Annual Medical Screening For Students

by Sally PLOMLEY
sallyp@isb.ac.th

It is the time of year when we need to start the medical screening process for ALL students.

We have modified the screening process so there is a basic medical screen for most students with a more extensive screen for students entering Grades 3, 6, 9 and 11 which includes a tuberculosis screen. Any student who has had a new student medical examination after January 2016 will not need a repeat examination. All students must fill in the Nurse Medication Consent form.

Forms are available for download from the ISB website. ISB Health Services Forms and Resources

Any student with Diabetes, Asthma or Anaphylaxis will also need an action plan filled out by the doctor. Forms are available for download from the ISB website. ISB Health Services Forms and Resources

ALL FORMS MUST BE SUBMITTED TO THE HEALTH CLINIC BY JUNE 30 2016 either in person or via email nurse@isb.ac.th

Table 1.

The medicals can be done by any registered medical practitioner either in Thailand or your home country. Many health insurance companies will cover annual medical screening for children. The medicals examinations for students entering K and grades 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10 and 12 can now be done at the Bumrungrad Nichada Clinic (with referral to the hospital is any issues). They can also be done at World Medical Center or Samitivej Hospital. All other students will need to attend Bumrungrad Hospital, World Medical Center or Samitivej Hospital.

Packages have been negotiated for Bumrungrad and World Medical Center as outlined below. Please make your child’s booking for the “ISB Student Physical Examination” and take all the forms for the doctor to fill out (as required). Please note there may be an additional 100 THB for equipment and additional fees if there are additional reviews or tests are required due to abnormalities.

The gift of Blood is the gift of Life! Blood donations….All Blood Types Required!

Sally Plomley
sallyp@isb.ac.th

The Thailand Red Cross never has enough blood. We are organizing the donation center to come to ISB on May 2 to collect blood from willing donors. To donate blood you need to pre-register and fill in the appropriate registration form. All donors should be 17-55 years old and will be reviewed by the donation team to ensure they are ok to donate (this includes a check of their hemoglobin prior to donation).

The blood that is donated will be used by the Red Cross for potentially life saving blood, plasma and platelet transfusions.

Sterile techniques are used for blood donations and all blood is screened for infectious diseases after it is donated. All potential donors should be fit and healthy on the day of donation and will need to fill in a questionnaire prior to donation (please see donation guidelines below to see if you are ok to donate). Please ensure you are well rested, well hydrated and have a low fat breakfast/lunch prior to donating.

If you are willing to donate (and meet the criteria below) please sign up through Signup Genius (Blood donation sign up), Facebook “Blood Donation Information Page- Expats in Thailand” or email Blooddriveisb@gmail.com. Volunteers will also be at Villa in Nichada in the mornings and afternoons this week to assist with signups.

Donations will be 9am-12pm and 1-3pm.

Negative Blood Group Database:

At times the Red Cross is in desperate need of Rh negative blood as not many Thais are Rh negative. Those with negative blood can also provide contact details so they can join a database and be contacted to see if they are willing to donate when this blood type is urgently required.

Registration for the Stem Cell Donor Database:

When you donate you may also want to sign up to be on the stem cell donor register. Stem cells are used in the treatment of certain cancer and other medical conditions. Information will be provided on the day about being a stem cell donor.

The Red Cross defines an acceptable donor as one whom:

  •        Is between the ages of 17-55.
  •        Weighs at least 45 kg (99 lbs).

Donating is not advised if you:

  •        Are pregnant or breastfeeding.

  •        Had diarrhea in the past seven days.
  •        Had dental treatment in the past three days.

  •        Have asthma, epilepsy, chronic skin disease, chronic cough, tuberculosis, allergies, high blood pressure, heart/kidney/thyroid disease, cancer, bleeding disorder, etc.
  •        Have had ear/body piercings, tattoos made or removed, or acupuncture in the past year.
  •        Have received any vaccinations in the past two months except seasonal Flu vaccine.
  •        Have received a serum injection in the past year.

Before donating blood you should:

  •        Get enough sleep (at least six hours).
  •        Drink at least 3-4 cups of pure water to prepare your system and avoid getting dizzy.

Registration for the 17th Colgate Kids Triathlon is now open!

by Kevin M. Sypolt
ksypolt@gmail.com

Registration for the 17th Colgate Kids Triathlon is now open.   The race will take place on Coronation Day, Thursday May 5th (ISB holiday) at 7:30AM starting at the two ISB pools.   Registration and other information can be found at https://www.isb.ac.th/colgate-kids-triathlon.  Please note that race maps are also posted on the website

The fee per participant is THB 500 and all participants must provide a volunteer to help on race day or pay a THB 2,000 fee if they can’t provide a volunteer.

It’s shaping up to be an incredible event!  Again this year the triathletes (7 years old and up) will receive timing chips to wear around their ankles for accurate time and distance recording.  The Relay Race will allow relay teams in each age division (based upon the oldest participant in the relay team), so athletes can form teams of three people to participate together.  One of the relay team members can even be a teacher or other adult but this means that all 3 members of the relay team must complete the 15+ age groups distances shown below.  Please note that only one registration is required for the relay team.  Each individual member of the relay team should not register.

The distances this year will be:

• 5-6 year old :  50m swim, 1km bike, 450m run
• 7-8 year old: 100m swim, 2.5 km bike, 800m run
• 9-10 year old:  150m swim, 4.5 km bike, 1.0 km run
• 11-12 year old: 200m swim, 4.5 km bike, 1.7 km run
• 13-14 year old: 250m swim, 6.8 km bike, 2.4 km run
• 15+ year old : 350m swim, 9.1 km bike, 3.1 km run

Registration will close on Friday, April 29th or when 210 athletes have registered, whichever comes first.  So please register now to avoid disappointment.

Please note that all participants must provide their own bike and bike helmet.
Please contact me if you have any questions.

Thanks

2016 Yoga Pray for Nepal – May 7th

Napisa  C. Pant

bills@isb.ac.th

This month is the one year anniversary of the horrible earthquakes that afflicted Nepal. The Moonlight Foundation runs the Moonlight school which serves children living in poverty in Kathmandu.  Because they are the host of our HS GCW trips, we would like to continue to support their recovery.  Through the generous response of the Nichada, ISB and yoga community last year, we were able to provide them with the money to rebuild their school.  But they are still struggling financially and need continued support.  It’s common for when natural disasters strike, supporters pour their hearts out at first but then quickly it falls out of the news and our thoughts.

We would like to invite you to continue our support to the Moonlight Foundation.

The limited collection of T-shirt will be available for your donation starting April 25, at HS cafeteria, ES Walkway and yoga community.

Yoga Pray For Nepal, Fund raised event. Sat, May7th, 8:00-9:30 am. at HS Dance room, CCT Building .

Yoga practice lead by ISB Parents to ease you to the Compassionate Mindfulness practice guided by Mrs. Jackie Greenwood, Middle School Counselor.
