FCD (Freedom from Chemical Dependency) Visit
Andy Vaughan
andyv@isb.ac.th
On Monday to Thursday next week, November 16-19, a visiting consultant from the Freedom from Chemical Dependency (FCD) organization will meet with students in grades 9 to 12.

The sessions will focus on the health risks of alcohol and substance use on the developing teenage brain, possible long term addiction problems tied to early use, social norms and the misconceptions about teenage behavior, and strategies for maintaining healthy choices.

Grade 9’s will meet in Freshman Seminar on Monday and Tuesday. For Grade 10-12 there will be a number of drop in possibilities for students throughout Monday until Thursday and each class will meet after school (Monday -Sophomore, Tuesday – Juniors, Wednesday – Seniors).

As part of this visit Stephanie Kootsikas from FCD will also give a parent presentation on Wednesday morning, 9.30-10.15am in MPB 3, immediately following the Child Safeguarding presentation that will be held at 8am in MPB 1. All parents are welcome, however this presentation will have a High School Focus and will also have counselor’s, administration and a health teacher present.

For any questions, please contact Andy Vaughan.

GCW Payment Update
Andy Vaughan
andyv@isb.ac.th
This past Tuesday was the deadline for GCW payments.  We will be following up on all missing payments next week. It is useful to share that the costs of GCW courses are based on travel expenses, charges by the organizing companies, lodging and food costs, and often other factors. For each course, there are different circumstances ranging from companies that have single, all-inclusive charges to trips on which each facet requires individual payments.

ISB does not retain any money on GCW courses, so estimated costs for parents are based solely on the charges the course requires.  In cases where costs run under budget there is always a refund to parents. We always try to find the best costs possible, however, it is important to note that we first prioritize safety. The companies we use ensure first aid trained guides, safe equipment, and high standard experiences, hence these improvements and commitment to safety standards in recent years have an effect on overall costs of trips.

Over the past few years, ISB has also greatly enhanced our safety and risk management procedures for each individual trip including vetting trip providers, working with various safety personnel in the region, and providing additional training for our teachers. In the HS PTA meeting on January 2

H.S. Counseling News
Kevin Davy

Grade 9
This week our freshman had a seminar session that addressed healthy decisions surrounding drugs and alcohol. Topics that were discussed were alcohol and its effect on the adolescent brain, risk factors surrounding substance use, refusal techniques, and scenario conversation. This session should lead nicely into a session provided by a global non-profit substance abuse prevention organization (Freedom from Chemical Dependency) that will be working with our students next week.

Grade 10
The 10th graders completed their third sophomore seminar this past Thursday.  They now have a record of their personal strengths and a “Holland Code” that gives them information about what people like themselves tend to do for a living.  (You can find more information about Holland Codes and employment at

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holland_Codes  )

In our next Sophomore Seminar we’ll start putting things together to see what courses might be the best fit for 11th grade for our students.  Hopefully, it will be courses that the students like and are good at!

Grade 11
Grade 11: Large university fair this weekend with many countries represented at Siam Paragon. The OCSC International Education Expo 2015 will be held on Saturday and Sunday, November 14 and 15 from 12:00-6:00pm at the Royal Paragon Hall, 5th Floor, Siam Paragon.  Universities from around the world will be in attendance.  ISB will not provide transportation to this event.  You can pre-register and find a list of attending universities at the following link:

https://www.ocscexpo.net/

As students attend university fairs, they are strongly encouraged to meet and make contact with the university representatives. Many universities track a student’s demonstrated interest in a university. Students are also encouraged to continue meeting with university representatives of universities of which they are interested when they visit ISB.

For those planning ahead, we will have Junior Seminar 2 on Thursday, Nov. 26 where the focus of the session will be on facts to consider when researching universities. On Thursday, January 21, the HS Counselors will host a Grade 11 Parent Night, where we will discuss the university application process.

Grade 12
It’s been a bit of a quiet week as Seniors gear up for the end of the semester. For those students applying to universities between now and January, transcript requests are due. The final date (Monday, November 23) to request school documents for universities with deadlines in December/January is one week away.

Canadian and Hong Kong Applicants – Share the application ID # after submitting your application with the counselor.

US and UK Applicants – Review essays with counselors BEFORE submitting your application.

ALL December/January Applicants

  • Send standardized test scores (SAT, ACT, TOEFL, IELTS) before the application deadline.
  • Schedule an appointment in advance with their counselor to submit applications.
  • Send multiple applications at a time. In other words, plan to send more than one application in one appointment with the counselor.
  • Remember to bring a credit card. Submitting online with the counselor requires students to make a payment.
  • Remember that essays must be the student’s work, not the work of others. Seniors are encourage to share these in advance with their counselor. Counselors view these through the lense of what a university admission officer might see.
