MS COUNSELOR CORNER

Wellness In January

Welcome back to second semester!

During the months of January and February the wellness lessons across the grades will have some variation:

Gr. 6 classes will start our lessons on substance abuse. We will be concentrating on Tobacco, Alcohol and Marijuana. Research shows that the likelihood of student use of alcohol and other drugs is related to a young person’s perception of the negative effects of using these substances. When they are aware of the negative effects they are less likely to use these substances. We will use discussion, videos and health related materials to help students understand and think through the ways in which their brains, bodies and relationships may be damaged by using tobacco, alcohol, or marijuana.

Gr. 7 classes are finishing off their personal safety lessons. They are working on safety plans and strategies to keep themselves safe. They will be starting their substance abuse lessons in the near future and as with Gr. 6 they will be learning about the harmful effects of various drugs.

Gr. 8 classes are beginning their lessons on adolescent development. We have a parent presentation on these lessons coming up next week. Be sure to read the invitation in this newsletter and sign up. The presentation will go over content and how we teach these lessons.

We hope to see many parents from Grades 6, 7, and 8 at our parent presentation on adolescent development and sexual health next Thursday, 28th, at 9:00am in MPB1.

Please see the invitation and sign up in this newsletter.

Warm Regards,

Carmel (Gr. 6); Janel (Gr. 7) and Jackie (Gr. 8)
