Seussical the Musical “An unusual story will soon be unfurled…”

by Kerri Fitzgerald
kerrif@isb.ac.th

Next week 76 HS Drama, Music, Dance, Lights, Sound and Stage Crew students will bring the much loved characters of Dr. Seuss to ISB. Don’t miss the antics of the Cat-in-the-Hat, Horton the Elephant,  Gertrude McFuzz, Mayzie La Bird, the Whos of Whoville, the Grinch and many others as they burst into life on a transformed and colourful Chevron stage. The performances are:

Thursday November 22nd at 3 pm

(Tickets are 100 baht for students, 200 baht for adults)

Friday November 23rd at 3 pm

(Tickets are 100 baht for students, 200 baht for adults)

Saturday November 24th Red Carpet Gala Evening at 5:30 and final performance 6:30pm.
(Tickets for this performance are 150 baht for students and 300 baht for adults.)

You are asked to dress in the most colourful outfit you can concoct and at the special ‘Red Carpet Gala’, children are encouraged to dress up as their favorite Dr Seuss character.  “What is the Red Carpet Gala?” you might well be asking. Situated in the foyer, this enables youngsters to mix it with the characters in the show and to interact with the imagined world before the actual performance. Our wonderful BOOSTER Club sponsor this rewarding experience: there will be canapés and soft drinks, and the actors will be signing autographs (small autograph books are included for the ES students!). In addition, there is a surprise for the youngest members of the audience as they leave the theatre after the final performance.

Tickets for Peter Pan sold out quickly, so don’t delay in buying your assigned seats.
Tickets will go on sale on November 19th at the following times and locations:

November 19th/20th/21st

06:45 – 07:45 ES walkway

10:00 – 12:05 HS/MS Cafeteria

13:50 – 14:45 ES walkway

Show Days: November 22nd/23rd

06:45 – 07:45 ES walkway

10:00 – 12:05 HS/MS Cafeteria

13:50 – 14:45 In front of Chevron Theatre

Saturday November 24th (RED CARPET GALA)

17:00 – 18:20 In front of Chevron Theatre

Don’t be “Alone in the Universe” – come and share in the fun and adventure of Seussical the Musical. We look forward to seeing you.

Seussical and Theatre Etiquette

by Kerri Fitzgerald
kerrif@isb.ac.th

Theatres have a very defined etiquette and I would like the ISB community to be reminded of these established norms of behaviour. Many of the rules about overcrowding come from the aspect of safety: eg the audience can never sit in the aisles or stand around the sides and back in a theatre. This is considered a fire hazard.

Seussical is nearly upon us and this joyous show has much to offer all ages. Performances will be:

Thursday and Friday Nov 22nd and 23rd at 3 pm

Saturday, November 24th will see our Red Carpet event which will take place at 5:30 pm where you will have the chance to meet the Seussical characters with the final performance starting at 6:30 pm.

Tickets are on sale from Monday 19th November in the ES from 6:45 am – 7:45 am and in the MS/ HS cafeteria lunch times 10 am – 11:25 am. Ticket prices for the Thursday and Friday shows are as follows: Adults 200 THB and students 100 THB. Tickets for Saturday will be 300 THB for adults and 150 THB for students.

As we are expecting a full house for all three performances, seating in the Chevron theatre has been allocated. We strongly recommend that you arrive at least 15 minutes before show time to ensure you can be seated on time. Late comers (ie those arriving 3 minutes before the scheduled start time and beyond) will not be admitted until interval which is at least one hour into the performance. The doors will be closed 3 minutes before start time and we intend to start on time.

Young children are encouraged to attend (please leave those under the age of two with a carer), and there are bathrooms to be used at interval. It is very distracting to both performers and audience members when there are people wandering around the theatre.

Taking a film of this show (eg on an iphone) is forbidden due to copyright law and no cell phones are to be bought into the theatre with the exception of the house manager and director. Even though we have very high quality radio mics, the frequency can be disturbed by cell phones. There have been numerous instances of radio mic interference in the past which is devastating to the performers concerned. Just leave your phone at home or in a back pack in the foyer which will have security!

There will be publicity photos to download afterwards and so there is no need for photos to be taken during the show. Please save us the embarrassment of having to take cameras and iphones off audience members.

Lastly a reminder that no food is allowed in the theatre – only water.

Jo Hanson and the performers thank you in advance for supporting their efforts. If everyone abides by these norms we can all enjoy the show.

A Culinary Journey Across 60 Countries

PTA and Booster Club are collaborating to produce an ISB cookbook, envisioned to comprise recipes from the entire ISB community, as well as tips on healthy eating, where to find those hard-to-get ingredients in Bangkok, and much more.

The sponsored cookbook — aptly called Aroi Dee ISB will feature around 250-300 favorite family recipes from all over the world, reflecting the multi-cultural community of ISB.  We hope to have recipes from all the countries currently represented at ISB.

Part of the proceeds from the sale of the cookbook will be channeled towards ISB’s Tsunami relief ‘After The Wave’ efforts in addition to supporting the ISB PTA and Booster Club.

Send us three of your family’s favorite recipes and we will ensure that at least one gets published in the cookbook.   Deadline for recipe submission is January 30, 2013.

School Toys Libraries Project

by Sharka Furda
sharka.furda@gmail.com

Dear ES Parents,

As some of you may remember from last year,  ISB was  part of a lovely project – collecting toys in good condition for The School Toy Libraries (STL) project.
This is a well established project under the patronage of the Khun Meechai Viravaidya Foundation. This organization has established over 100 STL throughout Northern Thailand, with toys bring donated by urban children. The guiding principle of the STL is that access to toys is a human right for children.

Children in rural areas are not just given toys, they can earn a right to borrow a toy or a book for a period of time (usually one week) in exchange of some community services. The libraries are self-sustainable and in the majority of cases run by children ages 8-14 years. This teaches children responsibility, a sense of community and a sense of appreciation.

We are hoping to collect enough toys to start at least one more toy library in Northern Thailand. We thought this is a great opportunity for our children to open their hearts and share with the less fortunate.

Our wonderful new librarian, Mr. Nat, with help of the MS School Toy Librarians Club, coordinated by Ms. Kari, volunteered to educate all ES grades, so they will understand why they should give some of their toys. We all know that giving may feel better than receiving.

The educational piece of our mission will take part very soon – November 26th & December 7th – during regular library hours.  The collection of toys will take place at the ES library and MS/HS Cafeteria (thanks to help from the Green Panther Club and ES CLA Club) from December 4th – 18th.

Please ask you children about this project and help them choose toys to donate. All toys and books in good condition are very welcome, but The Foundation is especially grateful for educational toys, games, puzzles (without missing pieces), Legos, sports equipment, train toys etc.

For more information on Green Toy Libraries, please see this short video:

THANK YOU VERY MUCH IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
