The Crucible – a show not to be missed!

by Gareth Huxtable
garethh@isb.ac.th

International School Bangkok’s fall play is “The Crucible”, by Arthur Miller.  Tickets go on sale from Wednesday 13th Nov.  Performances are on Thursday Nov 21st at 3pm, Friday Nov 22nd at 3pm and Saturday Nov 23rd at 6pm.

This riveting play details the Salem Witch Hunt trials in 17th Century Puritan America.  Miller’s most famous play explores the theme of hysteria as the tensions in the village of Salem are brought to boiling point.

After being caught dancing in a forest, a group of teenage girls begin to accuse the towns’ people living in Salem of being witches.  When his wife is accused, John Proctor must go to the court and take a stand against authority, unaware that it will be his morals that will come under fiery scrutiny.

Miller’s play published in 1952 is still fiercely relevant in today’s political and media climate, when those that question the certainty of an institution’s values often have to do so at huge personal cost.

This is a powerful play with strong themes.  The target audience would be High School and Middle School.  Older Elementary students could attend at parent’s discretion.

The same production team that last year created “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” is proud this year to direct “The Crucible” for High School.

Tickets go on Sale Next Week from Wednesday Nov 13th in the Cafeteria at HS and MS lunch times.  The performances are in the CCT and there is reserved seating, so book early to avoid disappointment!

Performances are on Thursday Nov 21st at 3pm, Friday Nov 22nd at 3pm and Saturday Nov 23rd at 6pm.

Adults 200 baht, Students 100 Baht.

Hearing and Vision Screening at ISB

by Kristin SIMPSON
kristins@isb.ac.th

Recently the Nursing Clinic with the help of Top Charoen Eye Center conducted Comprehensive Vision and Hearing Screening of our children at ISB. These valuable screenings are free of charge and are held on a yearly basis. Hearing Screenings include Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten and Hearing and Vision screening includes all children in grades 1st, 3rd, 5th and any new students in 1st through grade 8. An Opthamologist and Ear, Nose and Throat Doctor from Top Charoen were also in attendance to assess further any children with identified problems during the screening.

These tests are quite extensive and help to identify those children who may have a visual or a hearing impairment. Impairment in either of these areas may prevent a child from obtaining full benefit from their educational opportunities. Vision and hearing problems often go unnoticed because the defects are often difficult to detect. Without specific screening tests a problem may not be found until your child develops significant educational or medical problems. Hearing and Vision screening enables us to detect unrecognized conditions as early as possible in order to obtain prompt treatment and resolution to any problems.

If your child has an abnormal result of either the Hearing or Vision Screening, a referral letter will be sent home requesting that you schedule a follow up appointment with a specialist to determine if further treatment may be necessary. Thank you in advance for helping us keep the children of ISB healthy and able to realize their full potential in school!

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact kristins@isb.ac.th
