Writing Opportunity for MS Students
Dear parents,
Below, please find a writing opportunity for students.
Young Writer’s Award 2014 Announcement
Dear Students,
We are currently organizing the Young Writer’s Award for the current school year 2013/2014. While we are finalizing submission procedures and judges, keep in mind that you will be able to submit up your writing for judging and possible inclusion into the Young Writer’s Award book. This book is published at the end of the school year with the winning submissions.
Details to keep in mind:
1. You may submit if you are a Middle School Student.
2. You may send in up to 3 writing pieces (1000 words or less for each).
3. Any genre/type of writing is acceptable –poems, stories, essays, memoirs, plays, etc.
4. Your writing must have been read and approved by an adult editor (teacher, parent, friend). You will be required to enter the name of your editor on the submission form.
5. Deadline for submission will be April 1, 2014.
6. You submit here: https://inside.isb.ac.th/youngwriters/submit-your-writing/
Remember judges are looking for:
· Clarity of thought
· Creativity and imagination
· Emotion
· Voice
· Evoking a reaction from the reader
· Spelling, grammar and punctuation are always important. Judges are aware that MS students are still learning; and while judges may overlook a few errors that do not impede understanding, it is important that you review and edit thoroughly your writing prior to submission. You must also submit your writing to an adult editor prior to submission; this person could be a teacher at ISB, a parent, or another adult.
AMIS Honor Band/Choir/Strings Students Selected
Please congratulate the following MS music students who were chosen to participate in or were chosen as alternates for AMIS (Association for Music in International Schools) honor festivals in the second semester.
The students worked hard to prepare challenging audition materials and were chosen through a very competitive process.
Special recognition should go to all who auditioned for the festivals. We are very proud of the hard work that went into preparing the audition materials, which brought improvements and learning.

Cafeteria News…Did You Know…?
…Each year around this time, our very own Bakery starts making Christmas cookies, using a traditional German recipe (Muhrbeteig, my Grandmother’s very own in fact!). What makes them unique is that they are not sweet. You just taste simple goodness and hints of butter. We will start selling them after lunch and after school at the Grind on Wednesday Dec 4. They come in a multitude of ways: Individually, bagged in pairs and wrapped seasonally to show your appreciation for a teacher or friend, or order them boxed by the dozen to take home for yourself or to share at a holiday party. Looking to do some cookie decorating your self? Order them without the festive icing and do it your self. All larger orders are required 3 school days in advance. Here’s to making the Holidays special. Enjoy.

Repeat Announcement: Leaving ISB End of This Semester?
If you are leaving or possibly leaving ISB before, or end of this semester, please contact Khun Fon in the MS Office at supanniy@isb.ac.th – she will send you the ISB Withdraw Form that needs to be completed in order for her to get your child’s school records ready for his/her next school.
Repeat Announcement: Chevron Panther Tennis Clinic with Asia’s prominent Tennis Specialist: Dec 14 & 15
For the first time at ISB, the Parent Tennis Committee (PTC), together with Advantage Tennis and supported by Chevron, are organizing a special 2-day tennis clinic by one of Asia’s most accomplished tennis coaches, Randall Scott, who has a 20-yr track record developing champions in Asia. Offering a Wholistic approach to developing young players in tennis, Coach Randall has also been a personal coach to Davis Cup, Grand Slam and Olympic players during their pivotal, development years. He has been a development coach to players with 10 professional titles and 35 international, junior titles.
Coach Randall: “Over the years, many elite junior and senior players I have coached would say to me during their post match discussion — “I lost because I wasn’t playing well”. Tournament tennis is not about waiting to play well to win, it is about learning to win even when you are not playing well. This is the attitude of a player who develops into becoming an effective competitor and peak performer.”
To know more about Coach Randall, please click on this link:
https://www.wholistictennisasia.com/about-randall/
Visiting Coach Simon Tomlinson, from the UK, who also has 20 year’s experience in coaching junior champions in the UK, will assist Coach Randall.
The clinic, to be held on December 14-15, is open to all competitive tennis players at ISB. The fee for each participant, inclusive of lunch, drinks, giveaways and prizes is 4,500 Baht. There will be two sessions each day, each comprising 2.5 hours, so each participant will get 5 hours of training daily. To maximize the effectiveness of the sessions, places will be limited to only 20, so please book a place for your child by December 2. Registrations will be strictly based on a first-come-first-served basis.
To sign up, please email panthertennisisb@gmail.com with the following details:
- · Participant’s name, age, grade and gender
- · Number of years/past & current experience in tennis, if any
You will receive a confirmation email followed by the clinic schedule and relevant details. All payments have to be made at the CAO by Dec 10.
For more information, please feel free to email alinaeddy@gmail.com or sandysmora@hotmail.comof the PTC.
Repeat Announcement: Middle School Father/Son Book Club @ the Library
By Robert Kelly
Contact Email: rkelly2@gmail.com
On behalf of the ISB Main Library and the Friends of the Library group, I would like to invite any middle school grade boys and their fathers to our ISB Father/Son book club held in the main library. The book we will be reading was released in 2010 and is called Ship Breaker by Paolo Bacigalupi. It is a powerful book choice for this age level and equally as powerful for adults. It was nominated for a National Book Award for adolescent literature, and asks what will our world look like when we run out of non-renewable resources? The nature of trust, family, fate and luck form the thematic underpinnings of Ship Breaker’s heady adventures.
Here is the link to the book information on Amazon. It can be ordered in paperback or downloaded on the Kindle or iPad: https://www.amazon.com/Ship-Breaker-Paolo-Bacigalupi/dp/0316056197/ref=tmm_pap_title_0
At this point, the exact date of the evening event is not set, but we are thinking of mid-January after the school holidays. Once I know how many people will be attending, we can move forward with setting a date. The plan will be that fathers and sons read the book at home and then we will gather at school for a casual evening that will include stimulating conversation about the book, as well as refreshments.
If you are interested in joining us, please send me an email at rkelly2@gmail.com, and I can send you more detailed information.
