For Parents of Grade 5 Students
Middle School Beginner String Drive – Saturday, May 18th 2013
John SECOMB
johns@isb.ac.th
Middle School Beginning Strings is part of the music elective program offered during the school day for Grade 6 students and similar to that offered in the band program.
All students need to choose between Band, Strings and Choir and it is a year long commitment.
Each year we have a Middle School Beginner String Drive. This year this will be on Saturday, May 18th 2013 between 10.00am and 12.00noon.
Your child will have the opportunity to try out instruments from the Stringed family.
i.e. Violin, Viola Cello and Bass. This opportunity will be available in the String Room 123 in the new Cultural Center Building.
So we have some idea of numbers and can plan accordingly – Please fill in the Registration Form for Beginning String Drive: See link below
Location: String Room: 123 in the new Cultural Center Building
We will split up the two-hour session by the last name of the student:
Last name beginning with A-M – 10:00-11:00am
Last name beginning with N-Z – 11:00-12:00noon.
Conflicts may arise due to other obligations, so we will be flexible to accommodate your needs. If May 18 is not possible, please select the box under “Session Options” requesting an individual appointment. I will try to schedule everybody before end of May.
Students will be able to try Violin, Viola, Cello and Bass. This process takes about 10-15 minutes per child once they start trying out instruments. The session is not required; however, it will help make the school year start a lot smoother. Also note that if your child currently plays one of these instruments, please answer all questions so we can place your child in the appropriate class.
Bravo Music have very kindly offered to be at these sessions and will have a range of stringed instruments for parents and students to try.

Beginning Band Drive
Brent W. Poling Brentp@isb.ac.th
Kentaro Udagawa kentarou@isb.ac.th
If your grade 5 child will be choosing band as the music elective in grade 6, please read and fill out the on-line form. This MS sign up process usually happens earlier, however, with a new schedule in the works details have not been completed. Since the Beginning Band Drive is scheduled to occur soon after the Songkran holidays, we are sending this out to let you know about the day your child can try out a variety of instruments.
In getting a head start for the next school year, we are planning a “Beginner Drive” set for Saturday, May 18, 2013. It will begin at 9:00 am and will finish at 12:00 pm. At this time you will be able to meet the MS Band teachers at ISB and your child will have the opportunity to try out various instruments; from flute to tuba and French horn to percussion, all wind and percussion instruments will be available. We will be looking for which instrument best physically suits your child as well as finding the instrument that he/she can excel on the fastest. This is a very important process because some children may not be physically capable of playing certain instruments or may be limited to minimal success. For example, a child with a teardrop shaped upper lip will have a difficult time excelling on the flute. A child with an under-bite will have an extremely difficult time playing saxophone or clarinet.
We will split up the three-hour session by the last name of the student. It is as follows:
9:00-10:00 Last name beginning with A-J
10:00-11:00 Last name beginning with K-R 11:00-12:00 Last name beginning with S-Z
Knowing which instrument your child will be playing in advance will help the school year begin smoothly and successfully.

You can get your refund for your registration at the Community Activity Office (CAO) at ISB. PLEASE let me know if you are canceling your registration so we can allow others to participate.

4. If you were not previously registered but would now like to participate on Saturday, May 25th – you may register for the event.
