She also has a Masters of Human Nutrition, and is a registered nutritionist with the Nutrition Society of Australia. ISB Book Awards
Over the past three weeks, students in the ES have been selecting commonly loved books to earn our ISB ES Book Award for 2014. These books all reflect the “caring global citizens” part of our ISB Mission statement. One title for each grade level has been selected from the nominations. On Monday, we will celebrate these books and unveil the titles. Stop by our ES HUB to enjoy the books and our “AWARD WINNING” decorations.
As part of our ISB Book Celebration, students may dress up as a “caring global citizen” book character on their out-of-uniform day next Thursday or Friday. They can choose to dress like any favorite book character who exemplifies the idea of being a caring, global citizen. Please note that toy weapons and any other props that would distract from learning are not allowed. Students who choose to dress up are encouraged to come to the HUB with the book that inspired their costume and take a photo in the Red Carpet Photo Booth.

Our final session of swimming will begin on Thursday, May 8. If your child’s class is part of this session you will receive a detailed letter explaining our swim program in your child’s Friday folder that will go home on Friday, May 2. So please be on the lookout for this!

Parent Training Follow-up: Exploring Word Study
Thanks to all of the parents who attended the April 3rd parent workshop on Word Study. If you are interested in accessing the keynote, you can do so here. You can support your child’s word study efforts by giving them time to practice some of the sorting activities listed. Lastly, parents have asked for high frequency or sight word lists. In the elementary, we use Fry Words. Fry words are specifically taught in grades KG through 2. However, students who are struggling in reading or writing can benefit from extra practice of reading and writing these words in all grade levels.

Cafeteria News…Did You Know…?
…About Broccoli? It is a veritable goldmine of nutrition, offering a wide range of anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits. In fact, it packs one of the most nutritional punches of any vegetable! Health organizations recommend that we eat broccoli several times a week as part of a balanced diet. Let’s take a glance at some its’ riches: Vitamin C – a strong antioxidant which boosts our immune system; Vitamin A – helps maintain healthy skin and fight off infectious disease; Potassium – promotes optimal brain functioning and a healthy nervous system; Magnesium and Calcium – building strong teeth & bones; Folic Acid – aids in cancer prevention; High in Fiber – supports our digestive system; Flavonoid kaempferol – an anti-inflammatory that helps fight against cancer and heart disease. I often hear the younger kids say it looks like a ‘tree’. It could in fact be dubbed ‘the tree of life’. Good news that broccoli is available most every day in both cafeterias, either on the main menu or at the salad bar. Enjoy!
