‘Nudging not Pushing’
Such was the advice offered to parents by our visiting ‘writing guru’, Matt Glover, when supporting writing development in our children at home. It was much the same message for teachers and IAs as Matt worked with each grade level, conducting lab-sites and reflection sessions designed to allow deep thinking and transfer of understanding about the best ways to move children forward in their writing. Using sound assessment practices to make judgments about when to ‘nudge’ the learner to the next stage of becoming a proficient writer is at the heart of good teaching – both for parents and for teachers, at home and at school. Matt’s visit at the beginning of the school year has set the stage for our school-wide focus on assessment and writing in the ES. Matt was able to work with all teachers and Instructional Assistants, PK-5 this week. He was our guest at the parent workshop on Thursday morning. Stay tuned for upcoming parent workshops in Writing, Math and eLearning throughout the year.
