SAT prep course at ISB
Stanley Kaplan SAT prep course at ISB

Parents of HS students who are planning to sit for the May SAT test may be interested in a Stanley Kaplan prep course. A couple of parents who would appreciate the convenience of having a course given in Nichada have contacted this company and requested that they run a class for ISB students.

Class is limited to 15 students and will be taught by an American teacher. Lessons are twice per week for 3 hours and will go from March 1st until the week before testing day so the lessons are fresh. Class will meet Saturdays and Sundays from 10am-1pm with a break during Songkran. The cost is approximately 28,000 baht depending on how many students sign up. Families will pay the company directly.

We are looking for serious interest since the class starts soon. If you would like to have your child’s name on the list, please send an email to Laura Shepard at LShep159@aol.com by Friday, February 14th. Students will be enrolled on a “first come first served” basis.

Thank you,
Laura Shepard

Final GCW Preparations
Peter Roback
peterro@isb.ac.th

With only one week of classes remaining before Global Citizenship Week, please make sure your child is prepared for their course.  Teachers have supplied packing lists and itineraries for planning purposes.  Take time to visit course Haiku sites which contain itineraries, contact information, course objectives, and much more .  Please double check that passports have 6 months validity and all necessary visas are completed for students leaving the country.

The safety and well-being of students continues to be our top priority.  Our teachers have done extensive work in developing safety plans and taking necessary precautionary measures.  We are also continually monitoring the political situation in Bangkok to ensure the safety of our local courses.  Some changes to itineraries have been made and secondary plans developed in the event that conditions quickly change.  We have also developed systems to reach all groups in case urgent communication is needed.

Final GCW group meetings will be held on Tuesday, February 11 from 1:40-2:05pm.  Parents are invited to attend.  Ask your child for meeting room location.

Counseling Center News
Debbie McDowell
debbiem@isb.ac.th

The semester is well underway. Please encourage your child to see his/her counselor if there are any issues in which they need assistance.  It’s a good time to check in Powerschool to see if all assignments and work has been turned it. It would be a positive step for all students to make sure they are caught up next week as we lead into our Global Citizenship Week in which all students, teachers and counselors will be off campus on amazing learning experiences.

Grade 9
Mr. Davy is starting his individual conferences with the grade 9 students to look at their four year plan and start the discussion about course selection for next year.

Grade 10
Sophomore Seminar #3 will be held on Monday, 10 February, and Thursday, 13 February.  Students will attend during their free period or during Flex on Monday if they don’t have a free period.  Sophomores have already received an email about their assigned period.  This Seminar will pull together the information from Seminar #1 and #2. The focus is on career research and course selection for next year.

Grade 11
Last week was the deadline for all Junior Assignments to be turned in.  Some Juniors still need to complete the work and turn it in to Khun Vannee in the High School Counseling Office.  Once that is done, the student can then make the appointment for their Junior Conference with the counselor and his/her parents.

Last Thursday was the Junior Parent presentation. Thanks to all of those who attended. We had a great turn out, especially given the unrest in Bangkok. If you were not able to attend, a copy of the power point can be accessed here:  https://inside.isb.ac.th/hscounseling/

If you have registered for an account on Naviance, you can still do so. Ask your child for the registration code that was given to him/her at the beginning of the year.  You can also, contact your child’s counselor to receive the code to activate your account.  You will learn more about Naviance during the Junior Conference.

Junior Conferences are underway.  Please check with your child to see if your time has been scheduled. This is a very important session with the counselor to discuss course selection for next year and university application process.

Grade 12
It is important to encourage your child to maintain his/her motivation throughout this semester.  The last semester of high school still counts and students should remain engaged and productive!

Many students who have applied to university have already received acceptances!  As of today, 150 seniors have processed applications to colleges and universities. 85 students have received one or more acceptances for a total of 172 offers of admissions. Way to go Seniors!!

University Visits
The unrest in Bangkok has resulted in many universities canceling their visit to Thailand.  We hope that upon our return from GCW we will have many university representatives on campus again. In the meantime, there are three fairs that will be taking place downtown:

Education USA Fair (Feb 8) 10:30 -16:30 @ Renaissance Hotel. Limited number of tickets available. Register at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/educationusa-fair-bangkok-2014-tickets-10042414131?aff=eorg

AEO US College Tour (Feb 22) Athenee Hotel Ballroom from 12:30 to 4:00pm.

Linden Tour (Feb 22) Four Seasons Hotel (155 Rajadamri Road) 1:00-4:00 pm.

Parents are welcome to attend these events.

Please regularly check Naviance for the most up to date information about university visits on campus.

IASAS CULTURAL CONVENTION (CC)
Kerri Fitzgerald
kerrif@isb.ac.th

IASAS CULTURAL CONVENTION (CC) is coming up (March 6- 8 th) and involves over 70 HS students plus staff. This year CC Music will be held at ISKL, Art, Dance and Drama are traveling to Jakarta (JIS), Forensics and Debate will be hosted in Taipei at TAS.

At ISB we will hold CC showcases so that you can all catch a glimpse of our amazing artists and orators before they travel away on March 5th.  It’s like our very own mini Arts Festival!

From February 24 – March 3 we are hoping that the CC Art  exhibition of the 25 pieces chosen to be taken to Jakarta will go on display in the Main Library. This will depend on the length of time the framing process takes.

On both February 26th and 27th starting at 2:30 pm  in the HS Choir Room, CC music delegates will perform some of their challenging and beautiful pieces. Come along and be inspired.

February 26th is also the showcase for Forensics and Debates delegates – in the pit at the Main library from 2:30 pm.

Finally on March 3rd, the CC Dance and Drama  Showcases will be held in the CCT (2 shows – 3:00pm and 5:30pm). The Drama piece will be performed second at the 5:30 performance

Come and be amazed at the wealth of talent at ISB.

Hard to believe, but our High School seniors will graduate in just under 4 months. Graduation is on Friday, June 6th, so mark your calendars.  In preparation, the Graduation Committee is starting to take orders for formal graduation announcements that can be sent to your friends and relatives. For samples please open the attachment and scroll down to the scan copy of the 2013 card.

Orders can be made online from Friday 7th February or in person at the HS cafeteria from 10:00am – 12:00pm on the following dates: Thurs 13th Feb, Thurs 27th Feb, Fri 28th Feb, Thurs 6th March and Thurs 13th March. On Friday 14th March there will be a table set up outside Rajendra Hall throughout the day of HS parent teacher conferences.

Please note that payment is required at the time you are ordering your announcements. No order will be placed until full payment has been made. If you place your order online please come by to pay on one of the above dates.

No orders will be accepted after Monday 17th March. We are working with the printer this year to have the graduation announcements card sets back to parents before Songkran break if possible so there will be more time to mail them to overseas guests.

Don’t wait. Order yours right away so you are not disappointed. You can also go to this google document for the order form.
