Heat Guidelines for Programs at ISB
by Rick Nelson
ISB Safety Consultant
rickn@isb.ac.th
ISB is implementing new guidelines to assist with preventing heat illness for children and adults. As the guidelines are put in place, we are asking faculty, staff, parents and students to work together to prevent the signs and symptoms of heat illness. To assist with this process, ISB will be monitoring closely the temperature and humidity closely through the Humidex Index. This data will be collected from our onsite ISB weather station. As the index readings climb to higher levels, a series of prevention methods will be applied to minimize the risk associated with heat illness. When the Humidex rises to over 40 degrees Celsius, steps may include moving locations of activities or cancelling activities if the index is at dangerous levels. This could include athletic and afterschool activities, PE classes and recess periods.
Avoiding heat illness starts with good prevention. Heat illness is when a person’s natural cooling system begins to fail, allowing internal heat to build up to dangerous levels. Heat illness progresses from symptoms associated with heat cramps, to heat exhaustion, and in it’s most severe form, heat stroke. Heat stroke is a life-threatening emergency and requires immediate medical assistance. To avoid any of these forms of heat illness, encourage your children and each other, to follow smart preventive strategies in the heat and humidity. Here are just a few strategies:
- Avoid dehydration by drinking plenty of water (cool, not cold) before physical activities or being outdoors. Avoid caffeine and high sugar, carbonated drinks.
- During activities, drink cool water and increase the number and length of rest breaks.
- Make sure your diet contains an adequate amount of salt.
- Take breaks in the shade or out of the heat environment.
- Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitted clothing. Shade the head and back of the neck to decrease heat gain from the sun. Wear a hat with a brim or carry an umbrella.
- Protect from sun exposure, use a sunscreen (SPF 15 or higher). Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going out, and reapply frequently.
- Wear sunglasses with 100% UV protection.
- Take extra precautions playing on concrete or asphalt.
- Acclimatize to the heat. It takes approximately 10 days to two weeks for your body to acclimate to high levels of heat and humidity. When returning from cooler climates, readjust to the tropical environment by gradually increasing your time and exercise in the outdoors.
- Keep an eye out for each other. Know the signs and symptoms of heat illness and assist others when you see any of the signs. To learn more, go the Center for Disease Control and Prevention website on Emergency Preparedness and Response for Extreme Heat – go to
https://www.bt.cdc.gov/disasters/extremeheat/faq.asp
- Keep a very close eye on young children (under 4 years of age) and adults over 65 years of age, as these groups are most at risk and vulnerable to heat illness and extreme heat conditions.

Live and magical theatre performances coming up: a timely reminder!
by Kerri Fitzgerald
kerrif@isb.ac.th
Theatres have a very defined etiquette and it is probably timely to remind the whole ISB community of some established norms of theatre audience behaviour that we abide by.
Many of the rules about overcrowding come from the aspect of safety: eg the audience can never sit in the aisles or stand around the sides and back in a theatre. This is considered a fire/safety hazard.
Please be seated on time and fill in the centre of the rows first. Late comers disrupt the audience’s theatre experience.
Young children are encouraged to attend (but it might be wise to leave those under the age of two with a carer), and there are bathrooms to be used at interval. It is very distracting to both performers and audience members when there are people wandering around the theatre.
No cell phones are to be bought into the theatre with the exception of the house manager and director. Even though we have very high quality radio mics, the frequency can be disturbed by cell phones. There have been numerous instances of radio mic interference in the past which is devastating to the performers concerned. Try to leave your phone at home
There will be publicity photos to download afterwards and so there is no need for photos to be taken during the show. The show will also be recorded and the DVD will be available in the library within 24 hours. Please enjoy the magic and immediacy of theatre performance without filtering it through a device
Lastly a reminder that no food is allowed in the theatre – only water.
The performers thank you in advance for supporting their efforts. If everyone abides by these norms we can all enjoy the show.
Chess tournament – April 26th
by Kerri Fitzgerald
kerrif@isb.ac.th
This Saturday, April 26th, a HS chess team of 6 players will play in an invitational online Chess tournament involving some of the IASAS schools. President Anuka King and sponsor Neil Lewin are to be thanked for their efforts in getting the team ready. An outside coach provided extra tuition as this is the first time we have participated in such a tournament. We wish them the best in what will be an intense morning and cross fingers hoping there will not be a power outage!

by Andy Vaughan
Athletic Director
andyv@isb.ac.th
Dear ISB Community,
We have already begun the process for creating the printed and online versions of the ISB Calendar for 2014-15. Due to the many events that occur at ISB this process is quite a complex process and takes place until May where we finalise dates and begin the print process.
As we receive dates they will start to appear on the online calendar that all parents can view at our current website at: https://www.isb.ac.th/Calendar/
***PLEASE NOTE: THESE DATES ARE NOT FINALISED UNTILL LATE MAY***
It is therefore very important that you do not book any holidays or make any plans for any of the dates and events that are appearing until May 29 2014, which is the date that we anticipate sending the calendar to print.
If you have any events that you are in charge of please forward your preferred date to the appropriate person as listed below by May 5, 2014.
ES: Diana Drummond
MS: Moe Baron Toaldo
