Welcome and Welcome Back
Philip Bradley
philipb@isb.ac.th
As the summer vacation draws to an end and the new school year approaches I know there are mixed feelings amongst our students. From a number of brief encounters and conversations it is evident that students have enjoyed a rich and varied summer of travel, relaxation, adventure, learning, sport and family time. And most said they were looking forward to school, meeting new students and catching up with old friends, some even hinted that they were a bit bored and ready to work! So to our new and returning families and students a very warm welcome or welcome back. A warm welcome too, to the 16 new teachers and administrators who are joining high school this year.
Much hard work and preparation has been going on over the vacation and along with my colleagues I am looking forward to school opening on Tuesday August 13th. It will be the normal start time of 7:20 (arrive at least 10 minutes early) with students meeting in small communication groups (comm groups), followed by a whole school assembly. Comm group locations will be posted in school and this is where important notices, schedules and laptops will be given out. The remainder of the day will involve a series of orientation sessions, an eight period rotation (short periods) and some technology specific meetings.
Reminder to students new to ISB – all grades
There is a new student and parent orientation on Saturday 10th of August.
Please arrive in time to register 8:45-9:00 ready for our first session in the Chevron Theatre.
Reminder to our grade 9 students moving up from ISB middle school (not new to ISB) There is a student orientation at 14:00 on Saturday 10th of August. Meet in the Chevron Theatre.
Sincerely,
Philip Bradley
Message from the Dean of Students
Peter Roback
peterroback@isb.ac.th
The first day of school is this Tuesday, August 13 and we are excited about the coming year!
My name is Pete Roback, and I am the new HS Dean of Students. I am especially thrilled to be joining the ISB community as a new faculty member. I bring over 15 years of teaching, coaching, and administrative experience to ISB from large, public school districts in the US (Minneapolis/Saint Paul, Minnesota). Although I have served in many different capacities, I am especially excited to begin building positive relationships with students – this is where my true passion lies. My wife, Sonja, and I attempt to live active and balanced lifestyles but inevitably follow our two active elementary aged boys, Anders (grade 5) and Dane (grade 2), to a multitude of activities. I will work as hard as possible to provide the best learning program and environment for your student(s). I can’t wait to get started!
Reminders:
Uniforms and Dress Code
ISB gains from the strength of its wonderful community of faculty, students and parents. As you prepare for the start of school, please remember that all students must wear school uniform, which in the High School consists of the white or navy blue ISB collared shirt and one of the following:
• Khaki skirt, shorts, or pants purchased through the ISB bookstore
• Black skirt, shorts or pants purchased through the ISB bookstore
Please note that pants, shorts, or skirts purchased outside of the school may not be worn as a school uniform and ISB PE clothing may not be worn as a substitute for school uniform clothing. Additionally, underwear of any kind should not be visible. This includes the singlet type undershirts, popular with girls in the past few years, and the boxer shorts of boys. Undershirts should not extend out of the uniform shirt at all.
For footwear, students must wear shoes that are comfortable, practical, safe, and do not reflect poorly on ISB. Slippers and flip flop sandals (toe plug or not) are not acceptable school footwear and will not be permitted.
The High School faculty and administration will monitor students’ dress to ensure that it conforms to our expectations. Please help us in ensuring that your student(s) only wear dress code conforming clothing to school. Please reference page 30 of the Student Handbook for additional information.
Bicycle and Motor Scooter Helmets
For personal safety considerations, appropriate bike helmets must be worn (and properly strapped) by both students and adults while on campus. Administrators and security guards will monitor the front gate the first week of school and offer reminders and encouragement. Thank you for helping to support and model a safe environment at ISB!
Transportation
Only students with a valid Thai driver’s license may drive/park a car on campus. Students who are 15 years or older may drive/park a motor scooter on campus provided:
• Student has a Thai driver’s license for his/her age group
• Student obtains a parking permit sticker from the HS Office
• Always wears an appropriate/strapped motorcycle helmet (and only carries passengers with helmets) on and off campus
Golf carts must also be operated safely and be affixed with a parking pass from the Office of the Headmistress.
I look forward to meeting as many students and parents as possible in the coming weeks. Please don’t hesitate to contact me with questions or concerns.
Go Panthers!
Regards,
Pete Roback

Athletics pre-Participation Physical Examinations (PPE’s) at ISB next week.
Andy Vaughan
andyv@isb.ac.th
As part of our safety review that is ongoing at ISB, we have changed our PPE requirements to include all students from grade 6-12 involved in Athletics at ISB and to include increased Heart screening, requiring an EKG as part of the PPE process. Any student wishing to try out for a Varsity, Junior Varsity (U17), U15 or U13 sports team in the upcoming weeks must complete a PPE prior to attending try outs. We also strongly advise that students interested in participating in second or third season sports complete their PPE now.
Next week from Tuesday till Thursday, with a reserve day of Friday, Bumrungrad Hospital will be conducting PPE’s in the MPB 1-3. The total cost for the PPE will be 1000 baht payable on the day. Prior to attending the PPE screening, all athletes must to print out both pages of the PPE form and the medical consent form from Bumrungrad and bring these to the screening.
Page one of the PPE can be found at this link: https://inside.isb.ac.th/athletics/files/2013/08/PPE1.pdf
Page two of the PPE can be found at this link: https://inside.isb.ac.th/athletics/files/2013/06/PPE21.pdf
The medical consent form can be found at this link: https://inside.isb.ac.th/athletics/files/2013/08/General-consent-to-treatment-and-release.pdf
For all students choosing to conduct their Physical with another hospital, this must be completed before they attend try outs. All completed PPE’s must be returned to the Athletics Office, upstairs between the Rajendra and Auxi Gymnasiums.
We are looking forward to another great year of sport here at ISB!
Preparing for Season One Try Outs
Andy Vaughan
andyv@isb.ac.th
With Season One try outs beginning next week on Wednesday for U19 Varsity Teams (Cross Country, Soccer and Volleyball) and U17 JV & U15 tryouts following the week, there are some important tips we have for all returning and new athletes.
Many of you will have returned to ISB after the break without much lead time, therefore you will still be in a period of acclimatisation to the heat of Bangkok. This period usually lasts roughly 10 days as your body becomes accustomed to the heat. Being physically active during this period is a good way to assist this acclimatisation, but also requires you to be more aware of your own body. It is essential that during this period you hydrate well, which starts from the minute you wake. Start the day with a couple of glasses of water to hydrate after sleeping in AC, then ensure you drink lots during the school day before try outs and practices in the afternoon.
Bangkok is the hottest city on average in the world, therefore you need to be aware of how to manage the heat. Heat related illnesses occur when people don’t take adequate rest, don’t hydrate or eat well, don’t have enough sleep and also practice with a current medical condition such as the flu. Here are a few hints of how to adjust well:
• Sleep well in the first weeks of school, aim to get 8 hours per night
• Hydrate all day
• Drink a liter of water in the hour before you train so your body begins training fully hydrated
• Drink electrolytes throughout the training
• Wear a cap to training if outdoors
• Use the misting fans if outdoors and wet your clothing to keep cool
• Eat adequate lunch
• Don’t exercise if you are sick
• Take a break and let your coach know that you are still getting used to the heat in the first couple of weeks
We hope that by following the above guidelines you can have a successful try outs and we look forward to seeing many of you out on the fields, track and gym in the next few weeks.
