ISB Weather Station – Update v.2
Philip Bradley
philipb@isb.ac.th
If you visit ISB’s remote weather station you will notice a few changes. A slight modification in the graphics and the addition of wind gust data in addition to average wind speed. The main page now contains links to a number of other useful sites:
Air quality data presented graphically for Thailand and Asia
Satellite images showing/mapping water vapour and cloud cover coverage over Thailand and the Western Pacific
What better way to start the day than talking about the weather!

Parent-Teacher Conferences
Peter Roback /Phil Rogers
peterro@isb.ac.th, philr@isb.ac.th
Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held from 7:20 – 3:00 on March 14 in Rajendra Hall. This will be an important time to discuss the semester two progress of your child(ren) with teachers and counselors.
Also during this day we strongly encourage students and their parents to carefully consider course selection for next year. During parent teacher conferences there is the opportunity to talk to teachers, counselors and administrators about course selections. This is relevant to all students but particularly to students moving from Grade 10 to 11 as they have to make a greater number of decisions.
With this in mind it is strongly recommend that both parents and students attend the conferences together and come with two outcomes, current progress and future course choices.
2014-15 Course Selections
Phil Rogers
philr@isb.ac.th
Course Registration is fast approaching and planning ahead is important to having a successful high school career. REmember that registrations will occur from 19th March and details about how to do this through Powerschool will be sent out next week.
Critically please ensure that family discussions are taking place about appropriate choices for next year. Making informed and well thought out choices that consider perspectives of counselors, teachers and families will always outweigh rushed or decisions based on perception.
Please consult the new High School Program of Studies which provides information about each of the courses that are offered and relevant information about graduation requirements and the IB Diploma and individual IB Courses.
Thanks

ISB has positive relationships with many universities around the world. For those trusting relationships to continue, ISB counselors work diligently to advise students using ethical standards and practices. In the past several years, universities have become increasingly aware of fraudulent applications being submitted by applicants from Thailand. ISB took quick and decisive actions to protect our students by changing the application process for ISB applicants. The feedback we are receiving from universities has been very supportive. Recently, Fortune Magazine published an article detailing the concerns by many universities regarding this issue. Please see the full article at the below link:

Grade 9
Mr. Davy is continuing small group conferences with the grade 9 students to look at their four-year plan and discuss course selection for next year. Be sure to ask your child what courses he/she plans on taking next year.
Grade 10
The next Sophomore Seminar #4 will be on March 10/11. The counselors will be having individual conferences with each student to discuss course selection for next year. Each student will have a form listing the courses discussed with the counselor. Be sure to talk with you child about his/her plans for grades 11 and 12. Is the full IB diploma the right choice for him/her? Are there courses which are necessary for admissions to the major he/she is considering?
Grade 11
Junior Conferences should be completed by 13 March!!! Quite a few juniors have not set the appointment with their counselor. Please ask your child if he/she still needs to complete the work and turn it in to Khun Vannee in the High School Counseling Office. Once that is done, the student can then make the appointment for their Junior Conference with the counselor and his/her parents. The days are running out! All Junior Conferences should be completed before Parent Teacher Conferences!
If you have not registered for a parent account on Naviance, you can still do so. Ask your child for the registration code that was given to him/her at the beginning of the year. You can also, contact your child’s counselor to receive the code to activate your account. You will learn more about Naviance during the Junior Conference.
University Lab started on Monday, 3 March, and will be open each Monday for 6 weeks from 2:15-3:00 in room 203. Juniors are encouraged to come to the session to work on their university research. A counselor will be present to support their research and answer questions.
Grade 12
Application results are coming in! As of Thursday, 153 seniors have processed applications to colleges and universities. 120 students have received one or more acceptances for a total of 253 offers of admissions. Way to go Seniors!! Please remind your child to come by to see their counselor about their application decisions so we can keep track of them. Also, encourage your child to thank the teachers who wrote a letter of recommendation for him/her!

Athletic Scholarships Information Session this Monday and U90 Soccer ID Camp Postponed
Andy Vaughan
andyv@isb.ac.th
This coming Monday, March 10 we will be hosting Nick Terzis the director of American Athletics Scholarships Pty Ltd who will run two free information sessions on U.S. Sports Scholarships. The first session will be offered at 10am in the MPB and the second at 6.30pm. Information can be found at this link: https://goo.gl/PHG8uh
We encourage any parents to attend who are interested in gaining a deeper understanding of possible athletic scholarship opportunities in the U.S.
The Upper 90 College college soccer ID camp sessions that were to be run this weekend have been postponed until March 29/30. This session will have a college scout present to ID any soccer players who may have the potential to receive some form of soccer scholarship into U.S. Colleges in the future. Please follow this link: https://goo.gl/ry4bL0 for more information and register for the weekend at this link: https://www.regonline.
Both companies offering these sessions have been involved in placing students in colleges from Asia Pacific. For more information on each company, please contact direct to the organisers displayed on their flyers linked above.
We hope these sessions will help parents and students who are trying to access such future scholarships and welcome any families from Middle or High School to attend these sessions.
A Busy Season Three!
With HS returning from GCW we have been busy over the past two weeks with BISAC weekly games against Shrewsbury and Ruamrudee. This weekend our U17 Softball teams and Badminton teams are competing in invitational tournaments held at Ruamrudee International School and our girls Varsity Softball team will also be participating in the BPS Softball invitational. We hope that these tournaments provide our teams a good chance to gain some game experience early in the season and for our Varsity Softball Girls this helps fill the void created from the cancellation of our Softball Exchange.
Our Varsity Track and Field Team will be competing in our one home meet of the year tonight; the BISAC Senior Invitational Track Meet. This is the second year that we have hosted this meet and with 152 Athletes registered to compete it will be a great evening of Track and Field. The schedule is attached to this announcement if you wish to join us for the evening, which starts at 4.00pm.
Next weekend (14-16 March) our pre-IASAS Track & Field and Badminton Exchanges take place in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. We have attempted to go paperless with information on this exchange and we have to admit that it has not had much success! We will be returning in the future to sending home paper information sheets as well as emailing information. If you are still unsure of details of these trips or have not had information sent to you, please email me immediately and we will forward through information.
We have also begun to offer a different method of payment for our Exchanges and IASAS trips. Parents can now pay directly into a designated ISB account held at Siam Commercial Bank instead of sending cash with your child. We’ve had great feedback on this so far and it is very likely that next year we will no longer accept cash in the office, but only deposits direct into this account. Please let us know your feedback on this process over then next two months as we trial this for the exchanges and IASAS payments.
We wish all our teams the best for their tournaments this weekend, Go Panthers!!

Cafeteria News… Did You Know…?

…That the most awaited Smoothie Month of the Year has arrived!! Welcome back to Yellow Mango Madness!! There are actually some blessings that come along as the scorching hot season commences. One of the best is the naturally ripe, sweet fruit we can savor at this time. This would include the ‘King of Fruits’, the yellow mango. We’re whipping up fresh Mango smoothies such as our Mango Madness, Mango Strawberry Kiss and Mango Blueberry Bang (the last two made with yoghurt), and are also serving Mango with Sticky Rice, starting in March at the Grind. The health benefits of Mango are so numerous, this blurb is not able to do them fair justice. However, we will just have to mention a few: Mangoes are rich in antioxidants and alkalizing properties which help combat cancer causing agents and inflammation, contain high levels of fiber and vitamin C which lower cholesterol and boost the immune system, and are high in vitamin A which improves vision. For further good news on Mango, we invite you to take your own journey into the wonders of this fruit. Welcome Mango Mania! Enjoy!

NBBL Scorekeeping/Timekeeping opportunity for students in Grades 7-12
Kevin Sypolt
kevinjan@optonline.net
As we have in past years, NBBL (North Bangkok Basketball League) will hire Grade 7-12 students to be scorekeepers and timekeepers for NBBL games. The games will take place on mostly on Saturdays at the ISB gyms. This is a great opportunity for Grade 7-12 students to earn their own money and learn the responsibility of a work situation. The students will earn between THB 200 and 300 per game.. In order for the students to be eligible to work at these games, all students (including those who have been scorekeepers/timekeepers in the past) must register at https://docs.google.com/
There is a MANDATORY training session for any student who did not work as a scorekeeper/timekeeper last season. This training will take place either on Sunday, March 9th at 2:00PM or on Tuesday, March 11th at 7:00PM. Both sessions will take place in the MPB 3 room. Students are only required to attend one of the sessions.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. As always, please consult our NBBL website at https://www.nbbl.asia/ for information. This is where we will post calendar information, schedules, team listings, etc.
Thanks
