Bangkok International Strings Festival Concert: Sat Sep 24th!
By: Todd Weinhold, Director Panther Orchestras
toddw@isb.ac.th
Join us for the festival’s final concert at ISB’s Cultural Center Theater at 2:00pm on Saturday, September 24.
ISB is once again hosting the sixth annual Bangkok International Strings Festival this September 23-24! Soon, 75 high school orchestra students from international schools in Bangkok and Phuket will be coming together at ISB for 2 days of excellent music. The students get to work with a very accomplished guest conductor who will be flying to Bangkok from Minnesota, USA for the occasion.
The guest conductor, Mary Sorlie, was awarded the 2011 Minnesota String Orchestra Teachers Association’s Master Teacher Award. Ms. Sorlie is a frequent guest conductor and string clinician in the Midwest and is a member of WolfGang, a sextet which performs music of the 18th century. She resides in St. Paul, Minnesota with her husband Chuck and wonder dog, Lacie.
The festival orchestra will be performing a varied concert program, including works by Percy Fletcher, Antoinin Dvorak, and 20th century composer Norman Dello Joio.
This is going to be a great experience for Bangkok-area high school strings musicians and an excellent performance! Join us for the festival’s final concert at ISB’s Cultural Center Theater at 2:00pm on Saturday, September 24. Hope to see you there!

Parent Workshop: The Language Learning Mindset
By: Elizabeth Rossini, PhD, Director of Curriculum and Professional Learning
elizabethr@isb.ac.th
A Parent Workshop facilitated by Greta Lundgaard
Wednesday, September 21,
2-3:15, MPB 1
How can teachers capture the attention and engagement of today’s language learners and, at the same time, grow their abilities to use and communicate with the new language? Best practices in world language education align with best practices in general education: learners need to be given cognitively challenging tasks that are personally relevant, emotionally engaging, and socially satisfying. World language teachers and world language departments are responding to this challenge by reconstructing the language learning mindset, renovating the language learning environment, and revising assessment practices and evaluation systems. Each of these components has specific descriptors and criteria that can be recognized and appreciated, and this workshop will briefly provide descriptions and explanations of each from a layman’s perspective. Additionally, parents will better understand the stages of language development over time.

Traffic flow to access ISB
By: Mark Hevland, Head of Risk Management
markh@isb.ac.th
Mornings and afternoons are a busy time when it comes to traffic at school. Access to ISB is restricted to one gate and we understand that comes with some challenges. A recent survey this school year showed we had a daily average of 394 cars, 106 golf carts and 44 motor cycles entering the front gate between the hours of 6:45 – 7:45 am. In the afternoon, between 1:45 – 3:00 pm, we had 182 cars, 77 golf carts, and 11 motorcycles enter the gate. These numbers are excluding the 46 Montri buses and vans that come to campus every morning and anyone entering before or after the surveyed times.
We would like to reduce extended wait times as best we can, while being mindful of the Nichada residents who are not associated with ISB, but are affected as they make their way to work.
In partnership with Nichada, we have designated traffic lanes for the ISB community. Here you will find a map clearly showing the assigned lanes for the roundabout in front of the school, which aims to reduce some of the traffic difficulties.
It is required that the ISB Community members use the right lane to access the school after entering the Nichada main gate. The left lane is designated for non-ISB vehicles so that they may move past the main ISB entrance and through Nichada unrestricted. If you are currently using an Express pass, this only gets you in the left lane at the Nichada gate but you will then need to move to the right lane to access ISB.
We do understand the challenges associated with accessing campus in the morning. We thank you for your continued patience and understanding as we work to maintain a safe environment for all our community stakeholders.
Cafeteria News: Do you know about our homemade goodness?
By: ISB Cafeteria (Michelle), Epicure Catering Manager
cafeteria@isb.ac.th
Approximately 98% of what we serve in the cafeterias across campus is home baked, hand cut, hand grated, home cooked, and hand prepared by our 50 strong team every morning. This includes all the items at The Grind, the hamburger buns for BBQ Friday, the baguette bread for the sandwiches, the tortillas for the ES Canteen, the homemade chicken & vegetable stock for all the soups, the pineapple juice for our punch, our slow brewed Iced Tea, and the home roasted meats for our sandwich bar.
We believe that Basic is Best. Food in its basic form carries the most amount of nutrients for our bodies and is optimally digested, hence allowing us the maximum benefits from the foods we eat. Epicure Catering welcomes a fresh delivery of produce and meats daily, striving to use recipes with only the most natural ingredients. We look forward to another year of providing well balanced, nutritious, tasty meals to all of our very eager and hungry customers, mainly your kids.
Parents are also welcome in the HS/MS Cafeteria for breakfast, lunch and snack. Enjoy.
