Counseling News

For all HS Parents – Two weeks ago we shared a great article entitled Are you a gardener or carpenter for your child? In continuing with that theme, take a moment to review this TED Talk from former Stanford Dean of Admission, Julie Lythcott-Haims. It also ties in nicely with the message from the recent consultant visit from Mr. Dan Grayson.

Grade 12  With the October 15 UCAS application deadline behind us, students have now turned their attention to US Early Decision/Action application deadlines of November 1 and 15 and have begun submitting applications with their counselor.  Students applying by November 1 or 15 are reminded to schedule an appointment as they are required to submit their first few applications with their counselor and then can complete and submit their remaining applications (10 total submitted applications) independently.

Next week will be a great time for Seniors to rest a bit after what has been a very busy first semester. They certainly deserve a break.  We hope you enjoy your time together.  As always, thank you for your continued support of your student/s.

Grade 11 – If there is a message we hope parents took away from our recent visit from Dan Grayson, it’s that while high school academic performance may be important, there are other factors of greater significance to student development. We hope the time off next week will be an ideal time for students to unplug, read for pleasure, get some rest, and enjoy time with family and friends. It’s such an important opportunity for students that shouldn’t be wasted.

Grade 10 – Now that we are heading into the well-deserved break, make sure that your sons and daughters get some quality downtime and recharge their batteries.  9-10 hours of sleep a night is something many of our students dream of; hopefully they ll get it regularly during the break.  Research is showing that extended time in front of a computer screen can increase stress levels, even if the activity is exciting/enjoyable for a person.  Get your son or daughter outside a bit and enjoy the (relatively) cool weather!  What book is your son/daughter reading? How about you?  There’s a conversation starter!  Enjoy your October break.

Grade 9 –  It was great to see so many 9th grade parents out at the teacher conferences. Hopefully you received some good feedback from our teachers. We also had a nice turnout at our Navigating High School Presentation for parents. I will be forwarding some resources from this presentation in the next couple of weeks.

Mr. Davy has continued to meet with 9th graders for individual conferences. These conferences check in on how high school has been for the first 9 weeks, and where students are at this moment in time both socially & academically.

In advisory this week, 9th graders had 2 sessions, one addressed honoring the passing of his majesty in a respectful manner. The other session we focused on GCW. Two forms where handed out that should come home to you. These should be returned by October 31st. The first of three GCW meetings for each individual trip will be just after the break. Freshman Seminar will also resume following. Please have a wonderful break!
