Student Led Conferences – March 10, 11
We are looking forward to welcoming you to school for Student Led Conferences
on March 10 and 11. These conferences provide students with an opportunity to
communicate and reflect deeply about their learning. Having students lead the
conference keeps them at the center of the learning process and helps students and parents:
- celebrate achievements
- acknowledge learning challenges
- consider how learning habits and attitudes have changed, and
- set learning goals for the future
Detailed information about the structure of the student led conferences in homeroom classes will be available through your child’s class blog and/or Friday Folders before conferences. Please note that while the purpose of the Student Led Conferences is not for individual conversations between parents and teachers, there will be an opportunity made available for you to spend a small part of the homeroom conference with the teacher. Also note that there will often be more than one family in your child’s classroom during the conference.
Individualized letters for making appointments for student led conferences were sent home with students today (Friday Feb 26). Please be aware that the online scheduler Pick-a-Time will open at 8am this coming Tuesday, March 1 and remain open until 2pm on Tuesday March 8.
You will need your child’s ISB Student ID number and birth date to register, provided in the letter sent home today. To get to the Conference Scheduler, please open this link and then follow the directions below.

How to Schedule Appointments

- Then click on “Create Appointment”.
- Repeat until you have a time with each teacher
- You can click on the “Printable Schedule” link located on the top right corner and print the resulting web page to get a hard copy of your schedule.
Please be sure to book individual appointments with specialist teachers for each of your children.
ES Parent Education Workshop – March 3, 2016
Mathematical Reasoning
What does it mean to construct a viable mathematical argument? How might one critique the reasoning of others and why is this important? At this month’s parent training we will be focusing on these questions and digging into what this mathematical practice looks like in elementary classrooms. We will also share strategies for how you can support mathematical thinking with your children at home. Don’t miss it! Thursday, March 3rd from 7:30 – 8:30 in the ES MPR.
* Directly following, from 8:30 – 9:00 we will take a look at the Stanford Online course: How to Learn Math for Parents and Teachers. All are encouraged to stay for this! Here is the link to information about the Discussion Group.
Junior and Senior Choirs start next week!
Next Wednesday, March 2, ES Choirs are back! We have an exciting second half of our school year planned for our choirs and we look forward to seeing our singers again! Junior Choir will meet in Mrs. Wong’s music room and Senior Choir will meet in the MS Choir Room. Rehearsal is every Wednesday from 2:15-3:15. If you’re interested in joining choir for the second half of the year you can sign up here.

(Repeat) Math Learning Opportunity for Parents!
How can we support our children’s development as mathematicians? How to Learn Math: For Parents and Teachers is an online MOOC (massive open online course) through Stanford University that is taught by professor Jo Boaler, author of Mathematical Mindsets and What’s Math Got to Do With It? This 8-session, self-paced course has received positive reviews from both parents and teachers. Kim Bentley will be hosting a discussion group for parents interested in processing the big ideas and questions that come up throughout the course. To find out more about joining this discussion group, please click here.
(Repeat) Grade 5 Book Sale
The Grade 5 Used Book Sale is an annual event that takes place in April. All proceeds from this fundraiser go to the Mercy Center in Klong Toey, where the money is used to support the underprivileged in attending school.
If you have any used books or magazines that are in good condition, we would love to help you recycle these books while at the same time contributing to such a worthwhile cause. Books can be put in the drop boxes located outside of the ES Library and Main Office.
Please be aware of what you are donating. They can be adult, teen, or children books, fiction and non-fiction. However, it would be great if you could refrain from giving any text books, instruction manuals, or books that are out-of-date.
