Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon @ the Holiday Inn Bangkok Silom – May 6th

Each year ISB’s administration hosts a Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon for the many, many parents who spend countless hours helping to make our school a better place for our students. Whether you’ve donated one hour or hundreds of hours, this luncheon is for you.

This year’s luncheon will take place on May 6th from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at the Holiday Inn Bangkok Silom. We will be providing a number of vans to take parents from ISB to the luncheon departing at 10:00 am and returning to ISB at the conclusion of the event. After School Native Language Coordinator

Dear ISB Community,

We are advertising for the new position of “After School Native Language Coordinator” to begin in August 2015 (please see position description below). Our aim is to better serve the needs of our various community language groups and provide coordination, guidance, facilities and resources for language learning to take place after school. As we build the program, we expect this position to grow in the number of hours demanded and in the scope of the work. Interested candidates from the ISB community should submit applications to Bob Connor by 6 May, 2015.

After School Native Language Coordinator (Part Time)

Position Description

Core Responsibilities:

  • Liaise with language community groups
  • Facilitate hiring of teachers
  • Establish class groups and schedules (pretesting)
  • Assist with researching and purchasing of learning resources (online, Rosetta Stone, books, etc)
  • Liaise with ISB’s Government Liaison Office with respect to visas
  • Work with ISB’s Safety Manager with respect to background checks
  • Maintain records of attendance
  • Establish whether the target language is the native language
  • Establish salary and tuition fees in conjunction with language community groups
  • Collect tuition fees from parents and maintain thorough records
  • Explore qualifications from national systems
  • Monitor quality of instruction and learning
  • Arrange for parent education about the importance of maintaining a mother tongue
  • Liaise with HS Dean of Academics with respect to the IB

Core Competencies & Attitudes

  • Understand language learning
  • Be culturally aware and globally minded
  • Be positive, pro-active, reliable and collaborative
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills
  • Have strong organizational skills
  • Have abundant energy and stamina for the role
  • Proficiency in written and oral English with good communications skills
  • Preference may be given to candidates with teaching qualifications and prior experience

Reporting Relationship

The After School Native Language Coordinator reports to the Community Activities Office Coordinator

Application Procedure

Candidates should apply in writing to Mr. Bob Connor (Community Activities Office Coordinator) at bobc@isb.ac.th no later than 6th May 2015. Candidates should submit the following information in the format requested:

  • A letter of application, no longer than two pages, explaining your strengths as a candidate and why you are interested in this particular position
  • A current resume not to exceed two pages
  • A list of references including current email addresses and phone numbers
  • A maximum of three letters of reference (scanned at low resolution) that may already be in your possession.
  • Please scan these documents into a single PDF attachment.

 

5th Grade Book Sale – April 23rd & 24th

Dear Parents,British and Irish and Canadian Combo Social – April 24th

The 5th grade book sale is a yearly sale put on by the 5th graders with the help of the teachers, IAs, and parents.

The Funds raised from this Charity event support the Mercy Center in Klong Toey and pays for the education for many underprivileged kids who cannot afford education. Last year they raised close to B200,000.00. This year we, of course, would like to beat that amount.

Please start sending books and/or complete board games to school with your child. The book boxes are located around the school. You may also drop them in 5th grade work room. (small room at the top of the stairs in the 5th grade quad).

Last Chance to Register for the 16th Colgate Kids Triathlon

The race will take place on Coronation Day, Tuesday, May 5th (ISB holiday) at 7:30AM starting at the two ISB pools.   Registration and other information can be found at https://inside.isb.ac.th/cao/2011/08/16/colgate-kids-triathlon/.  Please note that new race maps will be posted by the end of this week.  There are significant changes to many of the courses.

The fee per participant is THB 500 and all participants must provide a volunteer to help on race day or pay a THB 2,000 fee if they can’t provide a volunteer.

It’s shaping up to be an incredible event!  Again this year the triathletes will receive timing chips to wear around their ankles for accurate time and distance recording.  The Relay Race will again allow relay teams in each age division (based upon the oldest participant in the relay team), so athletes can form teams of three people to participate together.  One of the relay team members can be a teacher or other adult this year.

The distances this year will be:

• 5-6 year old : 50m swim, 600km bike, 500m run
• 7-8 year old:100m swim, 2.5 km bike, 800m run
• 9-10 year old: 150m swim, 4.5 km bike, 1.0 km run
• 11-12 year old:200m swim, 4.5 km bike, 1.7 km run
• 13-14 year old:250m swim, 6.8 km bike, 2.4 km run
• 15+ year old :350m swim, 9.1 km bike, 3.1 km run

Registration will close on Monday, April 27th or when 210 athletes have registered, whichever comes first.  So please register now to avoid disappointment.

Please note that all participants must provide their own bike and bike helmet.

Last Booster Meeting of the year!  Please join us on April 27 at 11:00 a.m. in the MPB2 for the last meeting of the school year.  This is a particularly important meeting because we are voting on Executive positions for the 2015-2016 school year.  Plan to attend if you are able.

High School Spring Drama Production – April 29th & 30th

Come and enjoy the zany and fast paced comedy, ZAP.  Performances are in the CCT Wednesday, April 29th at 3:00 and Thursday, April 30th at 6:30. This play contains adult subject matter that is not suitable for all ages. Individuals under the age of 11 years old must be accompanied by an adult. The performance runs 90 minutes without intermission.

 

Girl Scouts Collecting Used Instruments & School Supplies

This week, we will all be amazed and entertained by Kofi as he brings his Western African music to ISB.  Students ranging from Pre-K through 12th grade will all be impacted by this learning and cultural opportunity!  The Girl Scouts in Troop 40005 want to help the students at Kofi’s Nunya School by donating instruments and school supplies to the his students.  If you have an unused trumpet, triangle or grand piano we would love to help you donate it!  Please contact Andrea Modlin (littlemodlin@yahoo.com) or at 089.897.2324 to arrange for pick-up.  Any and all school supplies with life in them are also welcome!   Cash donations are also most welcome!  Alternate donation point is at the Choir Concert on Thursday evening.  Donations accepted through May 1.

Learn to Swim Instructor Training
Looking for people from our parent community interested in becoming an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor.
We offer four 6 week swimming lesson sessions throughout the school year (stipend positions). These sessions run after school.
The training will consist of a Friday-Sunday weekend course.
Course date will decided depending on student availability.

“Welcome to ISB….”  WELCOME WAI 2015-2016

In preparation for the next school year, the Welcome Wai team is looking to put together a list of willing parents who can share school information with new families to help them acclimate. There are many roles available from attending the coffees to welcome, to compiling the information packets, being a school specific contact (ES / MS / HS) or a welcoming country representative

The initial point of contact will be the Welcome Wai Coordinators along with PTA School (ES, MS& HS­) and Country / Community Representatives.

This is a very simple volunteer role but key to providing a welcome to new parents. Is this something you would like to be involved with? If yes, please let us know as soon as you can. If you have been a volunteer this year and would like to continue into the next school year please be sure to let us know. Thank you for considering this opportunity.
