HPV Vaccine

by Belinda Gardner
belindag@isb.ac.th

On Monday the High School was given a very special opportunity to hear Professor Harald zur Hausen, a 2008 Nobel Laureate for Medicine, speak and answer questions.  He shared his inspirational journey of identifying the link between the HPV (human papillomavirus, a sexually transmitted disease) and cancer.  Subsequently a vaccine has been developed and is now available to protect people against certain strands of HPV.

Since Professor zur Hausen’s presentation there have been many discussions concerning the vaccine and, hence, I am sharing some recent recommendations from the US, please see the attachment.   The vaccine produces the best antibody response between the ages 9 and 15 and generally involves a series of 3 shots administered at intervals of 0, 2 and 6 months.

There are two vaccines available, Gardasil and Cervarix, which offer slightly different protection. I encourage you to read the information in the attachment and do your own research to decide if this is something you want your child to have.

The vaccines are available in Thailand.

by  Kevin Sypolt
ksypolt@gmail.com

On Saturday Dec 1st and continuing all week through Saturday Dec 8th, BBSA is pleased to host our annual Pro Player clinics.  We have 4 players former and current minor league players who will be running free clinics for all of our players.  There is no need to register for the clinics.  Just show up at scheduled ISB field at the appropriate time for your student.  This is a great opportunity to pick up some great baseball/softball tips from guys who have spent years around the game.  Just bring your fielding glove and you can join in.  The schedule is posted on our BBSA website – https://inside.isb.ac.th/cao/bbsa/pro-clinic-information/

The UPI team will consist of Mickey Weston & his 17th year old son, Bill Curtis, Steve Souza and Zak Wilkerson.  Should be a great team for the BBSA.

Here are some links so you can read about the players who will be leading our clinics:

Mickey Weston – https://upi.org/html/Staff/Weston.html

Bill Curtis – https://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=curtis001wil

Steve Souza – https://www.milb.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?sid=milb&t=p_pbp&pid=519306

Zak Wilkerson – https://www.msuspartans.com/sports/m-basebl/mtt/wilkerson_zak00.html

UPI is a Christian missionary group.  So at the conclusion of each clinic the Pro Clinic players will have a short message to the BBSA kids about Christianity.  Kids are under no obligation to stay for this part of the clinic.  If you would like to know more about the UPI organization, click https://upi.org/to see their website.
