Access on Campus – Test of Pedestrian Access with Temporary Barriers

by Usa Somboon & Rick Nelson
usomboon@isb.ac.th  &  rickn@isb.ac.th

Dear ISB Community Members,

Earlier this semester, ISB engaged experts from the US to conduct a security audit of ISB. One of the major recommendations is that ISB consider installing a barrier in front of school (with access points) to enable our guards to better screen who enters the school campus.

To help us assess the system, we will be conducting some tests from May 25th to June 5th.

During this time, we will be putting up temporary fencing on the arrival/departure sidewalk at the front of the school.  Three opening points will be in place for community members to pass through.  Entry points will be located near the entryway to the Elementary Building, near the administration building/zig-zag path and by the Chevron Theater.

As we test the system, we would ask that all community members wear their ISB ID Cards each day. Students will be allowed to enter without an ID as per usual.

From 25 – 29 May: we will be testing the pedestrian flow as students, staff, parents and others enter the school. We will give reminders about the need for IDs to enter campus.

From 1-5 June: we will be requiring IDs from all adults that enter the ISB campus.

We would ask that community members who enter at the New Sports Complex or back gate (Sarawan gate) have their ID available to show the security guard at the gate.  We will also have guards or administrators at the side service road to check for IDs for vehicles that park adjacent to the Chevron Theater (HS)

As a reminder, campus rules state that an official ISB ID must be worn by all community members and visitors while on campus.  Community members who have lost or need an ISB ID, must contact the ISB Security Manager at  ratthavi@isb.ac.th to arrange for a new ID or pick-up a visitor ID at the main gate security house.

Please note that we may change the configuration of the barriers as we test the pedestrian flow. If the trial works well, we will look at the feasibility of some permanent barriers during the next school year.

We appreciate the open nature of our campus and enjoy having students and community members using our facilities after school and at weekends. The intent is to continue this but to better protect our students by establishing more robust campus screening mechanisms.

We appreciate the patience and understanding of the community as we work to enhance our safety and security practices on campus.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.

Sincerely,

Usa Somboon (usomboon@isb.ac.th)

Health Letter for Returning Students

by Sonja ROBACK
sonjar@isb.ac.th

The purpose of this communication is to inform you of updates to ISB’s Health Requirements which will require your action and to provide you with the health form for returning students in the 2015-16 school year.

As we look ahead to the next school year, we want to give families ample time to plan for health appointments and allow for the Health Clinic staff to perform any necessary follow up. In addition, we want to highlight some minor changes to the health form requirements for this year.

For the 2015-2016 school year, all returning students are required to have a complete physical examination that includes:

1)   Overall health assessment

2)   Hearing and vision screening

3)   Cardiac evaluation with ECG – Required only for students entering Gr 6, 9, and 11

Annual physicals are an excellent opportunity to provide benchmarks regarding your child’s overall health and to create a picture of progress and development over time.  This information enables early detection of emerging issues, a review of immunization status, and the opportunity to inform the school of any changes related to recent illness or injury.  For the upcoming school year, a change has been made to limit the ECG requirement for only those students entering Grades 6, 9 and 11. This allows for an age-appropriate assessment of health while increasing efficiency in the administration of student health information. These changes were made in consultation with local pediatric health professionals and health resources in the ISB community.

Action required:

All returning students are required to complete and submit the Comprehensive Physical Examination Report Form by June 30, 2015.  Please follow up with your local healthcare provider, a healthcare provider in your home country or take advantage of established ISB Student Packages at either World Medical Center or Bumrungrad International Hospital. When making the appointment, please indicate that the appointment is for the ISB Comprehensive Physical for an existing student.  In addition, please bring the Comprehensive Physical Exam form and the student ID (if available) in order to receive the established package pricing.  Price details are listed below.

Please submit the completed Comprehensive Physical Examination Report Form to the ISB Nurse’s Office in person or via email (nurse@isb.ac.th) by June 30, 2015.

ISB is committed to your child’s overall development, both educationally and health related.  Should you have any questions regarding either ISB’s health requirements or the forms, please contact the Health Clinic, or the Health Consultant, Sonja Roback.

Assessment

by Graeme SCOTT
graemes@isb.ac.th

This year we will not be sending paper copies of MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) and ISA (International Schools Assessment) assessments.  Instead, both assessments will be uploaded to Powerschool and will be available from Monday 25th May.  To access these assessments, go to powerschool.isb.ac.th and log in with your username and password.  To open the document use the password in red on the screen once you login.  If you experience difficulty with logging in, please contact our Ed Tech department at vinitp@isb.ac.th  or trins@isb.ac.th

Please remember that we use many different types of assessments to measure student progress.  MAP and ISA are two popular and well researched external assessments but they are broad in nature, they only assess some elements of what students learn here and they are done in different conditions to those the students normally learn in.

Only students in grades 3-9 take the MAP assessment and those in grades 3, 5, 7 and 10 take the ISA assessment.
