Gearing Up for Mocks

Exams are around the corner and Mocks are super close. Student stress levels will be peaking.  I suggested these tools a few weeks ago, but thought it might be good to bring them back up now.  These tools can help students get organized, and focused for mocks. If you need or want more information please let me know.

1. ToDoist = Organize Assignments, Projects, and Life – Single app that integrates with Google so that your calendar can feed into what you do daily.  Side Note – if you use Google Home, you can ask it ‘What’s my Day Look Like’ and it will run down all the things you have scheduled.

2. ColdTurkey = Get focused by setting up your own browser blocker. This is simple, we get more done when we are not distracted. Cold Turkey goes on all your browsers and allows you to simply click the extension and add a website to block for a selected amount of time. Sometimes it isn’t the usual suspects (youtube, or facebook) but something else.  Now you can block them all for 20 minutes and get your work done then take a much-needed break.

3. Google Keep = Organize your notes, passwords, and anything else.  It is a great place to put all your notes and syncs automatically to your google account.  Keep your notes organized and add it to your browser for easy access.  Then add it to your device for easy access to all your notes. I’ve been using this for years now and love it!

Remember that taking a break is critical to letting the brain absorb knowledge. Additionally, reading relieves stress and can help ‘reset’ our brains so they function better. We have all our new books ready for checkout.  Our wonderful staff in the library has put together a slide show of 50 NEW FICTION BOOKS with images and brief summaries.   Take a look below and then stop by and pick one up!

Bell’s Book Recommendation

The Midnight Library – by Matt Haig

It’s been a while since I have read a book that I literally could not put down.  This is it. It is a book about the regrets we have in our lives. Most people have those moments where they make a decision, big or small, and then they second guess that decision.  Worse yet, they may think they made the wrong decision. Well, what if all those decisions created parallel universes where that decision carried forward. Our lead character, who is quite a mess when we meet her definitely has some regrets and learns a bit about regret. This book is a wild one and a true page-turner.  Some lucky seniors will be reading this one in English class.  I will be excited to hear what they think.

Melinda’s Book Recommendation

Sadie – by Courtney Summers

Watt Key is one of my favorite middle-grade writers of Adventure/Survival Fiction with many notable titles in this genre and he has done it again with his latest book.  Set in Alabama, 13-year-old Cort has grown up on a houseboat on a river with his father, who is a local expert on hunting and swamp life.  When a large hurricane sweeps through the area, Cort is put to the test as he finds himself and two neighbor girls in the midst of the hurricane in the middle of the swamp.  A book about courage and what it means to push yourself to the limit.  I also thoroughly enjoyed learning more about the unique eco-system of this part of the world and the impact of a hurricane on the animals as they fight for survival, and a patch of the land or a tree canopy to ride out the storm.
