Counseling News

For all HS Parents – Two new books have been added to the ISB HS Counseling Library: Teach Your Children Well by Madeline Levine and The Complete Guide to the Gap Year by Kristin White. Stop by the counseling office to check these out and others. Also, a great article was published this week by the Greater Good Science Center: Are you a gardener or carpenter for your child?
Grade 12 – Seniors have been working diligently in classes as major deadlines (EE and TOK Presentation) have come and gone for many of them. As always, thank you for continuing to support them as they do their best to balance school, family, and social commitments. We hope this three day weekend gives Seniors a chance to recharge a bit and catch up on any work they might need to do.
Earlier this week several students attended a University of California (UC) Schools Workshop during Panther Block. They learned more about the unique UC application process and more importantly key differences between the UC campuses so that they can make an informed decision when deciding which campus/es to apply to.
Early Decision/Early Action – Any student planning on applying to the US under this early deadline must turn in a blue transcript request form no later than Monday, October 10.
Grade 11
We hope the October 7 conferences were a great opportunity for you to understand more about the learning happening in your 11th graders’ lives. It’s wonderful to see the amount of personal and academic growth students experience through the variety of IB classes offered. Students are learning to be their own advocate, increase critical thinking skills, and become more independent.
During this time, it’s important for students to focus on doing their personal best, and spend time reflecting on areas in which they thrive. This will prove important second semester when we begin to kick off the college research and application process.
Grade 10 – Did you get a chance to talk to all of your son’s/daughter’s teachers today at Parent/Teacher conferences? (And their counselor?) What is your impression of the start of the 2016-17 school year? Did you ask about the HAL grade (see last week’s newsletter)? The counselors are always happy to talk to you about the progress of your child. Don’t hesitate to make an appointment and come see us!
Grade 9 – This week Mr. Davy has continued to meet with his 9th graders for individual conferences. These conferences check in on how high school has been for the first 8 weeks, and where students are at this moment in time both socially & academically.
9th Grade Parents please be aware of the following event and please pass along:
9th Grade Parent Presentation

Do you have a child who is preparing to take either the SAT or the ACT in the upcoming months? If so, you may be interested in registering for The Princeton Review’s SAT/ ACT prep workshop. This is an entirely optional resource for students looking to enroll in a SAT or ACT prep workshop in the ISB campus from a reputable organisation.
When: November 20, 21, 27, 28, and December 4 (dates subject to change). Time: TBA.
Where: Reading, Writing and Math: ISB campus.
Science (if requested): Princeton Review’s Sathorn campus.
Who is it for: While this course is open to all ISB high school students, it is recommended that only students who are preparing to take the SAT/ ACT in the upcoming months register.
How it works: This workshop will be divided into two sections.
The first section will be offered at an ISB classroom and will cover reading, writing, and math skills (common for both SAT and ACT). The instruction time for this section is a total of 18 hours. The cost of this first section is THB 24,500/ students. All classroom materials will be provided.
