New Tutoring Policy at ISB

Tutoring at ISB: An update on current procedures and practices

Last year, initial changes were made to our procedures and practices as they relate to Tutoring of ISB students.  In line with our new Child Safeguarding Policy, additional changes have been made, forming the ISB Tutoring Policy.

The biggest change reflected in this policy is that we will no longer allow tutors on campus who are not vetted through the school and that the hours and locations for tutoring have altered.

Who is able to tutor on ISB campus?

  • ISB Faculty & Staff members

  • ISB Substitute Teachers.

  • Those approved through various ISB programs such as CAO program can provide private lessons (e.g Instrumental Music Program, Gymnastics, Tennis etc.), Mother Tongue program etc.

When can tutoring take place?

  • After school from 3:05 to 5:00 for ISB faculty and staff members

  • After school from 2:15 to 5:00 for non-ISB faculty and staff members

Where can tutoring occur? (Following locations only)

  • Main Library (until 4:30 pm)

  • MS/HS Cafeteria

  • ES Learning Hub (until 3:30pm)

  • ES Quads

  • Music Practice Rooms booked through Instrumental Music Program (IMP) coordinated by CAO (Only for music lessons)

What has not changed is our commitment to meet the learning needs of students by utilizing various learning support structures in place at school.  Recommendation for tutoring is only considered after in-school learning support structures are exhausted and after consultation with the appropriate counselor and/or the Student Support Team (SST).

Parents who employ tutors do so at their own risk and are strongly advised to conduct interviews, and request recommendations. Parents should also ensure that tutoring occurs in locations approved by ISB where both tutor and child are visible to others (ISB Cafeteria, Main Library, ES Quads and ES Hub).

Parents who have questions about changes to our policy about tutoring ISB students on ISB campus are asked to contact division Vice-Principals/Dean of Students Diana Drummond dianad@isb.ac.th  (ES), Tico Oms ticoo@isb.ac.th  (MS) or Andy Vaughan andyv@isb.ac.th  (HS).

New Website and ParentPortal

by Chad Bates
chadb@isb.ac.th

We have just launched a new school website- please click here for a preview. This new website is cleaner with more streamlined content, and high quality images showing the best of ISB. The website is designed to be intuitive and easy for users to navigate, with responsive design adjusting depending on the device the browser is using.

In redeveloping ISB’s web presence, the current Parent Portal has been embedded directly in Powerschool. Therefore, starting 2nd semester, parents will need to login to Powerschool to view our ‘closed’ section of the website, this is for current parents only. In this area, along with grades and attendance, you will also be able to access school news and events, as well as updating your family contact and address information.

If you have forgotten your username or password, there is a link on the Powerschool page to retrieve it, alternatively you can contact:

Bangkok All-Stars U12 Team Wins Championship at Singapore International Tournament!

The Bangkok All-Stars U12 travel baseball team won its first tournament of the season at the annual Singapore Turkey international tournament, held each year over the Thanksgiving holidays.  Eight teams competed in the U12 age group, from countries including Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines and Hong Kong.  The All-Stars finished the group stage with a record of 2 wins and 1 tie to earn the #1 seed.  A victory over The Hit Factory Singapore in its first playoff game, followed by another win over the Japanese team from Singapore in the semi-finals, set up the championship final vs. ILAM from the Philippines.  The ILAM team took a 2-1 lead in the first inning, but Bangkok’s ace pitcher, Justin Blumenthal, came in and shut down ILAM, allowing no more runs and only two hits over the last 5 innings.  Meanwhile, the All-Stars got some key hits and runs batted in from Milan Pant, Justin and Reece Emery, to power the offense.  Hiroki Saito anchored the defense with solid infield play, helping the All-Stars to win the championship game by a final score of 8-2.  All the kids on the roster had meaningful contributions towards the team’s success over the 4 day tournament, so it was very much a total team effort!

The Bangkok All-Stars U12 team took 11 players to Singapore:  Justin Blumenthal, Oliver Ellison, Reece Emery, Keane Kidwell, Will Melhorn, Matthew Minckler, Milan Pant, Hiroki Saito, Jake Shain, David Werner and Cole Westerman.

Bangkok All-Stars U14 Baseball Team Scores 59 Runs in Route to the Silver Medal

The Bangkok All-Stars U14 travelling baseball team competed against five teams from Singapore and Indonesia in the annual Turkey Tournament. The team got off to a quick start with a thunderous 18 hits in the opening 25-0 win, setting the stage for the weekend. Kaden Bernhard, Ryan Minckler, and Kane Kidwell routinely hit towering blasts that awed their coaches, teammates, and the crowd. A combined 52 hits in the round robin stage resulted in a 4-1 record that pushed the All-Stars into the championship game against rivals Hit Factory. The thrilling final had all the elements of a great battle. Bangkok crushed pitch after pitch from the opposing ace. When the game turned in favor of the Hit Factory, Andrew Smith took the mound and halted their progress. Ultimately, Adam Ducharme’s big day was not enough to topple the home team with a final score of 7-6.

The Bangkok All-Stars U14 team took 11 players to Singapore:  Adam Ducharme, Andrew Smith, Calvin Mitchell, Connor McGregor, Jon Jon March, Julian John, Kaden Bernhard, Kane Kidwell, Max Lopez, Nathan Blumberg, and Ryan Minckler.

The All-Stars will next play host to its own international tournament, The Christmas Classic from 19-21 December at ISB, before traveling to Manila for the Goodwill Games tournament from 8-10 January.  Come out and support the team if you’re around!
