Access on Campus – Week #2 for Test of Pedestrian Access with Temporary Barriers

by Usa Somboon & Rick Nelson
usomboon@isb.ac.th
rickn@isb.ac.th

Dear ISB Community Members,

Thanks to all of our community for your patience and assistance as we test out the use of barrier and entrance points of the school.  During our first week, we greatly appreciate all who had ISB ID badges visible for our security guards and administrators.

If you are in need of a new lanyard or plastic card covering please go to the main reception desk of the Administration building (admissions).  If you have lost your ID, please contact our ISB Security Manager, at
ratthavi@isb.ac.th to arrange for a new ID.

Please note that during the second week of our trial (starting Monday 1 June 2015), anyone without an ISB ID will be asked at the entrance points to go to the security guard desk near the Admin Building and pick-up a temporary ID card for the day.   Please also note that you must have a photo ID to exchange for the ISB ID card.

As a final reminder, please wear your ISB ID badge whenever on campus.  ID requirements will be checked at all ISB entrance points, including entrances near the administration building, Chevron Theater, New Sports Complex and Sarawan gate.

The temporary barriers will be removed on the weekend of 6/7 June.
Please note that we may reposition the barriers from time to time to test new options.

We will be shortly be reviewing what we have learned from our barrier trial and deciding next steps. Community suggestions are very welcome – please click
here if you would like to leave a comment or suggestion.

Health Letter for Returning Students

by Sonja ROBACK
sonjar@isb.ac.th

The purpose of this communication is to inform you of updates to ISB’s Health Requirements which will require your action and to provide you with the health form for returning students in the 2015-16 school year.

As we look ahead to the next school year, we want to give families ample time to plan for health appointments and allow for the Health Clinic staff to perform any necessary follow up. In addition, we want to highlight some minor changes to the health form requirements for this year.

For the 2015-2016 school year, all returning students are required to have a complete physical examination that includes:

1)   Overall health assessment

2)   Hearing and vision screening

3)   Cardiac evaluation with ECG – Required only for students entering Gr 6, 9, and 11

Annual physicals are an excellent opportunity to provide benchmarks regarding your child’s overall health and to create a picture of progress and development over time.  This information enables early detection of emerging issues, a review of immunization status, and the opportunity to inform the school of any changes related to recent illness or injury.  For the upcoming school year, a change has been made to limit the ECG requirement for only those students entering Grades 6, 9 and 11. This allows for an age-appropriate assessment of health while increasing efficiency in the administration of student health information. These changes were made in consultation with local pediatric health professionals and health resources in the ISB community.

Action required:

All returning students are required to complete and submit the Comprehensive Physical Examination Report Form by June 30, 2015.  Please follow up with your local healthcare provider, a healthcare provider in your home country or take advantage of established ISB Student Packages at either World Medical Center or Bumrungrad International Hospital. When making the appointment, please indicate that the appointment is for the ISB Comprehensive Physical for an existing student.  In addition, please bring the Comprehensive Physical Exam form and the student ID (if available) in order to receive the established package pricing.  Price details are listed below.

Please submit the completed Comprehensive Physical Examination Report Form to the ISB Nurse’s Office in person or via email (nurse@isb.ac.th) by June 30, 2015.

ISB is committed to your child’s overall development, both educationally and health related.  Should you have any questions regarding either ISB’s health requirements or the forms, please contact the Health Clinic, or the Health Consultant, Sonja Roback.

It’s Hot Outside! Taking Care in Extreme Heat

It’s Hot Outside! Taking Care in Extreme Heat

Information on Heat Illness from the ISB Health Clinic

Heat related illnesses include a range of conditions including heat rash, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and most serious, heat stroke, which can be a life-threatening condition. These conditions are caused by a combination of high temperatures, fluid loss and a loss of salts in the body. In Thailand, we have ample exposure to high temperatures and humidity but this acclimatization does not equal immunity to heat illness.

We want to give you information on early warning signs, which indicate that the body is having difficulty cooling itself. Preparation and planning for high temperatures and humidity, paired with early recognition of symptoms, are important steps in keeping you and your family safe.

Why is it important for the ISB to promote awareness of heat illness?

At ISB, students and adults participate in many activities and classes held outside. These events and activities occur year round, and temperatures and humidity at this time of year begin to climb into high risk zones. According to the American National Federation of High School Associations, “exertional heat stroke is the leading cause of preventable death in high school athletics.”  This highlights the importance for students, athletes, parents and carers to be aware of prevention strategies, and know how to respond when someone exhibits signs of the body having difficulty cooling itself.

How can I tell the difference between normal heat response and heat illness?

The body’s normal response to heat and humidity is sweating. As temperatures and humidity increase, and if activity is strenuous such as in exercise or athletic events, sweating alone may not be adequate to sufficiently cool the body.  In addition, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) highlights certain groups of people who are at higher risk of developing heat illness including the elderly, infants and children younger than 4, people with chronic or recent illness or on certain medications. Become familiar with the symptoms of heat illness below.

Signs and symptoms of heat-related illness:

  • Heat Rash: small, red bumps on skin, itching, discomfort, “prickly” type of pain
  • Heat Cramps: earliest sign of heat illness, painful, involuntary spasm of muscles
  • Heat Exhaustion: heavy sweating, rapid pulse, fatigue, weakness, cold, clammy skin, pale appearance, nausea or vomiting
  • Heat Stroke: confusion, high body temperature, skin is hot, red, moist or dry, strong and rapid pulse, loss of consciousness

What preventive steps can I take to protect myself and my family from heat related illnesses?

The CDC recommends the following:

  • Wear sun protection
  • Wear clothing that is light in color and fits loosely
  • Drink plenty of fluids. For most exercising athletes, water is appropriate and sufficient though electrolyte drinks may be advisable for some, especially with increased exertion and duration. Avoid caffeine, energy drinks and alcohol.
  • Time activities to avoid intense heat and direct sun
  • Break up time in the heat with time in cool, air-conditioned buildings
  • Pay attention to the weather forecast and heat advisory warnings

Remember: The most important action in staying safe in the heat is prevention followed by early recognition of heat illness symptoms. Find more information from the CDC on Heat Illness here.

The complete ISB Heat Management Guidelines can be accessed here and also on the ISB Athletics page of the Parent Portal. ISB is committed to your child’s overall development, both educationally and health related. Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact your healthcare provider or the (nurse@isb.ac.th).

Now, six months on, many of those fledgeling ideas have been transformed into published novels, and on May 26th a Celebration and Book Launch was held in the Hub to recognise the impressive achievements of these young student authors.

Top Flight Summer Flight School at ISB June 15-26, 2015

by Community Activities Office
punnanuw@isb.ac.th

Dear Parents and Students,

We would like to invite you to our Top Flight Summer Flight School at ISB June 15-19, June 22-26, from 9:30-14:30
This year the Top Flight Staff has designed a very special camp program for our students.

We will utilize a specially tailored basketball specific program that focuses on our campers coordination, flexibility, agility, and speed to make our players better basketball players and better overall athletes.

This year we are very excited to once again welcome our special NBA guest coach, Raman Sposato. Coach Sposato has just completed his first season as an assistant coach in The NBA Development League where his team, The Santa Cruz  Warriors, won their first NBDL Championship.  Before joining the Warriors coaching staff, Coach Sposato served as lead assistant of player development for the Los Angeles Clippers organization, where he worked very closely with NBA superstars Chris Paul, and Blake Griffin.  Coach Sposato has also worked for many years as coach at the NIKE Snow Valley basketball school in Santa Barbara California, one of the best youth camps in America. We are very excited to have a coach of this caliber taking part in this years camp, his  background at the highest levels of the game specializing in player development will be great for our kids.

Dont worry, as always, there will still be plenty of time for fun at camp, we will organize fun games and special contests at camp to keep our kids engaged and enjoying themselves.

Camp is open to Boys and Girls ages 5-17 of any skill level or experience. Our coaching staff will separate students by age, skill level, and in some cases gender in order to ensure that each student has an enjoyable and memorable experience.

*There will be a “Pro Training” division strictly for Elite team players and players who have demonstrated an advanced skill set 14-18 years of age. These players will have the opportunity to work exclusively with Coach Sposato in his advanced skill clinics.
Our professional, passionate, and positive coaches will help your child become a better player and a more inspired athlete. Camp provides the perfect opportunity to improve skills, make new friends and smile a lot.

The camp registration fee is 7,000 baht for one week, 13,500 for two weeks, and 20,000 for 3 weeks.  There is 10% family discount for any family registering 2 students or more. (Daily drop-in rate 1,600 baht) The registration fee includes lunch and a light snack everyday.
