Some Books to consider
Philip Bradley
philpb@isb.ac.th

Several books have been mentioned in recent parent meetings or conversations; here they are:

How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk
Being able to maintain open constructive conversations with your children is possibly the most important parenting skill. It is certainly at the heart of resolving many of the stressful situations that many adolescents are increasingly feeling in a world where social networking and 24 hour connectivity are the norm.

Letting Go
This bestselling guide, read by hundreds of thousands of parents over the past decade, is now better than ever, newly revised and completely updated. Based on real-life experience and recommended by colleges and universities around the country, Letting Go offers compassionate, practical, and up-to-the-minute information to help parents with the emotional and social changes of the college years.

The Naked Roommate
From sharing a bathroom with 40 people to sharing lecture notes,The Naked Roommate is a behind-the-scenes look at everything students need to know about college. This essential guide is packed with expert advice, plus outrageous stories from students on over 100 campuses. Through his advice column, college tour, and website, Harlan Cohen has reached thousands of students with his message of being yourself and making the most of the college years.

Counseling Newsletter
Jeffrey Harper
jpharper@isb.ac.th

Grade 8 – Counselors will be stationed in the lunchroom on the 18th, 19th, and 20th during the Middle School lunch period to offer guidance and answer questions about their 2013-2014  grade 9 course registration. Consult the Program of Studies here: https://inside.isb.ac.th/parentportal/hs/program-of-studies/

Freshmen – The Counselors met with Freshmen for grade to date checks and grade 10 (2013-2014 school year) course panning with counselors last week.  Do you check with your son or daughter to see how classes are going?  Parents may want to visit the ISB on-line “Parent Portal” and access the 2013-2014 Program of Studies for information about grade 10 classes for your children ( https://inside.isb.ac.th/parentportal/hs/program-of-studies/ ).  It’s a good discussion point as long as you focus as much on the positive as on the “needs improvement” category! If your Freshmen missed their Counselor meeting, be sure to remind them to make an appointment.

Sophomores: Talk you’re your grade ten student about their course selections for grade eleven.  Choosing classes for grades 11 and 12 will be coming up soon (on-line registration opens on March 20th). Consult the High School Program of Studies about next year’s courses:  https://inside.isb.ac.th/parentportal/hs/program-of-studies/

Juniors:  Junior conferences are in full swing.  Have you made an appointment to see your son’s/daughter’s counselor yet?  Don’t delay!  Juniors should consult the new 2013-2014 Program of Studies about their course selections for their Senior year.  On-line course registration opens March 20:  Program of Studies is here:  https://inside.isb.ac.th/parentportal/hs/program-of-studies/

The popular University Labs begin Monday, March 18th with a session on applying to U.S. Universities.  As a part of your Junior year university research, you should be looking into the admission process to universities by country.  USA – 2:10 in room 3-203.  Future University Labs will include Australia on March 25th, the UK on April 1, Japan/Korea on April 22, Thailand on April 29.  Please mark your calendars.

Seniors:  If you are a U.S. citizen applying to schools in the U.S. you may be eligible for loans, grants, work study, or any combination of the three.  You need to file a FAFSA with the colleges in the U.S. that you have applied to.  Go to https://www.fafsa.ed.gov/  – it’s a free application and might be well worth your time.  Most schools start assigning financial aid in March so time is of the essence.  If you haven’t done your 2012 taxes yet, estimates based on 2011 are accepted.

Seniors applying to universities in Japan, Korea, Australia, South Africa etc. with late deadlines, PLEASE be aware of those deadlines.  They can vary from university to university!! See your counselor if you have any questions.

Watch out for the dreaded SENIOR SLUMP.

As you receive your offers for universities, remember that when you make a deposit for a university, you are committing to that university for a year.  You may not deposit at more than one university.  You have to make up your mind!  Remember that, because universities that learn that their accepted students have “double-deposited” will sometimes remove their offer.

The Senior Transition Program dates have been announced: May 23 and June 6.  Mark your calendars.

Dr. Cathy Curtis will be in The Netherlands this week visiting and learning about Dutch university options for ISB students.

Upcoming University Visits (Consult Naviance for additions or changes)

University visits are a great opportunity to ask specific questions about the university admissions process of the very people who make admissions decisions for their respective universities.

Sagovia University (Spain) March 19 10:15 AM

HS Graduation Announcements

Kevin Sypolt
ksypolt@gmail.com

Hard to believe, but our High School seniors will graduate in less than 3 months. Graduation is on Friday, June 7th, so mark your calendars.  In preparation, the Graduation Committee will be taking orders for formal graduation announcements and invitations.  These can be sent to your friends and relatives.  Orders for the announcements will be taken each Thursday and Friday in the HS cafeteria from 10:00AM – 12:00PM, starting March 7th.   No orders will be accepted after April 1st.  The printer should have the graduation announcements back to parents by early May so there will be time to mail them to overseas guests.  Don’t wait.  Order yours right away so you are not disappointed.  You can also go to this google document for the order form – https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1lOqpd13o2oFXpgV1gCOy81pxJDm1n1kb5fpajcvN610/viewform

See the below files for an example of what the graduation announcements look like.

Future World Cup Players of ISB,

Justin Wah
justinw@isb.ac.th

The ISB 2013 World Cup will be starting on April 29th.   It’s a long way off but we are trying to get prepared early.  Currently we have 11 teams signed up, with 3 having paid for shirts!!  Well done team Germany, Japan, and Team Andy Real!

Please go to https://tinyurl.com/isbworldcup to register your team.  Your team captain should register/enter the team names on to the Google Doc.  Team captain please ensure you put your email address.  Once you have entered your team, come in and pay (200baht per player, pay at CAO).  Once your fees are paid your country is secure.
There will be some small changes from the World Cups past, so please take these into account when creating your team.

  • This year ALL teams will be required to have a minimum of one Female player on the field at ALL times.
  • We will also be playing the games across the fields, rather than lengthwise.
  • Due to the number of shirts there will be a Minimum of 9 players and a Maximum of 14 players per team (All games are 7 a side).
  • Games will be 15 minute halves with a 5 minute half time.  Kick off times will be 2:25, 3:00, 335, 4:15
  • Players may choose to play on two teams, however, this is discouraged.  If you choose to play on two teams, players must designate which is their first choice team.  If both teams are drawn against each other, the player playing for both teams, will play for their designated first choice team.
  • It will be a first come first serve basis for Country Team Assignments.  In order to secure the Country of your choice it will be necessary to complete an on-line team roster, and then make payment for shirts.  Go to https://tinyurl.com/isbworldcup to complete your team roster.   Each shirt will cost 200 Baht, after on-line roster is complete bring your payment to Mr. Wah at the CAO on any Monday or Thursday.
  • You may add players to your roster at a later date (remember max 14 players).
  • All Schedules will be posted at the PE offices
