It was great to see so many high school parents at the recent Greater Good Science Center workshop. If you weren’t able to attend, the presentation will be shared shortly.

Take a moment to read and article from The Atlantic about high school students and stress. You may see this in your student hence the common theme below to find time to relax over the holiday.

We wish everyone a safe and happy October holiday and encourage students to find time to relax and recharge during the October Break.

Grade 12 – Next week will be a great time for Seniors to catch their breath a bit after what’s been a very full 2 months of school. With the October 15 UCAS application deadline behind us, the focus is now on US Early Decision/Action application deadlines on November 1 and 15. It’s been great working with students as they write and revise their personal statements and essays! Students submitting applications by November 1 are reminded to schedule an appointment in advance with their counselor to have their application reviewed and submitted.

Grade 11 – Grade 11 Students took the PSAT on Wednesday. Results should be available in December. This PSAT is the redesigned version in preparation for the redesigned SAT that will begin in May 2015.

Grade 10 – Now that we are heading into the well-deserved break, make sure that your sons and daughters get some quality downtime and recharge their batteries.  10 hours of sleep a night is something many of our students dream of; hopefully they’ll get it regularly during the break.  Research is showing that extended time in front of a computer screen can increase stress levels, even if the activity is exciting/enjoyable for a person.  Get your son or daughter outside a bit and enjoy the (relatively) cool weather!  What book is your son/daughter reading? How about you?  There’s a conversation starter!

Grade 9 – This week has been a busy week for freshman with many summative assessments and assignments coming to a forefront. Our freshman have started to develop personal self management systems and this busy period has been a good test of preparation and organization . Freshman are reminded  that if they are having difficulty balancing everyday high school life, then they are encouraged to visit with their counselor, Mr. Davy. Ninth graders are asked to relax during the October break, maybe pick up a fun read and enjoy family and friends. Freshman seminar sessions will resume again after the break when we will start to explore personal character strengths.
