High School Open House
Philip Bradley
philipb@isb.ac.th

We cordially invite you to our annual Open House on Thursday the 8th of September. Parents will have the opportunity to attend classes according to their son’s or daughter’s schedule. In this way we hope that you will gain much useful information about the courses your son/s and daughter/s are taking and understand more about the learning environment we foster at ISB. This in turn will allow you more opportunities to engage in learning focused conversations with your child/children.

Please plan on arriving shortly after 6:00 p.m. As you arrive make your way to the front of Chevron Theater. In front of the Theater you will collect an individualized schedule for each of your children – this will guide you throughout the evening with details on periods, teachers and locations.

There will be a technology session starting at 6:15 p.m. in the Chevron Theater – this will cover a lot of helpful information for parents so that we are better able to support our children.

At 6:30 p.m. there will be an introductory assembly held in the Chevron Theater.
From 7:00 – 9:10 p.m. parents will follow the eight period HS schedule.

What’s Happening in HS Advisory:
Andy Vaughan
andyv@isb.ac.th

We hope that your High School child has come home after the first week of school sharing some of the exciting changes within the High School this year, markedly the addition of a new Advisory Program. This will be one of key areas of focus for this year and a constant theme for our HS PTA meetings.

We will be sending updates throughout the year from our Grade Level Leaders explaining more about this program and will be explaining more about the changes that have taken place already in the upcoming PTA meeting on Thursday 1 September, we hope you can join us to learn more about this exciting new initiative.

This is the first update and aims to give you an idea of what each grade level is covering as we begin the school year:

Grade 9
In Grade 9 advisory the focus is on getting involved in High School and enjoying learning in the High School environment. Over the next few weeks students will be getting to know each other and working on ways to form a supportive community. We will also take on a 30-day challenge – where students will be asked to try something new for 30 days. This will be a prelude to more detailed goal-setting as the year goes on. Please contact Eleanor Brock (eleanorb@isb.ac.th) if you have specific questions about Grade 9 Advisory.

Grade 10
In grade 10 advisory, our focus is on creating habits of mind and health. Students have been challenged with a 30-day challenge – with a focus that anyone can can commit to something for 30-days to better their lives. Ideally, the 30-day challenge allows students to set smaller chunked goals instead of massive goals that can be considered overwhelming. Students are getting support from their peers and advisor to help them along their journey. Throughout the challenge, students are continually reflecting on commitment, learning opportunities and failures. Our take home message during this unit is about the learning opportunities and valuable lessons failure holds. The following quote best resonates our main message “Failure, as much as it hurts and disappoints, is an important part of life.” Please feel free to contact Peter Assimakopoulos via email at petera@isb.ac.th.

Grade 11
As students assume their places as ‘upperclassmen’ in grade 11 in the High School, the nature, variety and extent of demands made on them so often increases.  It is therefore the goal of advisory in Grade 11 to support students in effectively meeting personal, school, social and family demands and expectations . During the first quarter each student will reflect on which of his or her responsibilities require mindful balance to ensure effectiveness, health and happiness. Goals will be set accordingly.  The role of developing clear open channels of communication with family, friends and teachers will then be addressed as a crucial in element in achieving balance. Please feel free to contact Ginny Voigt with any matters concerning advisory via mail at ginnyv@isb.ac.th.

Grade 12
The G12 advisory program is centred on getting ready for life after High School. Our focus in August has been to make a strong start to the year, forging relationships with peers in advisory and reflecting on last year’s successes and areas of growth. In the next two weeks, G12 students will be setting goals for the rest of the year, making sure they strike a balance between academic life, personal well-being, and caring for others. In September, the focus will be on communication, where students will learn vital skills such as “saying no”, living with a roommate or dealing with conflict. Please contact Nancy Le Nezet (nancyl@isb.ac.th) if you have questions or suggestions about the G12 advisory program.

Counseling News

For all parents – New Parent Library! Transitions, raising boys, stress, general parenting, and the college process…come check out the new selection of books that are available for check out from the HS Counseling Office. We hope this new parent library will be a helpful resource for all high school parents. The check out period is 2 weeks.

Grade 12 – It was great to meet with your student/s earlier this week for our first Senior Seminar! Much of what we discussed with them we also discussed with you at Senior Parent night last night. We hope you found the evening helpful.  The following links include the PowerPoint presentation (if you were unable to attend or want to look it over again), a copy of the Timeline, and the College Visit Calendar:

This Monday, August 29, students who are applying to the UK are required to attend a UCAS Registration session during Panther Block (10:20am).

On Tuesday, August 30, students who are applying to the US are required to attend a Common App. session immediately after school from 1:20-3:00pm in the MPB.  It is an early dismissal day.

We greatly appreciate your support to ensure your Senior participates in the wealth of opportunities provided to assist them through their university process.  It takes a village!

Grade 11 – It’s been a great first couple of weeks. We’ve seen 11th graders taking on more responsibility both in formal leadership roles, but also in being welcoming to new students. Juniors have also been positive and resilient in adjusting to the changes in the daily schedule and club fair.

We hope that as the year progresses and Juniors begin to juggle school and activities, you can continue to help them find balance. While students are growing more in their ability to organize and manage their lives, it’s important to remember that they still need your parental love, support, wisdom, and care.

One calendar adjustment to make note of: The Junior Parent Night has been renamed to G11 College Night. This is noted on the electronic/Google calendars. Also, this evening session will include both parents and students. The date is still the same: January 18.

Finally, the PSAT will be offered to all ISB 11th grade students during the school day on Wednesday, October 19. This is a preliminary and practice test. There is no additional preparation needed for this practice assessment. In the coming weeks, counselors will meet with students to explain more. Please note that any 11th grade student who does not need this test should meet with their counselor to discuss opting out.

Helpful Links:

Grade 10 – It’s been a busy two weeks for all of the high school students and the 10th graders seem quite settled in their classes.  Be sure and talk to your son or daughter and make sure that:  a) they have a good idea of the expectations of their teachers; b) they have a plan to be organized in managing their time and keeping their assignments organized; and c) they know how to “chill” and refresh their batteries after a long school day and week.  Encourage your son or daughter to come by the counseling area and say hi to us!  We’ll be checking in with them soon as well.

Grade 9 – Week 2 has passed for Grade 9 and hopefully you’ll find your student establishing some routines. One very simple routine I advise students is to complete homework on the night it is assigned. This way if they need to visit the teacher for further assistance or edit/polish their work they can the next day.

Students also continued to be introduced to clubs and activities this week and we had a visit from Mrs. Hansberry (Activities Coordinator) in Freshman Seminar. She explained different types of service opportunities at ISB, service hour requirements for graduation (10 per year), and how to record/document service performed by the student.

It was great to see 15 individuals put themselves forward as student council members. 4 members will be elected by the class. I feel the class will be very well represented. All in all we are off to a really good start with the class of 2020.

Mindfulness Opportunities for all HS ISB Students!
Becky Hansberry
beckyh@isb.ac.th

What is Mindfulness?
Mindfulness is all about learning to direct our attention to our experience as it unfolds. Rather than worrying about what has happened or might happen, it trains us to respond skillfully to whatever is happening right now, be that good or bad.

Who is it for?
Everyone!  Mindfulness is research based and proven to improve the quality of living for everyone.  Think of it the same as exercise…exercise is good for everyone, not just people who are unfit!

Option 1:  Panther Period
There will be a mindfulness/meditation option during panther period every day 8 in Room 3-111.  Contact Mr. Bowman for more information (pbowman@isb.ac.th).

Option 2: After School Activity
All students are invited to participate in the “.b” (pronounced “dot be”) Mindfulness program starting on Wednesdays, September 14th from 2:35-3:05 pm. The program runs for 9 weeks.  Contact Ms. Perkins for more information (brendap@isb.ac.th).  Location to be determined later.

Come find your still quiet place.
