to cross the campus to get to and from Nichada and Sarawanville.
  • Visitors (non ISB community members) may only use the front main gate – not the Sarawanville pedestrian gate.
  • Adults must present ID to enter campus at all times.
  • Access times will be adjusted for events that run before and after normal opening hours. For example, events that run past 8:00pm, the campus closing time will be adjusted to 30 minutes after the scheduled end of the event (e.g. Spirit Night).
  • All buildings on campus will be secured at 6:00pm (or immediately after the event concludes) and access will only be granted to those personnel assigned to the space. Buildings will be opened at 5:00am on school days for ISB staff access. No student or parent will be allowed to access classrooms, offices, or other teaching spaces without the assigned staff member present.

Campus Use Regulations for Students by Division:

  • Any Elementary school student on campus outside of regular school hours, who is not participating in a school sponsored event (taking part or supporting), must be supervised by an adult in charge, appointed by the family. Elementary students are supervised by ISB staff from 7:00am – 2:20pm on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and 7:00am – 2:05pm on Tuesdays.
  • Middle School & High School students may use the following designated areas (if available) outside of school hours:
    • MS/HS Library (until 4:30pm MondayThursday, 3:30pm Friday.  Closed Weekends)
    • Track, Field D, tennis courts, and Cafeteria (until 6:00pm)
    • Auxiliary Gym (until 7:45pm)
    • Students may only use other areas of the school for school approved activities with adult supervision, eg. weight room, CC building practice rooms, etc.

Emergency Contact:

  • Parents should be aware that no adult supervision is provided outside of school hours and school sponsored activities.
  • Point of emergency contact – security guards are stationed at the main gate, front of school, sports complex, athletics area breezeway, and back gate by Sarawanville if needed in the event of an emergency. Except during school holidays, a school nurse is on campus until 8pm on weekdays and at certain weekend hours when events are scheduled.

Should you have any concerns about campus access, please contact ISB’s Head of Risk Management at markh@isb.ac.th.

Become a host family for ISB Thai Scholarship Students

By: Dr. Andrew Davies, Head of School
andrewd@isb.ac.th

ISB currently supports 3 female high-school students as part of our Thai Scholarship Program. This program is designed for highly capable Thai students whose families have a demonstrated financial need. It provides them with an opportunity to get an international education and be given opportunities not otherwise available to them. Our Thai Scholarship Program has been running for 6 years and is possible on account of the generosity of our parent community, who also support us in hosting our scholarship students.

“Hosting has been such a gift to our family! We’ve loved having a student with us, having her positive influence on our children, seeing our children consider what this other important person in our family may need/want, and just having another exceptional young person at our dinner table every night. I would recommend opening your heart and home to a scholarship student: The benefits far outweigh any costs,” current host parent.

We are looking for another family to host one of our students until June 2018. Ideally we are seeking a family that:

  • Lives close to ISB
  • Speaks English at home
  • Has a spare bedroom
  • Has a Middle School or High School aged child

Host families are expected to provide food, lodging and some incidental expenses. The ISB Scholarship Fund would take care of uniforms, cafeteria meals, school trips, some clothes, school supplies and equipment as needed, certain other incidentals and transportation costs home for holidays.

We are very appreciative to all our host families to date, who make it possible for these students to attend ISB and further their education. If you are interested in hosting, please complete the Host Family Expression of Interest Form by clicking on this link. If you should have any questions, please contact our Scholarship Program Coordinator, Ms. Shelley Bragg at shelleyb@isb.ac.th.

All families who submit an Interest Form will be contacted to arrange an appointment for an interview.

Last week to Register for 2016-2017 Baseball/Softball

By: Kevin Sypolt
ksypolt@gmail.com

If you have not registered your children for community baseball/softball, please do so right away.  Once teams are formed it is very unlikely we will allow late registrations.

Bangkok Baseball Softball Association (BBSA) has organized baseball/softball play for the past 56 years in Bangkok. There are leagues for boys and girls ages 4 yrs – 18 yrs.  Please note registration is open from now until November 11th.  We must register players now so we have time to hold player assessments, form teams and order player uniforms before play begins.  Current fees per player are THB 3,600.  Registration fees will increase to THB 4,100 on November 12th so be sure to register before that date.

You can make your payment at the Community Activity Office (CAO) or pay by Thai bank wire transfer.  Cash, credit cards and Thai baht checks are accepted for payment at the CAO office.  The CAO Office is open Monday – Friday7:00am to 11:00am and 12:00pm to 3:00pm.

Please note that BBSA is switching to fast pitch softball for the intermediate and senior girls softball leagues this year since ISB High School will begin playing fast pitch softball this year in the IASAS competition.

Player assessment will be held on Sunday November 13th at the ISB fields.  All players are strongly encouraged to attend their assessment sessions to allow the coaches to create fair and balanced teams.   Parents will be contacted about the specific times for their player’s assessment session.

Practices will begin the week of Nov 14th with Opening Day for baseball/softball on Saturday, Nov 19th.  All games are played on Friday evenings and Saturdays at ISB.  Games will continue every weekend until the league championships on the weekend of February 25th/26th.  There will be no games during the winter break at ISB but we will continue play on Saturday, January 7th 2017.  The game schedule will be published once we know how many players are registered.

All teams will practice once per week during the season as a weekly practice is important for skills development and to learn the fundamentals of teamwork, etc.  Most practices will take place at the ISB fields on weekday evenings (Monday – Thursday).  The team coach will determine when to have practice.  We have arranged a downtown Bangkok location for an optional weekly practice.  Parents will have to pay THB 500 for the season for this practice because of charges for field usage.  We are waiting to confirm which day we can have the practice.  All players should register to play even if they cannot commit to attending all weekly practice sessions.

On the registration form you will also have an opportunity to volunteer to be a coach, assistant coach or team parent.  Please consider helping out with your child’s team in some way.  The kids really love having their parents helping out with their team and you will have a great time.  No previous baseball experience is necessary.

BBSA has purchased a limited number of fielding gloves for players who need them.  These will be sold on our assessment day.

Please go to https://www.isb.ac.th/community-baseball to register.  If you have any questions, please contact Kevin Sypolt at ksypolt@gmail.com

Rabies…consider vaccination

By: Sally Plomley, Health Coordinator
nurse@isb.ac.th

Rabies is a fatal disease which is preventable with appropriate vaccination and treatment after a bite or scratch from an infected animal. It is estimated that 30-40% of street dogs are infected with rabies and so far there have been at least 8 confirmed deaths from rabies in Thailand this year (and the death rate may be higher as it is often undiagnosed or unreported).

Rabies is caused by a virus which affects the nervous system.

There are  about 55 000 rabies-related deaths worldwide each year. Bites from unvaccinated dogs cause most of these cases.

Once rabies is diagnosed survival is rare (only 2 reported cases of survival in people with no pre/post rabies exposure care). There is no specific treatment for rabies.

Rabies is spread by contact with the saliva of an animal infected by rabies. This could be due to a bite or even just a scratch from an infected animal. Once infected the onset of symptoms is usually 1-3 months but may be less than a week to more than a year.

Animals with rabies may be infectious for several weeks before symptoms appear and remain infectious until after they have died.

Symptoms:

  • Initially “flu-like” symptoms: general weakness, fever or headache which may last for days
  • Pain or an unusual or unexplained tingling, pricking or burning sensation (paraesthesia) at the wound site
  • “Furious” form (70-80% cases) will have hyperactivity, excited behaviour, confusion, fear of water and fresh air. Death occurs within a few days
  • “Paralytic” form (20-30% cases) will have gradual paralysis starting at the site of the bite/scratch and gradually spreading to involve the whole body, coma and death

Diagnosis:

There are no easy diagnostic tests for rabies and it is usually diagnosed on symptoms and after death.

Treatment:

There is no effective treatment currently available for people who have developed signs and symptoms of rabies. Survival is very unlikely even with advanced medical care.

Prevention:

  • Pre-Exposure:
    • Do not attempt to handle wild/unknown animals
    • Vaccination:
      • Pre-exposure vaccination is advised for travellers to many parts of the world especially if at risk of exposure to animals (such as travelling in rural areas). Parents should consider vaccinating their children as they are more likely to handle such animals and may not tell their parents if they get a scratch. It is also advised for people who will be living in an area where there is rabies (such as Thailand).
      • The schedule is 3 doses of the vaccine given on Day 0, Day 7 and Day 21-28
      • Side effects include redness and swelling at vaccine site, low grade fever, headache and lethargy.
  • Post-Exposure:
    • Wash the wound well with soap and water for at least 5 minutes
    • Apply an antiseptic solution such as povidone-iodine or alcohol
    • Seek immediate medical attention
    • If given soon enough after exposure (as soon as possible), rabies immunoglobulin (a solution containing human antibodies specific for rabies that is made from blood products) and rabies vaccine (4 doses on Day 0, Day 3, Day 7 and Day 14) can prevent development of infection. However, once symptoms develop, these infections are almost always fatal.
    • Booster rabies vaccination is also required post exposure with 2 doses of vaccine (at Day 0 and Day 3) in people who have had pre-exposure vaccine. No rabies immunoglobulin is required.
    • In some remote areas rabies immunoglobulin may not be available and thus individuals who have not had pre-exposure vaccination will be at increased risk of developing rabies.

Forward the Cure

By: Tico Oms, Middle School Dean of Students
ticoo@isb.ac.th

How many times have you thrown away unused medicine? That medicine could help a person with medical needs but without access to medicine. Please check out this short video of a campaign called “Forward The Cure” and share with your friends and family. It has never been easier to save a life. Simply clean out your medicine cabinets/drawers and drop off the medication at the ISB nurse’s office. Please don’t bring expired medicines. Those should be thrown away.

The medicines will then get packaged, checked and mailed to the hospital of Uhmpang and be on its way to save a life! Our 8th grade student Beam Lertbunnaphongs saw the video, thought the ISB community could help, and is organizing this initiative in conjunction with “Forward The Cure”. If you have any questions about this service project, please feel free to contact our nurse Sally Plomley at sallyp@isb.ac.th or the MS Dean of Students, Tico Oms at ticoo@isb.ac.th.

Sharing Athletic Gear

By: Tico Oms, Middle School Dean of Students
ticoo@isb.ac.th

Middle School kids infamously outgrow their sports shoes quickly. 8th grader, Piamkhun Sititantikorn (Jedi), has started a campaign to get those outgrown shoes to kids who could use them. He has formed a relationship with the Prasert Islam school to help give their athletes shoes for their sports teams. We are collecting athletic shoes and gear (such as shin guards) to donate to the school’s athletes. Simply bring your used/outgrown sports shoes and equipment to the Middle School Administration Offices. We will collect the gear and give it to the Prasert Islam school’s athletic teams.

Sports Highlights

By Derrick Quinet
derrickq@isb.ac.th

Congratulations IASAS Teams!

ISB’s varsity teams traveled to Taipei and Jakarta during the October holiday to wrap up their seasons at the IASAS championships. The boys soccer team earned a spot in the final against hosts JIS, and facing a raucous crowd, our Mighty Panthers came from one goal down, to scoring two in the final seven minutes to wrap up a magical season! Our girls soccer team highlighted their trip to Indonesia by holding eventual runners-up TAS scoreless, finishing 5th overall.

The boys cross country team landed in Taiwan on fire, having won the Thailand Invitational against a stacked group and cleaning up in claiming the BISAC championship. The hills high above Taipei proved challenging, with our boys splitting the two days events with SAS, eventually going down via the tie-breaker to claim silver. Our girls team showed the heart of a champion, braving the hills and showing their character in a strong finish for the Panthers!

The girls volleyball team opened the competition with a heart-stopping five-set win over ISM, and the thrills kept on coming. Our Panthers played with the best and gave it their all, eventually finishing 4th in a tight competition. The boys volleyball team demonstrated exceptional poise in a well-coached effort, competing in every game on their way to a 5th place finish.

Congratulations to all of our teams and players for their effort, and we want to show our sincere appreciation to our coaches for all of their time, care, and commitment this season. Well done Coaches Barnes and Barnes, Stephenson and Mackey, Kirk and O’Rourke, Speirs and Tahan, and Bentley and Giles.
