Chain Letters Issue

Dear Parents,

An issue came to our attention earlier this week about chain letters being forwarded by students via email.  We’ve heard from some upset students and parents regarding these types of letters causing fear and anxiety.  I have spoken to a number of students directly involved about the issue.  As far as we know, the incident has been isolated to 6th graders but we are informing all MS parents incase it spreads to the other grades.

This morning through their Humanities classes, all 6th graders heard from their teachers that:

  • chain letters, spam etc are a misuse of student email accounts and the ISB network
  • if students do receive these kinds of messages, they can DELETE or REPORT
  • If not sure what to do, students can report to a parent, teacher, or directly to the office for advice
  • forwarding such emails is as bad as creating such a message

Teachers also tried to convey that there is a difference between a chain letter with some threat and something that is directly threatening.  There would obviously be a big difference in the school’s response between a chain letter threat and a direct threat to an individual student.
