Middle School eNews – 14 August 2015

Off to a Great Start

Wow! It has been so great having the faculty and students back on campus. Now we feel like a school again!

All around the school we saw smiling faces as students and teachers met up again and introduced them to our new community members. We ended it with a terrific assembly today, where I shared the message of looking out for one another and balancing working hard with having fun.

At the assembly, Mr. Oms, with the help of our teachers, led the grades and then the whole Middle School through a roller coaster ride – because Middle School is like a roller coaster!

Enjoy the videos here.

It’s going to be a great year!

Requesting Administrator Access to your child’s laptop

Greetings,

Middle School student laptops this year will be issued with a student login that is set as “Standard User”, meaning students will not have access to install programs. We setup the machines this way so we can better maintain and monitor the laptops.

We do realize however many parents want to be able install printers or better monitor their child. If you would like a “Parent” administrator account on the computer, please click here.
Sincerely,

Chad Bates
IT Director

NEWS FROM THE MIDDLE SCHOOL COUNSELING OFFICE

New Student Orientation

What a wonderful day we had for the ambassador training and new student orientation.
We would like to give a big “THANK YOU!” to all the ambassadors for their time and commitment to all the new students at ISB. We would also like to give a very warm welcome to our new students and their families and thank them for coming to new student orientation and welcome wai.

Early in the morning the student ambassadors from grade 7-8 had training with the school counselors. During this time they learned what makes a great ambassador and how they can continue their role throughout the year. Our student ambassadors learned how to welcome their new students and families, how to be supportive and warm to new students and to take responsibility for the new members of our school community.

(Some photos of the event)

We were out front at the panther bright and early to welcome all the new students and their families to help them sign in and make their way to the Chevron Theater. At the Chevron Theater our Middle School Principal, Mr. Dennis Harter gave all the families a warm welcome and introduced the middle school team. The new students then accompanied the ambassadors and counselors to participate in activities to help them make new friends, become familiar with ISB routines and get ready for their first day of school.

We hope the student found the day fun, informative and helpful. We look forward to getting to know all our students and families over the course of the school year.

We were also pleased to welcome back as new middle schoolers all our returning students. It was a pleasure to see how many came to the afternoon session and to see their enthusiasm for their transition to middle school. Once again our school ambassadors assisted in answering their many questions and welcoming them to the middle school.

We take this opportunity to remind you that should you have any concerns about your child’s transition into ISB please feel free to contact the school counseling center.

Second trip is a tough challenging trip deep into a national park. We will work with park rangers from Thaplan National park to record and study wildlife. This trip is a month away, on Sept 11-13, so it would be good to sign up soon.

Third trip is in November and includes kayaking and rock climbing. Details to come after trip 1 and 2 are completed.

Full details are here:
Trip 1: Tree Planting
Trip 2: Working with Wildlife!

MS and HS students are invited on a first come first serve basis. However, since this is happening soon, signing up asap is important.

Thank you.

Middle School Sports

ISB School Sports are about to begin! What is offered? Where are the tryouts?

Welcome back everyone, as you know one of the most exciting things about ISB is how many activities are offered. There is so much it can get a bit overwhelming and confusing at times since different groups offer different sports. For example, ISB has many community activities that are organized through the Communities Activities Office (CAO) and I am sure Mr. Bob Connor will send out more information on that.

However, I am here to inform you about sports for the school teams. This is done through the Athletics Office. These teams will compete in BISAC against other International schools in Bangkok at the age groups of U11, U13, U15, JV, and Varsity. Depending on your age and talent MS students can possibly qualify for all of these teams except varsity.

U11/U13/U15 Assistant AD: Kerry Dyke kerryd@isb.ac.th

The sports offered in Season 1 are:

  • U11
    • Basketball
    • Cross Country*
  • U13
    • Basketball
    • Cross Country
    • Tennis
  • U15
    • Basketball
    • Cross Country*
    • Rugby (boys)
    • Touch Rugby (girls)
  • JV (U19)
    • Cross Country
    • Soccer
    • Volleyball

Our website is under major reconstruction and isn’t ready to be shared yet. However, here are the important links you need to know for now:

full tryout schedule (when, where, etc)

Age Policy (how do I know which age group I qualify for? Can I tryout for more than one age group?)

Map of sports facilities.

Code of Conduct (important for parents and athletes)

Good luck to all students during your tryouts.

Sincerely,

Kerry Dyke
