Middle School Father/Son Book Club @ the Library

By Robert Kelly

Contact Email: rkelly2@gmail.com

On behalf of the ISB Main Library and the Friends of the Library group, I would like to invite any middle school grade boys and their fathers to our ISB Father/Son book club held in the main library. The book we will be reading was released in 2010 and is called Ship Breaker by Paolo Bacigalupi. It is a powerful book choice for this age level and equally as powerful for adults. It was nominated for a National Book Award for adolescent literature, and asks what will our world look like when we run out of non-renewable resources? The nature of trust, family, fate and luck form the thematic underpinnings of Ship Breaker’s heady adventures.

Here is the link to the book information on Amazon. It can be ordered in paperback or downloaded on the Kindle or iPad:https://www.amazon.com/Ship-Breaker-Paolo-Bacigalupi/dp/0316056197/ref=tmm_pap_title_0

At this point, the exact date of the evening event is not set, but we are thinking of mid-January after the school holidays. Once I know how many people will be attending, we can move forward with setting a date. The plan will be that fathers and sons read the book at home and then we will gather at school for a casual evening that will include stimulating conversation about the book, as well as refreshments.

If you are interested in joining us, please send me an email at rkelly2@gmail.com, and I can send you more detailed information.

Chickenpox awareness

This week, the Health Office was notified that three students from the ES and MS and one young sibling, were diagnosed with Chickenpox; a contagious disease caused by the Varicella-Zoster virus.  Chickenpox can be serious, especially in babies, adults, and people with weakened immune systems. Chickenpox spreads in the air through coughing or sneezing. It can also be spread by touching or breathing in the virus particles that come from chickenpox blisters. A person with chickenpox can spread the disease from 1 to 2 days before they get the rash until all their chickenpox blisters have formed scabs. The incubation period is 13-17 days.

Please notify school nurse if your child was diagnosed with Chickenpox. The student must stay home from school until the vesicles become dry. The clearance note from doctor is required before returning to school.

The symptoms of chickenpox include fever, malaise, headache followed by a rash that turns into itchy, fluid-filled and pustule blisters that eventually turn into scabs. The rash may first show up on the face, chest, and back, then spreads to rest of the body, including inside the mouth, eyelids, or genital area. It usually takes about one week for all the blisters to become scabs.

The best way to prevent chickenpox is to get the chickenpox vaccine. The chickenpox vaccine is very safe and effective at preventing the disease. Most people who get the vaccine will not get chickenpox. If a vaccinated person does get chickenpox, it is usually mild—with fewer blisters and mild or no fever. The chickenpox vaccine prevents almost all cases of severe disease. If your child has not been vaccinated, two doses of chickenpox vaccine are recommended for best protection.

Repeat Announcement:  Next MS Counselor Connection with Parents on November 19th

We welcome MS parents to join the school counselors on Tuesday, November 19th from 9:00-10:30am in the MS Skybox, 3rd floor.  Coffee and pastries will be provided.  In our Wellness classes this month we are exploring the topics of bullying and building positive relationships.  We will focus November’s Counselor Connection with parents on these same issues, discussing how to spot signs of bullying, what to do if your child is being bullied or bullying others, and how to promote positive relationships at home and in school.

Please RSVP by completing the form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1GnMiQrqDWUmfPN1k3JPqQZiRTbSQhvNkTaNrkfH9jcQ/viewform.  Because we will be facilitating a discussion, we can accommodate the first thirty parents who submit this form.  This survey will close once the spots have been filled.  We hope you can join us.

Repeat Announcement:  Cafeteria News…Did You Know…?

… That we use 100% premium Soybean Oil for all of our cooking.  Why soybean oil?  For several reasons: 1) It contains 0% Trans fats, the kinds of fat that are the worst for you.   2) It has 8% Omega 3 Fatty Acid, a number even higher to that which is in premium Canola oil.  Omega 3 fatty acids are an essential part of our diet and very important for proper brain and muscle functioning.  3) It has a high smoke point, which means it can be heated to high temperatures without breaking down, and is therefore perfect for stir frying, etc.  4) It is made locally allowing us to benefit in two ways a) decreasing our cost and as compared to using an imported item, and b) reducing our carbon footprint on the environment.  5) Last, when compared in nutritional value to more well known imported oils such as Canola or Safflower oil, Soybean oil ranks right alongside them.  Enjoy.
