Counseling News

An article we came across this week addresses quite a concern that parents sometimes share in regards to their son (mostly) or daughter “gaming” excessively. The article specifically focuses on teen boys and suggests 10 agreements to strike a healthy balance in relation to life with game systems. Here is the link:

This week in Freshman Seminar our class of 2019 had 2 sessions. The first session included 3 activities reflecting upon personal character strengths that were identified through the completion of a VIA assessment last week. The second session involved the introduction of Naviance. This is an online tool used for educational resources such as inventories, career exploration, and university research and application. Once students created their account they proceeded to complete a learning style inventory. From this they added to their personal portfolio their results / report, discussed points of interest and strategies to potentially use in their future learning.

Next Thursday, November 12, will be the third Sophomore Seminar.  (This is changed from the school calendar date of November 19.)  We will do the “Career Interest Profiler”, which is a survey based on research by careers guru John Holland.  The results will show students what people with similar interests and abilities as theirs, tend to do for their careers.  After this seminar students can begin to put together the information that we’ve generated in the first three sophomore seminars, and see what kinds of subjects they might like to study in order to eventually work in a field in which they’ll be both successful, and happy!

For Seniors applying to the US, UK, Canada, and Hong Kong (or any other university with an online application), students should:

  1. Schedule an appointment in advancewith their counselor to submit applications. Leave some space/time just in case there are issues needing attention prior to the application deadline. DO NOT submit an application without the counselor present.
  2. Send multiple applications at a time. In other words, plan to send more than one application in one appointment with the counselor.
  3. Remember to bring a credit card. Submitting online with the counselor requires students to make a payment.
  4. Remember that essays must be the student’s work, not the work of others. Seniors are encourage to share these in advance with their counselor. Counselors view these through the lense of what a university admission officer might see.
  5. Ensure application and essays are complete when meeting with the counselor to submit. Questions about essays, activities, etc. should be addressed prior to this appointment.
  6. Make copies of application items before submitting just in case anything goes missing in the process.

Following these guidelines will make the process go as smoothly as possible. So far, those who have been applying early have been doing a good job with the above items. As always if you have questions, please let us know. A general timeline can also be found here: https://sites.google.com/a/isb.ac.th/isb-hs-university-advising/timeline.
