by Joy Davy
joy.davy@yahoo.com

The ISB Board of Trustees would like to announce its annual election, which will take place on Tuesday, May 17, 2016, the day of the International School Association (ISA) Annual General Meeting. Election results will be announced that evening at the 7:00 pm AGM. Board nominations opened on Friday, March 18 and close on Friday, April 8.

The ISB Board of Trustees is currently composed of eleven elected positions and up to four appointed positions. This year there will be three open seats on the Board to be filled by election. Newly elected trustees will serve a two-year term, beginning August 1, 2016.

The Board is the guardian of the school’s mission, and as such sets policy, focuses on school governance and addresses long-term, strategic issues. The Board is not involved in day-to-day school management.  The full Board meets once a month in an open regular session, followed by a closed executive session. Board meetings occur in the evenings at ISB and last approximately two-three hours. Trustees also serve on one or more committees corresponding to their skills and interests. Current committees are the Business Committee, the Committee on Trustees, and the Strategic Improvement and Learning Committee. Committees meet once a month for one-two hours and are the working groups of the Board. Subjects such as financial stability, budget oversight, stewardship of ISB’s educational program, evaluation and training of the Board, and future strategic improvements in alignment with the mission of ISB, are examples of issues addressed by the committees.

What is a Trustee?

by Joy Davy
joy.davy@yahoo.com

What is a Trustee?

Are you not certain what the ISB Board of Trustees actually does? Perhaps you don’t know what the division of responsibility is between the Board and the School Administration? Or how the Board differs from the PTA? Are you undecided whether or not to run in the upcoming ISB Board of Trustees election? We can help to answer those questions.

Prospective candidates, and all interested members of the community, are warmly welcome to attend this informative evening session–What is a Trustee?”—which will be held on Tuesday, April 5, 6:30 pm at the MPB3. Please note that this is a date change from that originally published in the ISB calendar.

You need not be a prospective candidate to attend this practical session. It is also an opportunity to learn about the roles, responsibilities and work of the Board of Trustees (BOT), in general. We welcome all members of our community to join us.

For candidates, please be reminded that the deadline for submission of BOT Nomination Forms is Friday, April 8, 2016 at 12 noon. Forms must be submitted in 2 formats: 1) by email to Board secretary, Joy Davy at joy.davy@yahoo.com (with your name as subject line) and 2) hard copy with Khun Oor, at the Head of School office.

For more information, please contact Elizabeth Bredin at 095-475-2364 or esbredin@gmail.com

Hot Weather and Snakes

by Sally Plomley, ISB Health Coordinator
sallyp@isb.ac.th

Rick Nelson, ISB Safety Manager
rickn@isb.ac.th

Warmer weather tends to bring out snakes to our campus and surrounding neighborhoods.  Some snakes in southeast Asia are venomous and quite dangerous. Please caution your children to be cautious and avoid bushes and hidden spots. If you see a snake on campus or around your home do not go near or try to capture the snake.  Instead, alert an ISB security guard (if by phone at extension 7705) or if in Nichada Thani, a Nichada Security Guard immediately.  The guards are trained and have the appropriate equipment to capture and remove the snake.

If someone is bitten by a snake on campus, ensure the person is not at risk of being bitten again and call the nurse (extension 1111). Do not take the person to the nurse. The nurse will clean the wound, immobilise the limb and arrange transfer to hospital.

If bitten in the community, again protect everyone from further bites. Clean the bite with antiseptic solution (such as betadine)  and apply a sterile dressing. Remove all jewelry (rings, bracelets, etc.) from the victim.  Then apply a firm bandage from the end of the limb to the trunk. Do NOT remove this bandage until at hospital. Limit the movement of the person as you take them to hospital (for example carry them to the car/ambulance if possible). Mongkutwattana General Hospital (34/40 Chaengwattana Rd) stocks antivenom and would be the best hospital to take the person to. If you need an ambulance call World Medical Centre (02 836 9977).

Be aware that many bites do not actually cause envenomation or the snake was not venomous. As there can be complications with giving antivenom most hospitals will observe the patient for signs of envenomation rather than giving the antivenom straight away. They will observe the patient clinically and do blood tests. They will give antivenom if it is indicated.

Registration for the 17th Colgate Kids Triathlon is now open!

by Kevin M. Sypolt
ksypolt@gmail.com

Registration for the 17th Colgate Kids Triathlon is now open.   The race will take place on Coronation Day, Thursday May 5th (ISB holiday) at 7:30AM starting at the two ISB pools.  Registration and other information can be found at https://www.isb.ac.th/colgate-kids-triathlon.  Please note that race maps are also posted on the website

The fee per participant is THB 500 and all participants must provide a volunteer to help on race day or pay a THB 2,000 fee if they can’t provide a volunteer.

It’s shaping up to be an incredible event!  Again this year the triathletes (7 years old and up) will receive timing chips to wear around their ankles for accurate time and distance recording.  The Relay Race will allow relay teams in each age division (based upon the oldest participant in the relay team), so athletes can form teams of three people to participate together.  One of the relay team members can even be a teacher or other adult but this means that all 3 members of the relay team must complete the 15+ age groups distances shown below.  Please note that only one registration is required for the relay team.  Each individual member of the relay team should not register.

The distances this year will be:

• 5-6 year old :  50m swim, 1km bike, 450m run
• 7-8 year old: 100m swim, 2.5 km bike, 800m run
• 9-10 year old:  150m swim, 4.5 km bike, 1.0 km run
• 11-12 year old: 200m swim, 4.5 km bike, 1.7 km run
• 13-14 year old: 250m swim, 6.8 km bike, 2.4 km run
• 15+ year old : 350m swim, 9.1 km bike, 3.1 km run

Registration will close on Friday, April 29th or when 210 athletes have registered, whichever comes first.  So please register now to avoid disappointment.

Please note that all participants must provide their own bike and bike helmet.

Please contact me if you have any questions.

Thanks

The gift of Blood is the gift of Life! Blood donations….All Blood Types Required!

by Sally PLOMLEY
sallyp@isb.ac.th

The Thailand Red Cross never has enough blood. We are organizing the donation center to come to ISB on May 2 to collect blood from willing donors. To donate blood you need to pre-register and fill in the appropriate registration form. All donors should be 17-55 years old and will be reviewed by the donation team to ensure they are ok to donate (this includes a check of their hemoglobin prior to donation).

The blood that is donated will be used by the Red Cross for potentially life saving blood, plasma and platelet transfusions.

Sterile techniques are used for blood donations and all blood is screened for infectious diseases after it is donated. All potential donors should be fit and healthy on the day of donation and will need to fill in a questionnaire prior to donation (please see donation guidelines below to see if you are ok to donate). Please ensure you are well rested, well hydrated and have a low fat breakfast/lunch prior to donating.

If you are willing to donate (and meet the criteria below) please sign up through Signup Genius (Blood donation sign up), Facebook “Blood Donation Information Page- Expats in Thailand” or email Blooddriveisb@gmail.com.

Donations will be 9am-12pm and 1-3pm.

Negative Blood Group Database:

At times the Red Cross is in desperate need of Rh negative blood as not many Thais are Rh negative. Those with negative blood can also provide contact details so they can join a database and be contacted to see if they are willing to donate when this blood type is urgently required.

Registration for the Stem Cell Donor Database:

When you donate you may also want to sign up to be on the stem cell donor register. Stem cells are used in the treatment of certain cancer and other medical conditions. Information will be provided on the day about being a stem cell donor.

The Red Cross defines an acceptable donor as one whom:

  • Is between the ages of 17-55.
  • Weighs at least 45 kg (99 lbs).

Donating is not advised if you:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Gave birth or had a miscarriage in the past six months.
  • Had diarrhea in the past seven days.
  • Had dental treatment in the past three days.
  • Had major surgery in the past six months or minor surgery in the past seven days.
  • Have a history of drug use or been imprisoned in the past three years.
  • Received a blood transfusion in the past year.

  • Have had ear/body piercings, tattoos made or removed, or acupuncture in the past year.
  • Have received any vaccinations in the past two months except seasonal Flu vaccine.
  • Have received a serum injection in the past year.

Before donating blood you should:

  • Get enough sleep (at least six hours).
  • Drink at least 3-4 cups of pure water to prepare your system and avoid getting dizzy.
  • Eat something healthy that is low in fat. No high fat foods for 6 hours preceding donation.
