For Parents of All 5th Graders…

Posted on April 26, 2013 by Tina

Congratulations to you as your child completes grade 5 and prepares to begin the next phase of his/her educational journey.  We are looking forward to welcoming you and your child to middle school.  We believe that the middle school years are a wonderful time of excitement, exploration and change. We have two Middle School mottos: “Caring Counts at ISB Middle School” and “Together we are the best that we can be”.  Like the elementary school, we are a school where character and community are strongly emphasized.  It is our goal to assist your child through this transition from child to young adult as well as prepare them academically for the rigors of high school.

All grade 5 students will visit the middle school on Thursday, May 2nd. Current grade 6 students will be their guides for an event we call “Bridge Day”. Grade 5’s will visit various stations and accomplish tasks which introduce them to the teachers, facilities and format of middle school life.  They will talk with grade 6 “buddies” about the difference between elementary and middle school. This fun event helps ease worries about the move to middle school.  As part of this day, 5th grade students will also attend an information meeting where they will be presented an overview of the grade 6 program as well as instructions on how to submit their course requests for 6th grade.

On the evening of Thursday, May 2, there will also be an important parent information meeting where you, as parents of present 5th graders, will be presented an overview of the grade 6 program as well as instructions on how to submit your child’s course requests for grade 6. The 2013-2014 Middle School Program of Studies, containing program information and descriptions of the courses offered in grades 6-8, will be available soon online. The parent meeting is scheduled for Thursday, May 2 at 7:00 – 8:00pm in the Chevron Theatre.

We look forward to meeting you on May 2nd. We want you to know that you are a vital and valued part of our middle school community.  If there is one adjective that most accurately describes the early adolescent years, it is change.  It is our hope that we can work together over the course of the next three years to ensure that your children successfully ride the roller coaster of change.

If you have any questions about either of these events, please contact the counseling office at extension 4406.

Best Regards,

Tom Burgess, MS Principal
Moe Baron-Toaldo, MS Vice-Principal
Ellen Bagnato, MS Counselor
Kevin Davy, MS Counselor

Beginning Band Drive

Posted on April 26, 2013 by Tina

Brent W. Poling Brentp@isb.ac.th
Kentaro Udagawa kentarou@isb.ac.th

If your grade 5 child will be choosing band as the music elective in grade 6, please read and fill out the on-line form.   This MS sign up process usually happens earlier, however, with a new schedule in the works details have not been completed.  Since the Beginning Band Drive is scheduled to occur soon after the Songkran holidays, we are sending this out to let you know about the day your child can try out a variety of instruments.

In getting a head start for the next school year, we are planning a “Beginner Drive” set for Saturday, May 18, 2013.  It will begin at 9:00 am and will finish at 12:00 pm.  At this time you will be able to meet the MS Band teachers at ISB and your child will have the opportunity to try out various instruments; from flute to tuba and French horn to percussion, all wind and percussion instruments will be available.  We will be looking for which instrument best physically suits your child as well as finding the instrument that he/she can excel on the fastest.  This is a very important process because some children may not be physically capable of playing certain instruments or may be limited to minimal success.  For example, a child with a teardrop shaped upper lip will have a difficult time excelling on the flute.  A child with an under-bite will have an extremely difficult time playing saxophone or clarinet.

We will split up the three-hour session by the last name of the student.  It is as follows:
9:00-10:00       Last name beginning with A-J
10:00-11:00     Last name beginning with K-R
11:00-12:00     Last name beginning with S-Z

Knowing which instrument your child will be playing in advance will help the school year begin smoothly and successfully.

Thank you all so much for your time.  We anxiously wait the day that we get to meet you.  If you have any questions, please contact

The 14th Annual Colgate Kids Triathlon is just around the corner.   The race will take place on Monday, May 6th (Coronation Day substitute) at 7:30AM starting at two the ISB pools.  It’s shaping up to be an incredible event!  Again this year the triathletes will receive timing chips to wear around their ankles for accurate time and distance recording.  The Relay Race will again allow relay teams in each age division (based upon the oldest participant in the relay team), so athletes can form teams of three people to participate together.  One of the relay team members can be a teacher or other adult this year.

The distances this year will be:

5-6:         50m swim, 1 km bike, 450m run

7-8:          100m swim, 2.5 km bike, 800m run

9-10:          150m swim, 4.5 km bike, 1.2 km run

11-12:      200m swim, 4.5 km bike, 1.7 km run

13-14:     250m swim, 6.8 km bike, 2.4 km run

15+ :        350m swim, 9.1 km bike, 3.1 km run

Registration will close on Monday, April 29th or when total participants reaches 200, whichever comes first.  No late registrations will be permitted so make sure you register before the close date!  The fee per participant is THB 500 (THB 1,500 for relay teams).  All participants will receive a water bottle, towel and race bag.

All registrations must provide one volunteer to help on race day or pay a THB 1,000 (no volunteer fee)

Please note that all bike riders must have their own bicycle and must wear a helmet.

Families are welcome to use the ISB playgrounds after school hours, with supervision. However, during the school day from 7:00 am to 2:00 pm, the playgrounds are to be used only by students for scheduled recess. This includes the PK/Kinder playground. After 1:00 PK dismissal, the playground should only be used by Kindergarteners for their scheduled recess. Your cooperation is appreciated.

Cafeteria News…Did You Know…?

Posted on April 26, 2013 by Tina

Michelle Ihrig
cafeteria@isb.ac.th

That the ES Cafeteria kicked off an ‘Eating Well’ Campaign just a few months ago which consisted of the introduction of new plates with wellness messages printed on them, colorful posters in front of the ES Cafeteria, and wellness discussions in the classrooms.  What has been the outcome of this collaborative effort?  We have actually seen a rise in the consumption of the cooked and sauted vegetables!  Further, there is a raised awareness of the importance of ‘more color’ on your plate.  What effect has it had on the salad bar consumption?  Not much.  Which is terrific news, as about 85% of the ES students already use the Salad Bar on a daily basis anyway after they have enjoyed their hot selection first.  Overall the students are making good choices, and one can track, that the older they get, and the more they have learned, the better the choices become.  Enjoy.
