Bangkok All-Stars U12 Team Wins 3 Straight Tournaments!

by Andy Minckler
andy@mincklermail.com

The Bangkok All-Stars U12 travel baseball team continues to enjoy its most successful season ever, having won 2 more tournaments over the holidays:  The Bangkok Christmas Classic and the Manila Goodwill Games.  Playing host to teams from Dubai and Singapore, along with Bangkok’s Japanese / Thai team, the Thunder, the All-Stars went undefeated in winning the Christmas Classic in thrilling fashion!  Milan Pant provided much of the fireworks by hitting a dramatic walk-off (game ending) homerun in its final round robin game over the Thunder.  Jake Shain also hit his first homerun of the year, in a classic back and forth battle with the Thunder.  Milan, the deserved Tournament MVP, then answered the call again in the Championship final, smacking another walk-off hit to score the winning run in the bottom of the last inning vs. the Thunder.  Championship #2!

The All-Stars then traveled to Manila for its 5th consecutive year participating in the Goodwill Games Tournament.  Three very strong teams from the Philippines joined Bangkok and Singapore in the U12 division.  The All-Stars got off to great start by winning all 3 of its first round robin games vs. Singapore, ILAM and Samar from the Philippines, guaranteeing them a place in the Final Championship game on Sunday.  Matthew Minckler had a hot bat with numerous base hits, including 6 doubles.  Oliver Ellison and Hiroki Saito also helped power the offense, along with some great defense.  The All-Stars then faced a very different looking Samar team in the finals, with their big, ace pitcher on the mound this time.  Samar drew first blood with a run-scoring single to take a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning.  But the All-Stars took back the lead thanks to Justin Blumenthal’s shot over the fence in the bottom of the 4th inning, his 5th homerun of the tournament.  Bangkok’s superior pitching and stingy defense then took over, highlighted by Cole Westerman’s two amazing catches in center field, one of which robbed Samar’s hitter of a homerun.  The All-Stars eventually prevailed by a score of 6-1, for its 3rd straight tournament victory.

The Bangkok All-Stars U12 team will next play at home again, from 23-26 March in the SEABYST International Tournament, featuring teams from Jakarta, Perth, Singapore and Manila.  Come out and support the team as we vie for our 4th title of the year!

The ULTIMATE Job & Maria Run a BIG Success!

by Caryn Macky
carynm@isb.ac.th

Success can’t always be counted, but these numbers have something to say:

1) 240 energetic runners PLUS their cheering families and friends attended the Job & Maria Charity Fun Run this past Friday.

2) 56,585 baht was donated to the Job & Maria Scholarship Fund and the account now has sufficient funds to support all our scholarship students through college.

3) 330: 11 bulletin boards were moved 6 times to 5 locations around the school thanks to Khun Yok and her B&G crew, and Khun Kwang in the activities office. Thank you, 330 times, for helping with the set-up with cheerfulness and grace.

4) 44 enthusiastic volunteers gave generously of their time and skills to ensure the success of the event (see names below). My infinite thanks to this amazing team!

5) 13 deserving Thai students have received scholarships over the years to pursue their dreams. 9 students remain in the program and continue to work hard to reach their academic goals.

6) 10 years + thousands of participants + over a million baht donated = lives changed & dreams brought within reach.

But success is measured in more than numbers. See the post-race bulletin boards at the front of school to see the smiling faces of families, friends, teams, and strangers brought together by a united passion to have a bit of fun, and to DO SOMETHING  to make the world a better place for others.

Karin and Petro Berkhout, Job & Maria’s parents sent us a message on race day. See below.

Petro&Karin Berkhout

My thanks to all who have participated and contributed and supported the Job & Maria Charity Fun Run these past 10 years.

Special thanks to our 2016 Volunteer Team below:

Donations for Ban Tham Hin Border Patrol Police School, Ratchaburi

by : Pongsatorn Kaewngam
pongsatk@isb.ac.th

7th graders are going to Suanphung for their class trip between February 3-5, 2016. They will visit Ban Tham Hin Border Patrol Police School where many students come from a refugee camp. Last year, our students held a fundraiser that resulted in being able to construct mosquito screens and netting for the boarding houses. This year, the trip will again have a service learning focus where students will help with  planting for the school lunch project and doing action research to determine what  the school needs.

Before the trip, we would like to ask you to contribute as you able by donating money, usable sport equipments, stationery, and educational books (especially those in Thai). You may contribute by dropping off your donations during MS lunch break at the school canteen or MS office from Monday, January 25 to Wednesday, January 27, 2016.
