Message from the Principal
Philip Bradley
philipb@isb.ac.th
Dear Parents
Our last week in school before the break has been busy and included a wonderful student celebration of Songkran, sponsored by the Thai Club. Students performed a water pouring ceremony offering blessings and good health to faculty and the community as a whole. The water pouring is symbolic of washing away the old, fresh starts and the New Year – something we all acknowledge as very meaningful. There were also cultural presentations from other students groups – a multicultural assembly indeed.
Thursday morning, our third season athletes: track & field, softball, badminton and golf have all traveled to other IASAS schools and tonight members of our choir head to New York, safe travels and good luck to all.
I wish you all a peaceful Songkran and hope you have some quiet family time and that students return refreshed and rested.
School opens again on Monday April 20th.

Dear Parents,
Happy Songkran! May you and your family enjoy the much deserved break.
Grade 12 – After Songkran, Seniors will have only 2 weeks left until their study leave begins. Seniors must let their counselor know of their university application decisions. If they need help looking at options and making decisions, counselors are more than happy to help! Remember that students can only deposit to ONE university (no double deposits). If a student is waitlisted at a university and still wants to be considered for a place should one become available, they should speak with their counselor about this. Most UK applicants should have decisions by now. They should pay close attention to deadlines for indicating their firm and insurance choices.
Please mark your calendars for Thursday, April 30 at 8:30am in the MPB#1. Counselors invite you to attend the Grade 12 Parent Transition Meeting. This will be a good opportunity to look at preparing your son or daughter for the realities of transitioning to university as well as a chance for you to prepare for your own transition and adjustment. We look forward to seeing you! Please RSVP here.
Once IB exams are finished, Seniors are invited to a Senior Transition Day on Monday, May 25 from 7:20-2:05. A variety of activities and sessions are planned to help students as they begin to focus on their post high school transition.
Grade 11 – It’s a busy time in the school year with Junior Conferences, preparing for exams, and standardized tests. During the upcoming Songkran break we encourage students to take time to relax and recharge so they are ready for the final push to the end of the school year!
Grade 10 – We talk a lot about healthy, active, balanced lifestyles at ISB, but sometimes we get a little too ambitious about all the things we want to accomplish. Slow down during the Songkran break, enjoy some down time, have a long face to face chat with a friend, watch a good movie, read a book about your favorite thing, and enjoy a meal with your entire family. Time flies – enjoy the moment!
Grade 9 – 9th graders are asked for this coming Songkran Holiday to relax, have fun, and do whatever you do to “just be”!!!
Announcement for parents of current Grade 10 and 11 students – Your 10th and 11th graders were sent an email by the counselors on Wednesdayletting them know about a summer science program through Mahidol University. The Institute of Molecular Biosciences offers a Student Science Training Program for high school students who want to advance their scientific knowledge and skills in molecular biology. During the two week course (June 15-26) students will learn key scientific concepts and basic techniques in molecular biology with hands-on experience in the laboratory.
For additional information, including the application for the program, please have your son or daughter speak with Khun Mai in the counseling office.

Earth Week Bulletin 2015 – Cafeteria News…Did You Know…?
Michelle Mueller Ihrig
cafeteria@isb.ac.th
Earth Week welcomes us back to school after Songkran commencing April 20. The Cafeteria plays a large role in this week, this year by raising awareness of meat production and its impact on the environment, specifically in the case of beef. A little food for thought on this matter as taken from an excerpt from TIME and The Guardian respectively:
“You may think you live on a planet, but really you live on a gigantic farm, one occasionally broken up by cities, forests and the oceans. Some 40% of the world’s land surface is used for the purposes of keeping all 7 billion of us fed. The vast majority of that land — about 30% of the word’s total ice-free surface — is used not to raise grains, fruits and vegetables that are directly fed to human beings, but to support the chickens, pigs and cattle that we eventually eat.” (TIME 12/2013)
Out of all the meats produced, beef has the largest impact on our environment. “Beef’s environmental impact dwarfs that of other meat including chicken and pork, new research reveals, with one expert saying that eating less red meat would be a better way for people to cut carbon emissions than giving up their cars. The heavy impact on the environment of meat production was known but the research shows a new scale and scope of damage, particularly for beef. The popular red meat requires 28 times more land to produce than pork or chicken, 11 times more water and results in five times more climate-warming emissions. When compared to staples like potatoes, wheat, and rice, the impact of beef per calorie is even more extreme, requiring 160 times more land and producing 11 times more greenhouse gases.” (The Guardian 7/2014)
The entire Earth Week at the Cafeteria will be an ISB ‘Meatless Monday’ with reduced offerings of meat at each section, thereby featuring some tasty, new vegetarian alternatives. Our aim is simply to invoke some mindfulness about meats and their impact on the environment, especially when it comes to beef.
Enjoy.
