Later Starts Decision

Over the last two years the Board of Trustees and the ISB Leadership Team have been investigating the possibility of starting the school day later for one or more divisions.

After a very careful review, we have decided to delay any potential later starts for students for at least two years. The data we have collected from surveys last year, during our summer school trial, and our one-day trial earlier this month, show no clear mandate for change from our community – there are many in favor and many against a change in start and end times. We have also learned through narrative comments and communications with students, parents, and teachers, that a change to a later time could pose significant inconvenience for some.

We know that starting school later will be beneficial to adolescents – we are simply hampered by traffic and logistics at the moment. Even though we have not been able to make a change at this stage, the research and the thinking have been helpful and we will continue to explore options for any potential future change in two or three years time.

We would like to thank our community for the cooperation shown with respect to trials and survey completion.
