December Examinations – All students should have received their exam schedules earlier this week. If you have not seen it, please ask your son or daughter.
- December 2013 exams run from Wednesday 11th December to Wednesday 18th December. The full exam schedule can be found on the Parent Portal through this link.
- There are 3 exam sessions each day which have 7:20, 10:10 and 1:00 start times, except for students with accommodations, who have separate schedules. Students should arrive at their exam venues 10 minute early. Students will not be permitted to leave an exam early.
- Student are expected to bring pens, pencils, rulers, erasers, ISB ID card, calculator (if required) and a clear water bottle to each exam.
- Students who do not have an exam on a day may stay at home to study or use our Library for private study.
- Students can leave school early after an exam by completing an exam early departure form which will be posted on the Parent and Student Portals or hard copies available from the HS Office. Students will need to have a parent-signed, completed form for each instance they wish to leave campus.
- Students are expected to take each exam as scheduled. Students who are sick for an exam must contact the HS office immediately. Medical certificates MUST be provided.
- Thursday 19th December and Friday 20th December are exam feedback days where normal attendance is expected. Teachers will look at group and individual feedback, review markschemes and success criteria, look at exemplary answers and develop future goals. School will still finish at 11:30am on the Friday following the HS end of year assembly.
PowerSchool will be closed to student and parent access from 7am on Wednesday 11th December until after the exam period.
Counseling News

Final Exams around the corner:
Although it is difficult to believe, final exams start very soon. All students have received their schedules for the exams so now planning ahead, getting prepared early and feeling confident are the important tasks to help students be relaxed during the exams and are definitely keys to having successful exams. Putting final exam preparation off to the last minute can not only add to student stress but can make the exams less productive in evaluating student knowledge. Any encouragement you can give to help students to start planning their study program early will be helpful.
University Visits next week:
We’re coming towards the end of our universities visits for the Fall Semester and next week, we will only be hosting one university on Monday.
Monday – November 25 at lunch
New York University – Abu Dhabi; this is a branch of NYU which is a separate highly competitive, highly selective liberal arts program. Many full scholarships are awarded to talented students.
This week ISB hosted a very successful Summer Programs Fair for those students who would like to attend summer programs in the US. Some of these programs were for the study of English language and some were academic. A few of the programs also offered activity based programs. Brochures are available in the counseling office. The counselors recommend, of course, that students follow their passions during the summer and enjoy exploring new options and opportunities.
College Spotlight (managed and maintained by parent volunteers!)
Check out the College Spotlight bulletin board – this week the College Spotlight is the University of Virginia.
Freshmen – After they recently took a V.I.A. strengths assessment, Freshmen were given several activities to help optimize their strengths. In addition, there have been activities that foster positive emotions and engagement; these activities focus on ways to maintain and enhance segments of well-being.
Sophomore – With very few exceptions, all of the Sophomore students have completed Sophomore Seminar assignment on their personalities. It is time for them to begin to concentrate on studying for their final exams. They now have their schedule and should begin to consider their study plan.
Juniors – Juniors will be having their second Junior Seminar Flex on November 28th (Tuesday). They will be getting a packet during this session as well as help on how to research universities (world wide) as well as an invitation to you (so don’t forget to ask about it!) to attend the Parent Night.
Seniors – Seniors continue to come in to submit their university applications in a timely manner and the process is going smoothly. Seniors must remember, though, to get as many applications submitted before December 6th as possible, as they don’t want university applications to interfere with their final exams. To be sure that students have as many opportunities to send off their exams as possible, counselors will again be available on specific evenings (5:00 – 8:00pm) by appointment only the week of December 2. Please remember that December 5th, though, is a national holiday and ISB will be closed.
Counselors presented at the PTA Meeting this month: On Thursday’s PTA meeting three counselors made presentations on topics requested by parents. Kevin Davy spoke about the Freshman Seminar beginning of considering career options and then Andy Weiser followed with the Career Exploration in Sophomore Seminars with the use of the PLAN, Personality Inventory, Myers Briggs type questionnaire and the connection with career interest and university search. Cathy Curtis presented a brief look at Merit Based Scholarships.
Counselors spreading the word about ISB
This week, Debbie McDowell, Kevin Callahan and Ryan Haynes will be at the CIS (Council of International Schools) forum representing ISB. Approximately 300 universities coming from all corners of the world attend this forum, which will give our counselors ample opportunities to highlight our ISB students. A few days prior to the CIS forum, Kevin also visited six UK universities.

Chevron Panther Tennis Clinic with Asia’s prominent Tennis Specialist: Dec 14 & 15
Alina Ibrahim-Eddy
alinaeddy@gmail.com
For the first time at ISB, the Parent Tennis Committee (PTC), together with Advantage Tennis and supported by Chevron, are organizing a special 2-day tennis clinic by one of Asia’s most accomplished tennis coaches, Randall Scott, who has a 20-yr track record developing champions in Asia. Offering a wholistic approach to developing young players in tennis, Coach Randall has also been a personal coach to Davis Cup, Grand Slam and Olympic players during their pivotal, development years. He has been a development coach to players with 10 professional titles and 35 international, junior titles.
Coach Randall: “Over the years, many elite junior and senior players I have coached would say to me during their post match discussion — “I lost because I wasn’t playing well”……Tournament tennis is not about waiting to play well to win, it is about learning to win even when you are not playing well. This is the attitude of a player who develops into becoming an effective competitor and peak performer.”
To know more about Coach Randall, please click on this link:
https://www.wholistictennisasia
Coach Randall will be assisted by visiting Coach Simon Tomlinson (CV attached below) from the U.K., who also has 20 years’ experience in coaching junior champions in the U.K.
The clinic, to be held on December 14-15, is open to all competitive tennis players at ISB. The fee for each participant, inclusive of lunch, drinks, giveaways and prizes is 4,500 Baht. There will be two sessions each day, each comprising 2.5 hours, so each participant will get 5 hours of training daily. To maximize the effectiveness of the sessions, places will be limited to only 20, so please book a place for your child by December 2. Registrations will be strictly based on a first-come-first-served basis.
To sign up, please email panthertennisisb@gmail.com with the following details:
- Participant’s name, age, grade and gender
- Number of years/past & current experience in tennis, if any
You will receive a confirmation email followed by the clinic schedule and relevant details. All payments have to be made at the CAO by Dec 10.
For more information, please feel free to email alinaeddy@gmail.com or sandysmora@hotmail.com of the PTC.
