Dear Parents,
Friday’s tragic events at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut have shocked us all and our thoughts and prayers are with the parents and family members of those that perished.
Shocking and tragic events such as this may impact our children and we have provided some advice below about how parents might approach this event with their children.
We understand that parents know their children best. With some children, talking about the events may be helpful, and with others it may cause unnecessary distress. Certainly, if children initiate a conversation or show signs of anxiety, listening and talking will probably be beneficial.
The first is a link from the National Association of School Psychologists entitled “Talking to Children About Violence: Tips for Parents and Teachers“.
The second link comes from parenting expert Dr. Michele Borba and is titled “How to Talk to Kids About the Newtown School Shooting”.
ISB teachers, counselors,
Once again, we extend our deepest sympathies to the relatives and friends of those that died in this most awful of tragedies.
