8th Annual ISB Earth Week

Dear Parents

Earth Week is fast approaching and parents have always been a wonderful resource for bringing in new organizations and ideas.  I was wondering if you or someone you know would like to participate in this event.  Off course they would have to be doing something eco friendly to be accepted.

This year Earth Week is April 22-26 and the main theme is ANIMALS.  We can/will have other environmental groups there too, but animals will be the main focus.  I’m working out the greater plan now, but I can let you know possible ideas and changes from the past.

Possible animal presentations:
  1. The real deal with shark fin soup.
  2. I love elephants and I don’t want to cause them harm.  What should I support?
  3. Taking a cute photo with a gibbon or a slow loris can’t really be that bad.  CAN IT?
  4. Why is it better to adopt a dog or cat instead of just picking one up in Chatuchuk?
  5. Join the Animal Rescue Team
  6. What meals are high in animal cruelty? (factory farm animals, foie gras, shark fin soup, veal, etc)

Typical situation of the past:

  • The first few years we had a massive 1 day fair, the first fair had 40 organizations.  This was a big fun event, but a little over whelming to take in all the information and to organize.  Since then we have had more events throughout the week and more organizations setting up as well.
  • Through out the week NGO’s set up a booth (1-2 tables, bulletin board, etc) in the cafeteria for 1-5 days (up to them).
  • Students go there during lunch and if your booth interest them they will come over.  However, often not enough of them came over.
  • You could sell things at your booth, have students sign petitions, raise awareness, etc.  Last year SCAD even had dogs there and people adopted them.
Possible improvements for this year:
  • I would like to see if some teachers would want organizations/presenters to go to their classes to give a presentation about the cause.  We could see what the interest is and plan accordingly based on size, etc.
  • Another possible idea is to have a different groups give a presentation in the cafeteria ‘pit’ each day.  I would have speakers, mic, screen, projector, etc set up for you.  You would do this during lunch when everyone is there.

If interested please register your organization here

If you know of others who might be interested please send this email to them.

Thank you,

Kerry Dyke
