Home Agreements on Laptop Use for 6th Grade Students

by Tico Oms

Prior to having 6th grade students take their laptops home on Monday, September 26, we require that parents have conversations with students on boundaries and expectations around computer usage at home (7th and 8th grade students have done this and take their laptops home already).

It is important for parents to set guidelines and expectations for computer use in the home and to continue to revisit those guidelines as their child matures and as technology changes. We remind you that you still maintain parental authority over how, when, and where your child uses technology in your home. Your support and guidance are critical as students learn to navigate their digital lives.

Parent Workshop: The Language Learning Mindset (Repeat Announcement)

by Cindy Plantecoste, MS Dean of Academics

Don’t miss out on an exciting opportunity to learn about the research, philosophy, and practices that influenced the development of our new MS World Language Program.  Throughout the week of September 19 – 23, our MS World Language team will be working with, learning from and co-planning with Great Lundgaard,  a consultant from ACTFL (American Council on the teaching of Foreign Languages).  As part of her visit, she will offer the following session that is designed specifically for our parent community:

The Language Learning Mindset

A Parent Workshop facilitated by Greta Lundgaard

Wednesday, September 21,

2-3:15, MPB 1

How can teachers capture the attention and engagement of today’s language learners and, at the same time, grow their abilities to use and communicate with the new language?  Best practices in world language education align with best practices in general education:  learners need to be given cognitively challenging tasks that are personally relevant, emotionally engaging, and socially satisfying.  World language teachers and world language departments are responding to this challenge by reconstructing the language learning mindset, renovating the language learning environment, and revising assessment practices and evaluation systems.  Each of these components has specific descriptors and criteria that can be recognized and appreciated, and this workshop will briefly provide descriptions and explanations of each from a layman’s perspective. Additionally, parents will better understand the stages of language development over time.

These hour long coffees are informal opportunities for parent to learn more about our middle school program. Some light snacks and coffee and tea will be provided.

At the Parent Coffee on September 27th, we will have MS math teachers present our middle school math program. We hope you can join us for this session, meet other parents, and learn more about the learning your child is experiencing.
