MS Film-Makers Win Top Awards in UN-IAP Video Production Competition

Three ISB Middle School teams won the top three prizes in a recent video production competition sponsored by the United Nations Inter-Agency Project on Human Trafficking (UNIAP).  UNIAP invited students from the eleven international schools in Bangkok to enter a competition to produce original audio-visual presentations that demonstrate the relationship between human trafficking, slavery and private sector supply chains.  To learn more about the competition and see the winning videos produced by current grade 8 students (who produced the videos in their grade 7 Humanities classes last year), go to the following United Nations link: https://www.no-trafficking.org/story_rmo_studentmovies.html

Repeat from last week:  For All MS Parents – Information on Operation Smile

Dear MS Parents,

If you are unfamiliar with Operation Smile, please note their mission statement:

Throughout the world, Operation Smile volunteers repair childhood facial deformities while building public and private partnerships that advocate for sustainable healthcare systems for children and families. Together, we create smiles, change lives, and heal humanity.

https://thailand.operationsmile.org/

Last year, students at International School Bangkok raised over 600,000 baht for Operation Smile through games, raffles, and the selling of Operation Smile merchandise.  During November of 2010 and February 2010, middle school students and high school students also took part in medical missions where they were able to experience first-hand the amazing work Operation Smile does to a change children’s lives.  We have similar trips planned again this year as well.

Each November, ISB middle and high schools jointly sponsor Operation Smile Week, our biggest event of the year.  Our goal is to raise awareness about Operation Smile’s work and funds to further those efforts.  The most popular event of Operation Smile Week is our culminating raffle.  Last year, prizes included accommodation vouchers for AANA Resort in Koh Chang, Zeavola Resort on Koh Phi Phi, Hotel de la Paix in Siem Reap, the Amari Atrium Hotel in Bangkok and the Dusit Thani in Bangkok.  In addition, we received dining vouchers from River Side Luxury Cruise Ship,Roadhouse Barbecue, the Conrad Hotel, Molly Malone’s and Great American Rib as well as phones from Blackberry and computer products from Acer.  In exchange for these gracious donations, we are able to advertise these businesses to the ISB community of over 2000 students and families.

If anyone in the community is interested in helping us with this event through raffle prize donations (for either students or adults), please contact a Grade 6 teacher (or James Denby,jamesd@isb.ac.th).  Your support makes this fundraiser possible.  Thank you in advance for your help.

Sincerely,

The Grade 6 Faculty

Cafeteria News…Did You Know…?
We are proud to announce that our Fresh Seasonal Fruit Smoothies are one of the most popular, nutritious beverages at the Grind.  Because there is such enthusiasm around them, many of you have come to me with wonderful suggestions of adding additional fantastic fruits such as whole raspberries, blueberries, and strawberries.  The berry suggestions could be endless!  So why have we not added them?  For 5 thoughtful reasons:  1.  Fresh fruits carry more nutrients, as they have ripened on the trees for longer as they have less to travel.  2.  Buying local fruits supports the local economy in which we live.  3.  We drastically reduce our carbon footprint on the globe as we are not using the vast amount of transportation and precious resources it takes to move them that far.  Not to mention the added risk of contamination as the produce is moved from place to place.  4.  Enjoying local fruits also keeps us more in check with the seasons, which naturally point us in the direction of the foods we should be enjoying at certain times of the year. 5.  We are living in a country blessed with an array of fresh, tropical, extremely nutritious fruits.  We should tap in to this bounty as it is available to us at our front door step.
Look for the feature smoothies of the month as we strive to stay creative with what is available to us in tune with the existing seasons.  Enjoy.
