Using YouTube Live Streaming in the Virtual Classroom

YouTube Live Streaming (Via webcam)

Overview

All students and staff have a YouTube account and live streaming is a great way to present material in a lecture type format.  There is a chat room, but you likely won’t find it helpful for communication as you are busy presenting.

Practical Uses

  • Record a lecture and students can watch it live
  • The stream is saved as a regular YouTube video, so it is easy for you to share it with people again in the future. Or, they can watch it if they missed it.
  • Send an inspirational note of the day to talk about what you want students to do. They can watch it live or the archived recorded version. Both are ok.

Getting Started

  • Go to YouTube.com and click the plus button
  • Select “Go Live” and use the webcam option.  There is a “stream” option, but that is for multiple cameras and other more high end stuff

Hat top to Liz Merrit for discovering that you cant’ Live Stream right away.  YouTube requires a 24 hour waiting period.  So, attempt to live stream, then 24 hours later, it will let you.
