Required Student Medical Screening due by August 13, 2014

by Usa Somboon
usomboon@isb.ac.th

Dear ISB Community,

The purpose of this communication is to inform you of a change in ISB’s Safety & Wellness Program which will require your action.

As you are aware, ISB has taken many positive steps this year to enhance the safety and wellness of our student population.  These enhancements touch all aspects of student healthcare:

1)   Facilities & Equipment

a.     Mobile emergency unit (Ambulance) on premises, equipped with the most up-to-date medical equipment.

2)   Healthcare Staff & Training

a.     Hired part time Healthcare Consultant

b.     Hired full time Safety & Security Coordinator

c.      Hired an additional School Nurse

d.     Trained many of our ISB Staff in CPR and First Aid

3)   Processes

a.     Implemented a new Health & Wellness Process for new student admissions.  Thereby ensuring 100% of incoming student meet the required ISB standards

b.     Implemented a new Student Athlete Process which required 100% of Student Athletes to have a physical examination (including ECG Screen) prior to participation is sporting activities

c.      Requiring enhanced Health Screenings of our current student population

As we look to the 2014-2015 school year, we will require all returning students to have a complete physical examination that includes:

1)   Overall health assessment

2)   Hearing and vision screening

3)   Cardiac evaluation (including ECG screen) – Required for Grades 5-12

Annual physicals are an excellent opportunity to provide benchmarks regarding your child’s overall health.  This long-term history provides physicians a complete record of your child’s progress and development over time.  This information enables early detection of emerging issues, as well as being informed of any changes related to recent illnesses or injuries.  The physical examination also serves as a great opportunity to discuss immunization needs.

Action required:

All returning students are required to have the Comprehensive Physical Examination Report Form (Select Link) completed by the start of next school year.  We suggest that you either follow up with your home country physician or take advantage of ISB established packages at either World Medical Center or Bumrungrad International Hospital.

You may call World Medical Center at 02-836-9999 or Bumrungrad Hospital at 02-667-1555 to schedule an appointment.  When making the appointment, please make sure to indicate that this is for the ISB Comprehensive Physical for an Existing Student.  In addition, please provide grade and date of birth of the student and remember to bring the Comprehensive Physical form and the student ID (if you have ID) to the appointment so that you may receive the established package pricing.  Grades Kindergarten through 4thgrade (without ECG) price for the physical exam is approximately 1500 baht at both hospitals and the price of physical for grades 5 through 12 (with ECG) is roughly 1700 baht at World Medical Center and 2000 baht at Bumrungrad.  If however, an abnormal finding requires that your child have further testing and evaluation by a specialist, there may be additional cost incurred. Please submit the completed Comprehensive Physical Examination Report Form to the ISB Nurse’s Office in person or via email (nurse@isb.ac.th) by August 13, 2014.

ISB is committed to your child’s overall development, both educationally and health related.  Should you have any questions about either ISB’s Health & Wellness Program or the required Comprehensive Physical Form, please contact Kristin Simpson, ISB Health Consultant at kristins@isb.ac.th.

Sincerely,

Usa Somboon                         Kristin Simpson                                 Dr. Andrew Davies

Headmistress                         Nurse Consultant                              Head of School

Note:  This screening will also serve as your Physical requirement should you choose to participate in Middle School or High School athletics.

Important Message from ISB’s Safety Manager – ISB ID Cards

by Rick NELSON
rickn@isb.ac.th

One way that ISB is addressing the topic of campus safety and security is to require the use of official ISB identification cards whenever on campus.  Please be aware that our security guards’ check for ISB ID cards at all entrance gates. All ISB faculty, staff, parents and family support members (drivers, mae bahns, etc.) must visibly wear their ISB Card when on campus.   Any visitor wishing to come on campus (vendors, friends and relatives, etc.) must come through the front entrance gate to register and attain an official ISB visitor card from our ISB security guards.  A valid photo ID must be provided to the security guards.  This ID will be exchanged for the ISB visitor card and must be visibly worn throughout the visit.

Thank you for your assistance and support, as we continue to strive for a safe and nurturing learning environment for all of our students.

Note from the Community Activities Office (CAO)

by Justin Wah
justinw@isb.ac.th

Dear ISB Parents and Students,

Welcome to the International School Bangkok!

As you will find out very soon, ISB is a busy place.  We at the Community Activities Office (CAO) offer a wide variety of activities for students to participate in when the school day is finished.

Please go to our website https://inside.isb.ac.th/cao/ to get an idea of what’s on offer and how to register.  Please be aware that there are also Elementary After School Activities and ISB Athletics (BISAC and IASAS) which differ from our CAO offerings.  Yes a bit confusing, this document (click here) should help give you a basic understanding of CAO, ESASA’s, ISB Athletics.

One very important piece of information regarding CAO groups.  We do NOT provide transportation for students.  So please take this into account when registering your children.  For those of you that live in and around Nichada, this shouldn’t be a problem, but for those of you that live downtown and want to participate, you will have to arrange your own transport.

We will have a CAO Information day on August 16th from 9am-12 noon in the MPB.  This will give you the opportunity to ask questions, register and pay for activities.  If you cannot make this day please don’t worry, all registration can be done on-line through the CAO website, and payments can be made at the CAO MondayFriday 7am-3pm (located next to the nurse’s office and bookstore).

I hope you all have a great start to the school year…..!

Regards,

Justin Wah
Community Activities Office Coordinator.

Natural Turf Fields Closed

Andy Vaughan
andyv@isb.ac.th

Due to a delay in our summer maintenance program for ISB’s natural turf grass fields, we have had to extend the period that our natural grass fields are closed. Fields A, B, C and E are all consequentially closed until the opening of school. All fields are sign posted as closed and guards have been informed to ask any community members accessing the fields to move to the artificial turf, Field D.

We request that all community members remain off the fields until August 13 when school opens.

Many thanks for your cooperation.

Adult Football/Soccer at ISB – Pick-up Games Every Sunday

by Tim Meisburger
tim.meisburger@asiafoundation.org

adult football

Why should you have all the stress and the kids have all the fun?

Every Sunday at 4:00 pm we have a two hour pick-up soccer game for adult members of the Nichada/ISB community at ISB. It’s a fun game with players of all abilities and ranging in age from twenties to 50s, and at least one guy in his early 60s (!). There are no set teams, so the sides each week are pretty balanced, making for competitive but friendly games.

We play all year, and usually 11-a-side when we have enough players. If not we will have a small-sided game with available players. The games are organized by the Nichada Panthers Football Club, and in addition to the Sunday casual game, we have regular mid-week evening games during the school year against invited opposition. These are formal games complete with officials and uniforms, offering a higher level of competition for more experienced and energetic players. Sunday games are free and open to the community. To participate in formal games requires membership in the club and a small fee to cover the cost of the referees.

If it sounds like fun, come out and have a look on any Sunday at 4:00. We normally play on the main field, but during the summer the fields are under maintenance so we could be on any of the other fields at ISB. To find out which one we will be on please visit our Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/NichadaAdultSoccer (or just Google Nichada Panthers). If you want to play, please bring a white shirt and a black shirt (to facilitate forming teams) and your shoes.

See you there!
